are built up of one or ,more layers of wires laid upon a central core of a substantially triangular shape. such flattened strands have consisted of a single wire of triangular section, or ot three round wires grouped in triangular formation.
In the former case, however, especially when the rope is subjected to excessive ifiexing under heavy compressional loads, the single triangular core Wire tends to fracture at the edges or corners, owing to the considerable radius from the axis of the wire at which the apices of the triangle are situater., and., more-over, the said triangular wire tends to cut and damage the adjacent covering Wires. In the other case, where the core is composed of three Wires grouped in triangular torination, the said Wires tend to open out or spread under compression, thereby deforming the shape of the strand. The object. of the present invention isV to provide an im- 2proved construction of Vcore for a ilattened strand, whereby the above disadvantages are avoided. p
According to the invention, the core consists of a single central Wire having three spaced longitudinal grooves, with Wires located in the said grooves, the arrangement being such as to forni a composite core of a triangular or substantially triangular form, with the Wires in the grooves lying at the corners of the triangle. The core thus formed may be given a spiral lay or twist and gives freedom of flexure to the rope Without being liable to fracture under coinpression.

Referring to 'the drawings, the improved rope is of the flattened strand type, and each strand is provided with a composite core comprising a central wire l of the section illustrated, formed with three longitudinal grooves 2 disposed parallel to one another and to the aX1s of the. Wire, and spaced at equal distances apart around the periphery. TheV said grooves 2 which are of substantially semi-circular section, respectively receive and constitute seatings for three circular-sectioned wires 3, the radius ot' the grooves beingl the sameV as that ot the wires. These round wires 3 are held by the grooves in denitely spaced relationship and the separated peripheral surfaces of the central Wire l, that is, the radial ribs or parts which are located between each pair of grooves, are slightly curved conveXly, as illustrated, the depth of the groove 2 in relation to the diameter of the round wires 3 being such that the centre Wirel and the outer wires 3 lie substantially flush andtogether form a core,
of substantially triangular contour, with theY Wires 3 situated at the corners or apices of the triangle. This formation is equivalent in shape to the ordinary single or solid triangular core, the round wires 3 taking the place or' the solid corners of the said triangular core. As the greatest distance from the axis to the periphery of the central .Wire is now considerably less than Would be the distance of the apices of an equivalent solid triangular core, the said central wireis not so liable to fracture under flexion and compression, suoli as when the wire is passing Yaround a pulley. Further, there are no sharp edges liable to cause injury to the covering wires 4 and 5. -Two layers of covering wires are shown, but one, two or more layers of covering wires may be provided, the said covering wires being laid helically around the composite core in the-usual manner in order to complete the strand, the composite core being given a definite spiral lay or twist during the process of forming the strand.
The central and outer wires 5 of the composite core may be of any other suitable cross sov sectional shape, provided they produce a core of a triangular or substantially triangular form, and instead oli' the grooves in the central Wire of the core being of a semi-circular 5 shape, as stated, they may be of a V-formation, or of any other suitable cross-sectional shape.
Having fully described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is l. A flattened strand for a Wire rope coniprising a single central Wire having three spaced longitudinal grooves, longitudinal Wires located in said grooves to produce a composite core of substantially triangular form, and covering Wires laid upon the said composite core.
2. A flattened strand for a Wire rope comprising a single central Wire having three n spaced longitudinal grooves, longitudinal Wires laid in said grooves to produce a coinposite core having substantially the contour ot a triangle with the said Wires disposed at the corners of the triangle, and covering wires l g5 laid upon the said composite core.

A flattened strand for a Wire rope comprising a single central Wire having three spaced longitudinal grooves, longitudinal wires of circular section laid in said grooves an to produce a core having substantially the contour of a triangle with the said Wires located at the corners of the triangle, and covering Wires laid upon the said composite core.

A flattened strand for a Wire rope comprising a single central Wire having three spaced longitudinal radial ribs separated by longitudinal grooves, longitudinal Wires lying in said grooves substantially lush With the outer surfaces of the ribs to form a com- 40 posit@ core having substantially'the contour ot' a triangle, and covering Wires laid upon the said composite core.
5. A lattened strand for a- Wire rope co1nprising a single central Wire having three spaced longitudinal grooves, longitudinal Wires laid in said grooves to produce a composite core ot substantially triangular contour said core being twisted spirally, and covering Wires laid spirally upon the said composite core.
6. A Wire rope comprising a plurality of ilattened strands of triangular contour each consisting of a single central Wire having three spaced longitudinal grooves, wires laid in said grooves to produce a composite core of triangular contour, and covering Wires laid on the said composite core.
