HIXON LIGHTING FiXTURE Filed Aug. 2, 1929 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Iaweaaior: flared JIIaubcon lllfllllfllll 1!!!!flffllll'llllllffllfllflf/IIIIIIIII I'll! llllllllllllllll i A I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I 0 m I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I n I Patented Sept. 8,- 1931 UNITED STATES ALFRED J'. HIXON, OF BRAINTREE, MASSACHUSETTS LIGHTING FIXTURE Application filed August 2, 1929. Serial No. 382,993.
This invention relates to lighting fixtures and aims to provide an improved fixture having, among others, the novel features and advantages hereinafter described for general use, and adapted particularly for use in sick rooms and hospitals.
In the drawings of the embodiment of my invention selected for illustration and description,
1 Fig. 1 is a front elevation, partly broken out for convenience;
Fig. 2, a side elevation; Fig. 8, a vertical section onthe line 3-3, Fig. 1, from the right; and Fig. 4:, a horizontal section on the line 4-4, Fig. 3, looking down.
Referring to Figs. 1, 2,13, my novel fixture comprises a front plate A adapted to furnish a flush cover for the casing and pocket in the room wall in which the casing and fixture body are concealed.
This plate may be of any desired material and secured as by screws 2 to the wall and by screws 3 to the casing 4:, thus effectually preventing tampering with the inside of the casing.
One object of the invention is to provide a fixture that is capable of use as a bracket fixture, and also a portable fixture. To that end, Figs. 1, 3, the front plate A is provided with a long narrow opening 5, in which is mounted a cylindrical base or hub member 6, vertically and pivotally adjustable, with an aperture 7 in its face, in which is removably inserted a rod 8 of convenient length, carrying an electric lamp socket 9 on its outer end, the usual cord 10 running through the rod.
In order that the interior of the casing and fixture may be hidden at all times from view, and inaccessible to the curious and mischievous, the opening 5, Figs. 1, 3, 1s closed by a flexible movable panel member 12 of metal or other suitable material, which carrice the cylindrical base 6 vertically pivotally mounted therein, as by pins 66 in. the strips 67, 68, which slide between the rails 13, 14, also Fig. 4, as stated. This panel member 12 is slidable, Fig. 3, between two rails 18, 14,-, which are secured together by horizontal plates 15, 16, forming a frame, and to the plate A by screws 166, the panel being long enough to close the opening 5, whether thebracket member 6 is near the upper or lower end of the opening.
-On the upper plate 16 is mounted an idle pulley 17 over whichruns the electric cord 10 to'a spring actuated winding pulley 18 mounted on an" insulating plate 19 as by arms 20 which pulley serves to wind up and unwind the cord 10 as required by the position of the member 6 and the bracket member 8. The cord 10 is securedto thepulley 18, and the pulley is connected to a plate 21 on the plate 19 in the supply circuit 22. The foregoing construction provides a lamp and fixture which is especially adapted for use in the sick chamber and hospitals and any other place where the combination of a movable and fixed bracket is desired. Located in the wall of the room at; a height above 1 that of the ordinary wall bracket, it permits vertical adjustment to suit special cases, as the needs'of a patient in a chairor in bed.
It provides a detachable bracket rod and lamp that can, be removed readily for use at any reasonable distance, as arounda table or the bed for the use of physicians, nurses or attendants or for patients sitting in chairs.
It is well known to those accustomed to attendance upon invalids, especially invalids sufi'ering from nervous disorders,'that they are generally accustomed to tamper with anything movable within their reach, and that such tampering usually results in time, in .disarranging or injuring to a substantial degree such articles. Obviously tampering with electrical fixtures offers possible opportunities for unpleasant results that should, not be permitted if it is possible to prevent it.
The means for promoting the sanitary condition of the sick room offered by the concealed fixture also is a consideration which is of substantial value. It presents but little opportunity for the accumulation of dust and germs and being out of reach of the patient presents no opportunity forthe dangerous infection of one patient by handling an article infected from previous handling by another patient.
My invention is not restricted to the precise embodiment thereof described and illustrated.
Claims:
1. A lamp fixture unit comprising a frame constructed to be concealed in and to close a wall pocket, a cover plate with a slot therein for the frame and pocket including a sliding panel covering the slot at all. times with a lamp carrying bracket vertically and angularly adjustable thereon, and extensibly secured thereto.
2. A lamp fixture unit comprising a frame constructed to be concealed in and to close a Wall pocket, a cover plate with a slot therein for the frame and pocket including a flexible panel covering the slot at all times slidable in the frame, with a lamp carrying bracket adjustable on the sliding panel, and an automatic winding reel in the frame with a flexible current cord secured thereon and to said frame.
3. A lamp fixture unit comprising a plurality of curved track members and frame to be located in and to close a wall pocket, an apertured cover plate for the frame and pocket, a flexible panel slidable vertically in the frame and closing the aperture at all times, and carrying a lamp bracket pivoted about a vertical axis and extensibly secured to the frame.
4. A lamp fixture unit comprising a curved track and a frame with a take-up reel to be inserted in and to close a wall pocket, an apertured cover plate for the frame and pocket, a flexible panel slidable in the track and closing the aperture at all times, a cylindrical block with an extensible lamp bracket pivoted thereon, and a current supply cord in the bracket and connected to the take up reel.
5. A lamp fixture unit comprising a frame constructed to be seated in and to close a Wall pocket and having a flexible panel slidable vertically therein, a lamp bracket supporting block pivoted in the panel for rotary horizontal motion, a passage through the block, a lamp bracket removably seated therein, and a flexible current cord attached to the bracket and slidable through the block and connected to a source of current.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
ALFRED J. HIXON.
