Fig.6 shows the same constructed so as to be formed of three pieces. f
Referring ,to the drawings, 1 indicates a blank suitable to form an end, section 2 of the package. This blank is of card board or sufliciently thick and stiff paper to maintain the form -of the section, and
is moulded or drawnby pressure with the aid of moisture and heat into the form shown in Fig. 2 so as to have an end panel 3, a bottom part 4, sides 5 and top flanges 6, 7 and 8. All these parts of the section are preferablyintegral and continuous with each other, so that each end section is Without cracks and gas-tight at its angles; but a hole 11 for the exit of air and entrance of gas is provided at a convenient point.
As illustrated the bottom parts 4 of the sections form one half of the bottom panel of the package but can be' in the form .of flanges like the flanges 6, Z and 8 to display the .goods .at the bottom as well as at the top of the package. l

In making the package two of the sections are brought together end to end at the same time enclosing the goods to be (packed, cigars or example, and are conveye to the wra ping station of the machine. Here they will arrive on the wrapper 9, preferably of cellophane, and the latter will be wrapped to enclose the top, bottom and sides of the sections 2. The wrapper 9 is a width equal to the length, of the two sections, .and need not extend so as to require to be foldedover the ends 3, and mechanism for such folding may be dispensed with. In this wrapping operation the wrapper is caused to adhere in a gas-tight mannerto the two sections; 2 on lines surrounding the tops, bottoms and sides of the sections. This J is effected by applying cellophane glue along the end edges 10 of the wrapper, or correspondingly around the sections, before or during the wra ping operation. The end sections are pre erably dlpped in cellophane solution or glue for a short distance from their .ends to prevent diffusion of the gas through the card board or paper of which the sections are composed, and to promote complete and gas-tight adhesion of thecellophane wrapper to the sections.- p

Then an inert gas, preferably nitro en gas, is admitted to the chamber at atmosp eric pressure and' will enter the hole 11 and fill all unoccupied spaces within the vacuumized package. Then the sis-treated package (or packages) is removef from the chamber and an adhesive is pressed on the package to adhere to the same and seal the hole 11.
In Fig. 5 I have illustrated a construction of the inner part or frame of the package to p which the wrapper 9 is not yet applied, especially adapted for smoking tobacco or snuff. In this constructiontthe bottom, sides and top flanges "are on one eiid section only, and the other end section has an end panel with short top, bottom and side flanges, and the bottom, sides and top flanges of the first mentioned section are entered within the second short section at the filling operation, after which j' the wrapper is applied and the package gasified as already described.
