Description

Sept. 8, 193 1. RUAU 1,822,316
C IGARETTE MAKING MACHINE Filed July 1. 1929 5 INVENTOI? aw'a/zw to repair the damage. i
Patented Sept 8 1931 UNITED STATES FELIX FREDERIC RUAU, 0F DIElIP'IIIiORD, LONDON, ENGLAND CIGARETTE MAKING MACHINE Application filed July 1, 1929, Serial No. 375,232, and in Great Britain July 9, 1928.
arette paper, strips of cork or like material 10 which are equal in width to the web of cigarette paper, and in length to twice the length of thetip of a cigarette so that when the web of cigarette paper and the'tobacco V are formed into a continuous rod, cork bands are formed around the rod at intervals spaced apart by a distance equal to twice the length of a cigarette. The rod thus formed is severed at the mid-length of each of the said bands thereby producing cork tipped cigarettes wherein the mouth-piece of each cigarette is disposed adjacent to that of its neighbour.
In machines of the above character the .cork tips are secured to the paper by gum which is applied to the web of cigarette paper by feeding the same between a gum ming roller and a pressure roller. As it 00-' casionally happens that a cigarette making ..,machine is stopped when that portion of to the web of cigarette paperis' in contact with the paper, it is found that on re-startcome secured to the gum applying portion of the roller and consequently the web breaks and the machine has The present invention consists of an apparatus for applying cork or like tips to a travelling web of cigarette paper which comprises a pressure roller arranged to press a web of cigarette paper into engagement the gumming roller which applies the gum to be stopped with a gumming roller, and means operatively connected to the pressure roller operable to move the said roller out of proximity to the gumming roller when the cigarette making machine is stopped.
The invention will be more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawing which shows a tipping apparatus of the kind described in specificationNo. 251,322 with the invention applied thereto.
Referring to the drawing, the tipping apparatus comprises an engraved gum apply ing roller 1 which is supplied with gum by a furnishing roller 2 arranged to rotate in a gum bath 3.
A reciprocating doctor 4 is arranged so as to scrape the surplus gum from the plain portion of the gumming roller.
A pressure roller 5 is mounted so as to press the web of cigarette paper into contact with the surface of the gumming roller when the engraved portion of the said roller is in proximity to the paper. The pressure roller 5 is operated by a cam 6 mounted on one end face of the gumming roller and is operable to raise periodically the cam roller 7 mounted on the'bell crank lever 8. The bell crank lever 8 is secured to the spindle 9 on which the arm 10 carrying the pressure roller 5 is mounted. i
A spring 11 is arranged to force the roller 5 into proximity with the gurmning roller 1 against the action of the cam 6.
One end of a link 12 is secured to the free end of an arm 12 arranged to extend radially from the spindle 9, the other end of which is secured to one arm of a bell crank lever 13, the other arm of which is controlled by a rod 14: which is operable to slide in the main frame 15. The rod 14 is arranged to be operated by a pivoted lever 16 connected by a link 17 to a crank 18 fixed to the shaft 19 of the striking gear.
In the drawing the apparatus is shownin the position the same occupies when the machine is stopped. When the striking gear shaft 19 is rotated in the direction of the arrow the lever l6 will be moved out of engagement with the end of the rod 14 which is permitted to move axially.
The bell crank lever 13 is arranged to be means for suspending the operation of said mechanism, and means operatively connected with said control means for retaining said mechanism out of web pressing position when the operation of said mechanism is suspended.
5. In apparatus for applying cork or like tips to a travelling web of cigarette paper, the combination with means for applying gum to said web, of mechanism operable to periodically press the web into engagement with said gum applying means, control means for suspending the operation of said mechanism, and means operatively connected with said control means for moving said mechanism out of web pressing position when operation thereof is suspended.
6. In apparatus for applying cork or like tips to a travelling web of cigarette paper, the combination with means for applying gum to said web, of mechanism operable to periodically press the web into engagement with said gum applying means, control means for suspending the operation of said mechanism, means operatively connected -with said control means for moving said mechanism out of web pressing position when operation thereof is suspended, and means for retaining said mechanism in such position for a predetermined period upon subsequent initiation of operation of the apparatus.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
FELIX FREDERIC RUAU.
