B? m m Patented Aug. 18, 1931 warren A STATES PERCIVAL JOHN PURDY, OF LONDGN, ENGLAND BOTTLE AND o'rnna LrlnnLrNe MACHINE Application filed August 9, 1929, Serial No. 384 .545, and in Great Britain October 24,1928.
ing to apply the label to the bottle. As at present generally constructed in machines of this type the article, a bottle. for example, is placed by hand on a support Where it remains whilst wipers act to complete the application of thelabel.
The present invention has for its object certain improvements according to which the bottle or other article is automatically presented to the machine, and further provides means for completing the application of the. label, which means are not directly associated with the labeling members of the machine itself.
According to one form of this invention an endless band or belt running transversely of the machine is provided, which belt may receive an intermittent movement through geneva-stop or other suitable mechanism which may be driven independently of the main machine. The belt is provided with suitably spaced cradles or other supports for the bottles, and said belt carries the articles into and out of position for the application of the labels. 'In order to complete their application there'is or are provided one or more wipers, the action of which is suitably timed to cause them, when the belt is at rest, to come into action and wipe or press the labels. In addition to the Wipers, printing or dating means may be provided.
The action of the wipers or the like may conveniently be secured by means of lever or other mechanism actuated by cam or other mechanism mountedfupon a shaft from the main machine or otherwise.
The invention may be applied either to machines where the bottles or other articles are placed horizontally, or where same are in a vertical position whilst the labeling'is effected. By means ofthe invention, by duplicat-ing the'necessary parts, two or more articlesmay besimultaneously moved and the wipers, -which may either have a reclprocal motion towards and away from the articles, or they may be'relatively fixed or spring mounted. i
Instead of being connected to and carrying the article's automatically tothe labelingpo sition, theintermittently actuated conveyor with the wipers'may be used as anauXiliary to an existing labeling machine to fu'rther wipeand so ensure the better attachment of the labels.
In'order that the invention may be the better understood the following drawings are appended in which P Fig. 1 is a 'front elevation of a device constructed in accordance'with one form of the present inventionas applied to the labeling 'of'bottle's. I
