This invention relates, generally, to cylinders and supporting structures therefor, and contemplates a three piece construction comprising the cylinder saddle, and two side cylinders. i
An object of the invention is to provide a simpler and stronger connection between the locomotive frames and the cylinder assembly. Another object is to combine 1o cylinder saddle and adjacent cross ties in a one piece or integral construction. Another object of the invention is to provide improved means for proper attachment of the engine truck center pin or center pin guide. A further object is to provide means for obviating leaks in the exhaust steam connections. Another object is to provide for making the cylinder saddle of cast steel and the cylinders of cast iron. 'A further object is to provide a disposition of the bolts and nuts for securing the saddle to the frames and the cylinders to the saddle so that they will be readily accessible to the operator. Other objects of the invention will hereinafter appear. The conventional'type of cylinder construction embodying two parts joined at the center line of the locomotive, does not provide as much bolting area for attachment to the main frames as is desirable for many of the large sizelocomotives now being built. Furthermore the attachment of the various cross ties and truck center pin or center pin guide presents a matter of considerable difficulty. In the present invention thecylinder saddle is formed separate from the cylinders and is provided with front and rear extensions to provide additional bolting areawand to take the place of the fore and aft cross ties formerly used.

It is to be noted that the front extension, in addition to providing a greatly extended area for bolting the saddle to the main frames, also takes the place of the cross tie formerly employed for bracing the structure.
The rear extension, 10?), comprises a horizontal reinforcing web,10a, and two vertical side walls, 101), adapted to fit against the main frame, and to receive the bolts 10w, which pass through the main frame. It is to be noted that the rear extension in addi tion to providing a greatly extended area for bolting the saddle to the main frames, also takes the place of the cross tie formerly employed for bracing the structure. The front and the rear walls of the saddle 10 are each provided with a manhole 10m to permit ready access to the attaching bolts.
The exhaust connection for each steam chest, comprises a cast elbow 14, which is housed inside the saddle and is fitted with a ball joint ring on the lower end that projects through an opening in a side wall of the saddle and fits into the oppositely formed end of a conduit 15, leading from the steam chest 16. The lower end of the elbow is provided with a bolting flange by which the joint ring of the conduits 14 and 15 is drawn into steam tight fit, the flange being bolted to the cylinder casting 11 by bolts (not shown). The upper end of the elbow 14 is provided with a flange for bolting it by bolts (not shown) to the exhaust passa e 19.
The engine truck center pin 17, in the ease of four wheel trucks, is recessed in the bottom wall, 1072., of the saddle, providing an extremely simple and rigid construction. In the case of two wheel trucks, the center pin guide may be formed integrally with the front extension of the cylinder saddle.
In assembling the improved construction the saddle member 10 is first fastened to the main frames by the bolts 10m, 10g, and 1020, and the cylinders are next attached, all of the bolts 10% being driven from the inside so that the nuts are open for inspec tion at all times. The cylinders are held 10a but by a suitable key 18, applied from the outside, and having a very slight taper and only enough draw to properly position and secure the cylinders.
An important advantage of the invention is the greatly increased bolting area provided for securing the saddle to the main frames. Anotheradvantage of the invention is the provision of a saddlemember combining in an integral structure the sad dle proper and means performing with increased efiicieney the reinforcing functions formerly performed by separate cross ties. A further advantage of the invention is the provision of a leak proof exhaust steam connection through the saddle which is eco nomical to manufacture and easy to install and maintain. A further advantage of the invention is that the saddle may be made of cast steel and the cylinder castings of cast iron so that in the event of cylinder failure repairs can be economically and expeditiously effected.
While one of the preferred embodiments of the invention has been described it is to be understood that various changes in form, proportions, material, and assembly may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention set forth in the appended claims.
The invention claimed. and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is:
1. A one piece cast structure adapted to be interposed between and secured to, the main frame side members of a locomotive, comprising a cylinder saddle having cylinder engaging side walls each formed with a recess for the reception of a main frame side member; and a rear extension embodying a longitudinal. flange at each side adapted to be bolted to one of the main frame side members, and a transverse member connecting and reinforcing the flanges, said ex tension being of a length and strength to take the place of a cross tie.
2. A one piece cast structure adapted. to be interposed between and secured to, the main frame side members of a locomotive, comprising a cylinder saddle having cylinder engaging side walls; a rear extension embodying a longitudinal flange at each side adapted to be bolted to one of the main frame side members, and a transverse member connecting and reinforcing the flanges; and a front extension embodying a longitudinal flange at each side, adapted to be bolted to one of the main frame side members, and a transverse member connecting and reinforcing the flanges.
3. A one piece cast structure adapted to be interposed between and secured to, the main frame side members of a locomotive, comprising a cylinder saddle having cylinderengaging side walls; a center pin disposed beneath the saddle; and a front and a rear extension, each extension embodying a longitudinal flange at each side each adapted to bebolted to one of the main frame side members, and a transverse member connecting and reinforcing the flanges.
4. A one piece cylinder saddle casting, comprising side walls each formed intermediate its top and bottom with a longitudinal recess adapted to receive a locomotive main frame side member, said recess having holes at its side for bolts. for attaching the casting'to a main frame side member, each of the portions of each side wall, above and below the recess, having a longitudinal row of holes for bolts'for attaching a cylinder casting to the saddle, and two laterally projecting vertical flanges adapted to cooperate with the bolts to hold the cylinder casting in place.
5. A one piece cast structure adapted to be interposed between and attached to the main frame side members of a locomotive, comprising a cylinder saddle, having side walls each formed intermediate its top and bottom with a longitudinal recess adapted to receive a locomotive main frame side member, both portions of each sidewall above and below the recess being provided with holes for bolting a cylinder casting to the saddle; and extensions to the front and the rear of the saddle each extension embodying a longitudinal flange at each side ber connecting and reinforcing the flanges.
6. A locomotive cylinder saddle adapted to be interposed between and attached to the locomotive main frame side members, and comprising a one piece casting embodying a top and side walls each formed with an opening each of the side walls being adapted for the attachment of a cylinder casting; and an exhaust steam pipe elbow detachably fitted within the saddle through the top wall opening and a side wall opening, the ends of said elbow having bolting flanges adapting it to be bolted at its lower end to a working cylinder exhaust passage and at its upper end to the smokebox exhaust passage, whereby a steam tight joint may be effected. p
7. A one piececasting adapted to be interposed between and secured to, the main frame side members of a locomotive, comprising a cylinder saddle having oppositely disposed cylinder engaging side walls provided each with an exhaust pipe opening; a
support for the locomotive boiler between and in line with said side walls havmg an exhaust pipe opening; and a front extension embodying a longitudinal flange at each side adapted to be bolted, to one of the main frame side members, and a transverse member connecting and reinforcing the flanges, said extension being of a length and strength to take the place of a cross tie.
8. A one piece casting adapted to be interposed between and securedto, the main frame side members of a locomotive, comprising a cylinder saddle having cylinder engaging side walls; and a front extension embodying a longitudinal flange at each side adapted to be bolted to one of the main frame side members, and a transverse member connecting and reinforcing the flanges, having a flange at its front end for bolting to a bumper casting. i
9. In a locomotive the combination of main frame side members; a one piece cast structure having a front extension, interposed between and secured to, said members throughout its entire length, said structure having side walls; and detachable working cylinders supported on said side walls.
10. In a locomotive the combination of main frame side members; a one piece cast structure having a front extension, interposed between and secured to said members, said members being extended forwardly of said structure, said structure having side Walls; detachable working cylinders supported on said side walls; and a bumper casting adjacent the forward end of said structure between the forward ends of said members.
11. In a locomotive the combinationof a steam boiler; main frame side members; a one piece cast structure having front and rear extensions, interposed between and secured to, said members throughout its entire length, said structure having side walls; de-
tachable working cylinders supported on Y members, and a transverse member connecting and reinforcing the flanges, said extension being of a length and strength to take the place of a cross tie; and detachable working cylinders having walls supported on and secured to said side walls, the said walls of the cylinders and saddle being spaced apart over a portion of their opposed surfaces providing housings for the side members.
