This invention relates to speakers.
More particularly stated, the invention relates to an armature mounting for speak- .ers and has for its salientl object to provide a simple and practical mounting so constructed and arranged that the armature will be effectively supported and centered.
Another object of the invention is to 'so support the armature of a speaker as to dampen undesirable vibrations and improve the quality of the tone produced by the speaker.
Further objects of the invention will appear from the following'specification taken in connection with the drawings, which form a part vof this application, and in which Fig. 1 is an elevational view, partly in section, of a-n armature mounting constructed in accordance with the invention;
Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation taken substantially on line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation taken substantially on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
The invention briefly described consists of a construction comprising` an armature centrally supported in a speaker coil and adapted to coact with a pole piece or pole pieces, the armature being supported by one or more expansible and contractible members, such as sylphons or metallic bellows.
Further details of the invention will appear vfrom the following description.
In the form of the invention illustrated in the drawings, there is shown a unit comprising oppositely or inwardly extending pole pieces 10 and 11 surrounded respectively by polarizing coils 12 and 13 connected to suitable terminals 14 and 15. A speaker coil 2O is centrally mounted between the pole pieces 10 and 11 and an armature 21 is centrally supported in the coil 20. The ends of the speaker coil are connect-ed to suitable terminals 18 and 19. In the particular embodiment of the invention illustrated, the armaf5 ture consists of a hollow metallic shell.
The armature is supported on a pair ot sylphons or metallic bellows 25 and 26 which are expansible and contractible. The armature is secured to the inner closed ends 27 of the bellows which, as shown, are carried inner ends of the pole pieces 10 and 11 and one of the sylphons is connected by a rod 30 or in any other suitable manner to a sound reproducing device which, in the form of the invention illustrated, takes the form of a cone 31. The rod 30 extends through an opening 32 in the pole piece 11.

From the foregoing description it will be seen that the armature will be effectively centered and supported by the sylphons or bellows and will be maintained in central position with respect to the pole pieces and speaker coil, regardless of the vibration of' the armature, due to the expansible and contractible vnature of the supporting members or sylphons. Furthermore, it will be evident that the bellows or sylphons will have a n damping or cushioning effect on the movement of the armature, thus tending to suppress or eliminate undersirable vibrations or vibrations due to extraneous forces.
Although one specific embodiment of the invention has been particularly shown and described, it will be understood that the inventiony is capable of modification and that changes in the construction and in the arrangement of the various cooperating parts may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the inventionas expressed in the following claims.
What Iclaim is: i
1. In a speaker, a pole piece, an' armature mounted to coact therewith, a sound reproducing member connected to said armature, and expansible and contractible means surrounding said pole piece for supporting said armature.
2. In a speaker, a pole piece, an armature tmounted to coact therewith, a sound reproand an expansble and contractible bellows surrounding said pole piece for supporting said armature.
4. In a speaker, a pole piece, an armature coacting therewith, a sound reproducing member connected to said armature, an exypansible and contractible metallic bellows surrounding the pole piece and connected to the armature, a sound reproducing member, and a connection between said member and the armature extending through said bellows.
5. In a speaker, a pair of pole pieces, an armature disposed between said pole pieces, a pair of expansible and contractible casing members surrounding said pole pieces and connected to and supporting said armature, and a sound reproducing member connected to said armature.
6. In a speaker, a pair of pole pieces, an armature disposed between said pole pieces, a pair of expansible and contractible bellows connected to and supporting said armature, and a sound reproducing member connected to said armature.
7. In a speaker, a pole piece, an armature mounted to coact therewith, a sound reproducing member connected to said armature, and an expansible and contractible casing connected to and supporting said armature.
8. In a speaker, a pole piece, an armature mounted to coact therewith, a sound reproducing member connected to said armature, and an expansible and contractible casing forming a substantially closed chamber connected to and supporting said armature.
9. In a speaker, a pair of pole pieces, an armature disposed between sa-id pole pieces, a pair of expansible and contractible casings connected to and Supporting said armature, and asound reproducing member connected to said armature.
10. In a speaker, a speaker coil, an armature coacting therewith, and mea-ns for supporting said armature in said coil and comprising a metallic bellows fixedly supported at one end and connected to said armature at the opposite end.
11. In a speaker, a speaker coil, a hollow magnetic shell armature disposed therein, and oppositely extending means for supporting said armature.
12. In a device of the character disclosed, the combination with a magnetic pole piece and associated vibrating element, of a-n eX- pansible and contractible bellows surround-y ing said pole piece and supporting said vi- 16. In a device of the character disclosed,
the combination of opposed pole pieces, a hollow magnetic shell positioned between said pole pieces and an eXpa-nsible and contractible bellows supporting said hollow magnetic armature in cooperative relation to said pole pieces.
