IMPROVEMENT IN TYPE-WRITERS.

i Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 182,289, dated September 19,1876; application filed May 27, 1876.

To all whom it may conce-ru:

Be it known that I, SAMUEL T. RYDER, of Plymouth, county of Plymouth and Stateof Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful improvement in that class of'instruments 'known as type-Writers, and which is especially applicable to the so-called Sholes & Glidden Type-Writer,77 which improvement is fullyset forth in the following specilication, reference being had to the accompanying drawin Tn the use ot' the' Sholes 8v Glidden type writer a serious inconvenience is realized in adjusting the paper to be printed to the cylindrical tympan with sufficient accuracy to enable a letter t0 be struck on a point precisely where it may be needed, or aline to be print;

` To obviate these inconveniences I have'invented a device which I denominate an improved l'ine-register and letter-locater, and which will indicate with milch greater ease andaccuraey a point 'for a letter and a direction for a line-t0 `be printed than any device nonT in use. This may be more fully shown by reference to the accompanying drawing. l

Figure l-A is ,the top plate ot' a Sholes 85 Glidden type-writer. B is the cylindrical tympan, supported by the frame G C, and is movable vertically on the hinges a a, and laterally on the rod b b. The improved lineregister and letter-locater consists of the indexes D N .on the plateis to imprint its mark N on the tympan. The frame E Eturns upon the hinges g y, and lies upon theplate A, as indicated by the dotted line e e, While operating` the machine for the purpose ot' type-writing- It is evident that the frame E E maybe detached, and the ends now hinged be inserted into Aholes at g g in Plate A, or at'other places, by which the indexes may be adjusted to the tympan in the same place, and serve the identical purpose.

I claim'as my inventionl. The indexes D N D, supported upon the frame E E, in combination, by hingesg 9,With the plate A, as described.

2. The indexes D N D, hinged to the topplate of a type-writing machine, and arranged to indicate the printing-point and direction ot' printed'line, in combination with thenhinged tympan B, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
