MACHINE FOR Tami/ me METAL mm Application filed October 11, 1929. Serial No. 398,866. I i
- The object of the invention is to provide a' machme which receives one or two wheels which arerotated at selective speeds and are operated all together o-r-independently and in which a tool traverses the drums on the wheels to provide a smooth surface on which the brake bands bear. I
Another object of the invention is to provide a self-contained unit of this kind which needs only to be connected with a source of electric power and also one in which the supports for the wheels are relatively low in order to make it easy to place heavy truck wheels and the like on the spindles of the machine.
The machine is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a side view of my improved machine and Figure 2 is a top view thereof. Figure 3 is a cross section of part of the machine and showing the driving mechanism of the tool hold-er and the spindles. Figure 4 is a section on line 4-4 in Figure 3 and Figure 5 is a section on line 5-5 in Figure 3. Figure 6 is a perspective view of a part of the gear shift.
The machine illustrated comprises a base 10 on which is secured the casing llwhich "has a central compartment 12 for the inner turn the articles to be tooled. The-casing 11 also has the side tracks or rails 14 on which the tool carriages 15, are made to slide: The spindles 13 carry the articles such as wheels and brake drums and the tool carriages hold the tool shaft 16 which in turn hold the tools 17 which traverse the face such as the face 18 of the article shown at 19. p
' The machine is adapted to hold various sizes of wheels or hands and to be run at Various and different speeds. That is, the wheels at both ends of the machine can be turned at slow speeds or one can be turned slowly and the other turned at higher speed accordends of the spindles 13 which support and ing to the'requirements'. in each particular case.
The two spindles 13 are drivengeachby a gear connection, one connection consisting of y a gear 2.0QOIi one of the spindles 13 and a gear ii 21 onthe short shaft 22eandathe other consisting of a gear 23 on the other s'pindlesl3 and a gear 24. on. the short shaft 25. ,The shafts 22 and 25 are connected by gears2tfv and 27. The gear 27 is driven through a gear 36 shift mechanism from the mainshaft 28'. I
- The, main shaft is driven by a motor29 (see Figure 1) through the worm 30'and the worm gear 31.
The gear shift consistsiof; gear 32 i5 able on the main shaft 28 and driven thereby-.- The gear 32 and the idleigear. 33 are secured to the bracket 34 andare raised, loweredand turned by a 'ha-ndle35 on the bars,3 6of the bracket.v The bars 36 operatein: a slot 37 it? (see Figure 2) in the top of the housing 38 which covers the above described gear con,- nectio ns. The gear 33 can beswungto engage the multiple gear includingvgear 27 I above mentioneclor the gears 39 a nd 40, to i6 vary the speed of the shafts-22 and 25'. The ear 26 is connected at will to the shaft 25 by the clutch .40 operated by the yoke 41and the shaft 42 and handlef43. nThemultiple gear is connected to the shaft 22 throughthe clutch 44 operatedbyyoke 45 ion the shaft 46 and operated by handle 47 This'i'nechanism provides for the-selective operation and speed of, the/two oppositely extending spindles I3.
'The carriages 1.5 which travel back and 5e forth on" the tracks v14 are driven normally by the screws 48 which arearranged to rotate in hearings in the casing a'nd in the nuts 49 on the carriages 15. Each screw 485s rotated by a gear "50 in mesh with 'a'gear 51 96 on the shaft 52. The shaft 52 is coupled to ashaft 53 by the clutch 54. The shaft 52 has a longitudinal play and is provided with a hand wheel 55. When the wheel and v shaft 52 are pulled out to disengage the clutch 54, the carriage is moved by the hand wheel rotation. This is for adjustment of the car'- riage and its tool holder relative to the work. After adjustment is completed the clutch 54 is engaged and the tool operates on the work it:
by reason of the rotation of the shaft 53 by gear wheel 56 in mesh with gear 57 on shaft 58 which is geared at 59 to the main shaft 28.
The carriage 15 includes a fixture 60 which is slidable transversely on the tracks 61 by the screw 62 worked by handle 63. The fixture 60 is preferably rovided with the holders 64 in either or bot i of which the tool bars 16 can be held by bolts 65. i
It will be evident from this description and the drawings that the machines can be used to finish two brake drums at the same time, at selective speeds and in a short time. The utility of the machine will be apparent and changes can be made in the various parts without departing from the scope of my in- V vention.
I claim 1. A machine for trimming brake drums comprising a housing, a motor in the lower art of the housing, a pair of wheel-supporting spindles, one projecting from each end of the housing, mechanism enclosed in the upper part of the housing above the spindles, said mechanism being connected to the motor and the spindles and including clutches operate the spindles selectively, and carriages mounted to slide at the sides of the casing, tool holders for carrying tools beyond the casing for operation on wheels mounted on the spindles and a speed control device interposed in the said mechanism for controlling the speed of the spindles.
2. A machine for trimming brake drums comprising a housing, a motor in the lower part of the housing, a pair of wheel-supporting spindles, one projecting from each end of the housing, mechanism enclosed in the upper part of the housing above the spindles, said mechanism being connected to the motor and the spindles and including clutches operate the spindles selectively, and carriages mounted to slide at the sides of the casing, tool holders for carrying tools beyond the casing for operation on wheels mounted on the spindles, a speed control device interposed in the said mechanism for controlling the speed of the spindles and handles one on each clutch and one on the speed control device, said handles being arranged on the outside of the casing and at the top thereof to allow control from one point of the operation and speed of the spindles.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
ALBERT H. WADELL.
