This invention relates to certain improvements H1 mechanism for controlhng the tension on a web unwinding from a web roll,' and has been designed particularly for use with web rolls in printingmachines.
It is the especial object of the present invention to produce afweb roll controlling mechanism employing tension devices in the form of belts or straps which engage the surface of the roll and in which the tensiondevices are mounted or anchored so that the anchored ends of the belts or straps are held closely against the web roll at all times during its unwinding, thus causing the straps to engage the surface of the roll with a substantiallyconstant arc of contact around the surface of the roll as the roll decreases in size, so that the roll unwinds under the desired tension as it runs to the press.
A further object of the invention is to provide a construction in which the means for securing or anchoring the ends of the straps or belts are located below the rolls so' that a rotary support may be provided for carrying a running roll and a spare roll, into which the spare rolls may be loaded successively and moved into contact with the straps or belts without interference, whereby only one set of straps or belts is necessary and space is economized, this latter feature being important in large presses.
With these and other objects not specifically referred to in view,'the invention consists in certain novel parts, arrangements and combinations which will be described in connection with the accompanying drawings and the novel featurespointed out in the claims hereunto annexed.
In these drawings, which show preferred embodiments of the invention,--
Figure 1 is an end view of one form of web roll support embodying the invention;
Figure 2 is a side view of part of the construction shown in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is an end view of a modified form of roll support which may be used if desired, and I Figure 4 is a side view of part of the construction shown in Figure 3.
Referring now to these drawings and first to Figures 1 and 2, the various parts of the mechanism are supported in suitable side frames 1, one of which is shown. Mounted in these side frames is a suitable roll su port capacitated to carry a running roll ll and a spare roll S. In the construction illustrated in. Figures 1 and 2, this support is a rotary support, the running position of the rolls being that at the right in Figure 1 and the loading position at the left in that figure, the'support being rotated from loading to running position in any suitable manner, not illustrated. While the specific character of the support may vary, as shown, it compr1ses a pair of arms '2, one of which is shown supported on a shaft 3 suitably journalled in the side frames. The arms, on opposite sides of the shaft 3, are formed with bearings 4 for supporting chucks 5 in which the paper rolls are mounted, it being understood that this construction isduplicated on each side of the machine.
For controlling the tension of the running roll as it unwinds, there is provided a flexible tension device, shown in the form of a narrow belt or strap 6. Any desired number of these belts or straps may beemployed, two or three being generally used in practice. It will be understood, however, that the number may be varied, or a less number of wider straps or belts thanthose shown may be used if desired. These straps engage the surface of the roll, passing over pulleys 7 8, and have secured thereto, at one end, an adjustable weight, as 9, the other end of these straps being secured or anchored at a oint below the roll and in such a manner t at the arc of contact with the-roll is maintained substantially constant as the roll decreases in able tension devices, so that they are conbelts or straps are secured in blocks 14 fast on the rod 10.
Tension means are provided for causing the rod to follow the roll as the roll decreases in size, the anchor rod sliding on the guides 12. In the particular construction illustrated for effecting this, the guide 12. at one side of the machine, has secured thereto a hub 15 which supports a stud 16 on which is a pulley 17 over'which passes a chain or the like 18, this chain carrying at one end an adjustable weight 19, and being secured at its other end to an ear 20 secured to the If de-' sleeve hub 11, before referred to. sired, a guard, such as a roll 21, may be secured on the anchor rod 10 to prevent fric tional contact between the rod and the running roll.
With the construction and arrangement of the parts described, it will be seen that a substantially constant are of contact is maintained on the surface of the roll by the belts or straps during the unwinding of the roll, and the parts are so arranged that the rolls may be loaded in the support without interference, and but one set of tension devices is necessary for the web rolls, the latter being rotatable from loading position to running position in contact with the straps or belts.
In Figures 3- and 4 a slightly modified form of support and anchor device for the straps is shown. In this construction the ends of the strapsor belts are secured to a lug 22 which is carried on arms 23 carried on a rock shaft 24 suitably supported in standards 25 rising from a bed 26 of the machine. Tension means are provided for forcing the lug 22 toward the roll surface, which in the particular construction illustrated comprises a web 27 supported on an arm 28 carried on the rock shaft 24. If desired, an adjustable stop 29 may be provided for limiting the downward movement of the arm 28.
While the invention has been shown and described in its preferred form, it will be understood that certain changes and variations may be made in the specific construction and arrangement of the parts Without departing from the invention as'defined in the appended claims.
lVhat I claim is:
1. In a web roll controlling mechanism, the combination of a movable support for supporting a spare web roll and a running web roll, a flexible tension device engaging the surface of the running roll, and anchoring means for anchoring one end of the tension device below the running roll and supported to move with the roll and closely adj acent thereto when the support is moved to bring the web roll to a normal running position so that the anchored end is held closely adjacent the roll at all times during its unwinding and thus cause the tension device to engage the roll surface with a substantially constant are of contact as the roll decreases in s1ze.
2. In a Web roll controlling mechanism, the combination. ofa movable support for supporting a spare web roll and a running web roll, a flexible tension device engaging the surface of the running roll, anchoring means for anchoring one end of the tension device below the running roll and supported to move with the roll and closely adjacent thereto when the support is moved to bring the web roll to a normal running position so that the anchored end is held closely adjacent the roll at all times during. its unwinding and thus cause the tension device to engage the roll with a substantially constant are of contact as the roll decreases in size, and meansconnected With the anchoring means for forcing the anchored end of the tension devices into engagement with the roll.
3. In a web roll controlling mechanism, the combination of a movable support for a running web roll and a spare web roll, straps or belts engaging the surface of the running roll, an anchor bar to which one end of the straps is secured and located below the running roll and supported to move with the roll and closely adjacent thereto when the support is moved to bring the roll to a normal running position, and means for holding the anchor bar in close proximity to the roll as the roll unwinds.
4. In a Web controlling mechanism, the combinationof a rotary carrier for a running web roll and a spare web roll, straps or belts engaging the surface of the running roll, movable supports, an anchor bar to which one end of the straps or belts is secured mounted in the supports below the roll and supported to move with the roll and closely adjacent thereto when the support is moved to bring the roll to a normal running position and means for moving a support to hold the bar in close proximity to the roll as the roll unwinds.
5. In a web controlling mechanism. the combination of a carrier for a. running web roll and a spare web roll, straps or belts en- I gaging the surface of the running roll. movable supports, an anchor bar to which one end of the straps or belts is secured mounted in the supports below the roll and supported to move with the roll and closely adjacent thereto when the support is moved to bring the roll to a normal running position, and weights connected with the supports for holding the bar towards the roll as the roll unwinds.
6. In a web roll controlling mechanism, the combination of a movable support for a running web roll and a spare web roll, straps or belts engaging the surface of the running web roll, anchor means to which one end of the straps are secured located below the running web roll and closely adjacent thereto, and means independent of the straps for preventing thev anchor means from contacting with the web as the web roll unwinds.
7. In a web roll controlling mechanism,
the combination of a movable support for a running web roll and a spare web roll, straps or belts engaging the surface of the running web roll, anchor means to which one end of the straps are secured located below the running web roll and closely adjacent thereto, means for holding the anchor means in close proximity to the web roll as it unwinds, and
, means independent of the straps for preventmg the anchor means from contacting with the web as the web roll unwinds.
8. In a web roll controlling mechanism, the combination of 'a movable support for a running web roll and a spare web roll, straps or belts enga ing the surface of the running web roll, anc or means to which one end of the straps are secured located below the running web roll and closely adjacent thereto, means for holding the anchor means in close proximity to the web roll as it unwinds, and a roll independent of the straps cooperating with the anchor means to prevent the anchor means from contacting with the web as the roll unwinds.
9. In a Web roll controlling mechanism, the combination of a movable support for a running web roll and a spare web roll, straps or belts engaging the surface of the running roll, an anchor bar to which one end of the straps is secured located below the running roll and closely adjacent thereto, radially arranged side guides, and connections engaging the anchor bar and having a sliding movement on the guides.
10. In a web roll controlling mechanism, the combination of a movable support for a running web roll and a spare web roll, straps or belts engagin the surface of the running roll, an anchor ar to which one end of the straps is secured located below the running roll and closel adjacent thereto, bearings for the anchor bar, side guides on which the bearings have a sliding movement, and tension means connected to the bearings for holding the anchor bar in close proximity to the roll as the roll unwinds.
