ROD FOR SUSPENDING CURTAINS ON DOORS AND WINDOWS Filed Juiy 27, 1929 Patented Aug. 18, 1931 UNITED STATES WILI-IELM HELMER NORLING, OF STOGKI-IOLM, SWEDEN ROD FOR SUSPENDING CURTAINS ON DOORS AND WINDOWS Application filed July 27, 1929, Serial- No. 381,535, and in Sweden May 30, 1929.
' With inwardly opening doors it is diflicult to hang a curtain or the like in a practical manner. If the curtain is in two halves the rod fitted above the door or Window must be so long that the two halves of the curtain may be drawn to the two sides so that the door can be opened without hindrance. If the curtains are drawn together an opening is always left through which the door can be seen, which detracts from the appearance.
WVith one piece curtains a very long rod is not necessary but the rod must be of such a length that the curtain can be drawn to one side and thereby the door freely opened. Through the drawing backwards and forwards of the curtain it is naturally subjected to wear whereby it loses in appearance.
The present invention relates to a rod for door and window curtains which overcomes the above-mentioned disadvantages in that the rod with the curtain participates in the movement of the door or window without changing its position in relation to the door or window.
Several embodiments of the invention are illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which i Fig. 1 shows in front elevation the construction of the rod fitted in position.

In all the figures 1 is the inwardly opening door with the frame 2 and one door hinge 3.
According to the constructions shown in Fig. -1 the curtain rod is composed of two parts 4a-4ib connected to the door by bars 5. The shorter part is slidably mounted on a bracket 6 fixed to the wall. The two parts of the rod are hingedly connected together by a covered helical spring 7 (Fig. 2) which is secured by screws or rivets 8 to the two parts 4a4b. The hinged connection in the rod is situated above the hinge 3 so that a curtain suspended over the rod need not be drawn to the side when opening the door, as it folds on the hinge connection of the rod and participates in the movement of the door. The short part 1?) of the rod must move slightly to the right when the door is moved as the rod has to perform a greater movement than the door.
According to the construction in F 3 the rod 9 is made in one piece and hingedly connected by means of link bars 10 with the bars 11 fixed to the door. As soon as the door is opened one end of the rod 9 strikes against a plate 12 fastened to the wall so that the rod turns on the links and slides parallel to the door. If the door is closed a spring 13 fastened to one of the link bars 10 pulls the rod with the curtain to its initial positon.
According to the construction shown in, Figs. 6-9 the rod is also made in one piece. Contrary to the construction shown in Fig. 3 the end of the rod l lrdoes not strike against the wall, butthis end is pivotally mounted in a bracket 15 fixed to the wall whereas the other end is oscillatably connected by means of a link bar 16 to a bracket 17 secured to the so door.
When opening the door the rod 14 turns with its end in the bracket 15 whereas the other end moves away from the door.
