Description

Sept. 8, 1931. H L. GRE VE 1,822,576
' ,I AILING CARTON FOR BOOKS Filed Feb. 4; 1930 INVENTOR Patented Sept. 8, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT OF I HERMAN L. GREVE, OF HOLLIS, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO INTERNATIONAL MAILING TUBE & WRAPPER COMPANY, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK MAILING CARTON FOR BOOKS Application filed February 4, 1930. Serial No. 425,737.
My invention relates to mailing cartons.
The object of my invention is to provide a mailing carton for books that may be made at a low cost, permit of quick inspection of its contents by postal authorities, and which is held in closed condition by a metal locking device in place of cord or binding tape, as now generally used.
Referring to the drawings which form a part of this specification:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a carton shown partly in section, and in a partly open condition.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a carton in its closed and locked condition, and shown partly in section to disclose a book therein.
10 indicates the outer casing of a carton made of stifl thick card-board or other suitable material and formed with open ends -11 in the usual manner.
12- indicates the wrapper portion of the casing which includes the ends 13.
The inner portion 12 may be removed from the casing thru either end thereof, and a book 14 slipped in from either open side thereof in the usual manner, after which the inner portion is inserted in the casing as illustrated in Figure 2.
My improvement in this type of carton consists in forming an opening 15 shaped substantially circular with a notch or recess 16 at one side as illustrated, and using a clip to lock the parts together, instead of tape or cord.
lhe locking means comprise a clip 17 made of tough soft metal, such as sheet iron or brass, and having a shank portion 18 with prongs of the usual construction formed integral and extending thru the card-board 12- and clinched in the under side thereof to hold the clip firmly in position thereon.
The opening 15- is made of sufliciently greater diameter than the diameter of the head portion 19 to permit said head portion to be reached and lifted by a finger in the locking operation, the clip being bent I over into the position shown to lock the parts together, with the neck portion resting in the recess 20 to prevent shifting of the wrapper portion endwise in the casing.
In forming the clip the head portion -19 is pressed into a partly spherical shape to stifien it, and the neck portion 20 is reduced in width to permit the clip to be easily bent at this point, in the act of locking the carton.
By locating the clip midway between the ends of the casing, and near one side thereof as illustrated, the middle portion is left clear for the usual address label 21.
By making the width of the recess to correspond with the width of the neck portion -20- all end movement of the part 12 is prevented.
Constructed as above described, the carton may be quickly filled and locked, ready for shipment, and may be inspected without unnecessary loss of time.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new:
1. In a mailing carton of the character described, a casing of rectangular form open at each end, a wrapper portion including a side and lunged ends cooperating with the casing to provide end closures for said casing,
and an interlocking connection between the casing and wrapper located substantially midway the ends of the wrapper side adjacent a side edge thereof to permit removal of the wrapper from either end of the casing and a presenting uninterrupted address areas on both sides of the Casino.
3 2. In a lllalllll" carton of the character dee n b scribed, a casing of rectangular form open at each end, a wrapper portion including a 1 side and hinged ends cooperating with the casing to provide end closures for said casing, and an interlocking connection between the casing and wrapper located substantially midway the ends of the wrapper side adjacent a side edge thereof to permit removal of the wrapper from either end of the casing and presenting uninterrupted address areas on both sides of the casing, the interlocking connection between the casing and Wrapper including the provision of an opening in the casing and a metallic clip carried by the Wrapper adapted to be projected through the opening and bent to overlie a portion of the casing.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature.
HERMAN L. GREVE.
