called waver rollers, that is to say rollers to which movement is imparted'for the pur pose of assisting in the distribution of the ink over the surface of the inking cylinders whereby the ink is forced through the openings in the stencil.
With duplicating machines of this kind,
one or a pair of such waver rollers are provided to which axial motion is imparted by 1 a lever oscillating about an axis at right angles to the axis of rotation of the inking cylinder or inking cylinders, the ends of the waver rollers being engaged in open bearingsprovided on these levers, of which in a known arrangement there are two, located at opposite ends of the inking cylinders and in order to remove the waver roller, or the waver rollers as the case may be, it is necessary to engage the ends of the spindles 95 thereof and to raise the same out of the said bearings after which the waver rollers or roller may be moved axially and withdrawn through an o ening inthe side frame of the machine, the replacement of the waver rollers involving the insertion of the same through the opening and the engagement of the ends of the spindles thereof in the afore- "said bearings.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide means adapted to facilitate the removal for cleaning or other purposes and the replacement of the waver rollers.
One feature of the invention comprises 0 the provision of aplurality of waver rollers in association with an inking cylinder and the provision of means whereby to one or certain thereof axial motion is imparted in the normal operation of the machine.
A further feature of the invention consists, broadly, in the provision of means associated. with the frame of the machine adapted to be actuated to bring the waver roller or waver rollers after they have been inserted through an opening in'the side frame of the machine so as to rest upon an inking cylinder, into the appropriate workmgr position. y
- bus, in accordance with the invention, means may be provided adapted to be actuated, when the waver roller or waver rollers as the case may be have been passed through the opening in the side frame of the machine and rest upon one of the inking cylinders thereof, to engage against the spmdle go of the waver roller or the spindles of the waverrollers, as the case may be, and bring the same into the operative position with respect to the inking cylinder and optionally to cause the waver roller or one or both of the waver rollers, when a plurality thereof are provided, to engage the means adapted to impart axial motion thereto during the normal operation of the machine.
In one construction in accordance with the invention, in which a pair of inking cy1inders are provided over which the stencil, connected to flexible bands in driving engagement with the cylinders, is caused to travel there is provided on each of the side frames a pair of levers adapted to be moved about a common axis to cause the levers to engage or bear against the spindles of the waver rollers and thereby to move them towards the plane in which the axes of rotation of the inking cylinders lie.
Conveniently each pair of levers is mounted upon the spindle of one, and preferably the upper of the inking cylinders.
Normally the pair of levers will be interconnected by means adapted to cause each member of a pair to move simultaneously and in corresponding degree or extent about its axis.
Thus, for instance, each lever of a pair maybe provided with means engaging a further lever or the like by the motion of which each member of the related pair of levers will be caused to move correspondingly in degree or extent about their common axis.
To this end each member of a pair of levers may be provided with a slot of suitable form in which is enga ed a pin provided on the further lever w ich is conveniently formed with a thumb piece to facilitate its actuation. v
To constrain the two members of a pair of levers to move towards one another in bringing the waver rollers into their operative position a spring comiection may be provided between the levers.
Ordinarily the portions of the levers adapted to bear against or to engage'the spindles of the waver rollers are conveniently provided with curved surfaces adapted to facilitate the movement of the waver rollers into their working position. For engaging one or both of the waver rollers with means whereby during the eration of the machine it may be move in an axial direction, the lever adapted tooscillate about an axis at right an les to the axis of rotation of the inking cy mders for securing such motion of the waver rollers may be provided with a boss adapted to engage a circumferential groove in the spindie of the waver roller.
For facilitatin such engagement the end of the waver rofier spindle to which axial motion is imparted is preferably provided with two reversely tapered or coned portions with a extremities of these portions w ile the base of the boss on the lever is coned to co-operate with said portions when the lever is oscillated into ensuing engagement of the .of the same with respect to the i boss with .the groove.

In the drawings, 1 and 1a represent the roove between the ad'acentlarger side members of the frame of the machine. The inking c linders are indicated by the references 2 an 211, the u per of these cylinders being shown remove 1n Figure 2. 3 in Figure 1 is an endless flexible stencil carrier WhlCh is arranged in known manner to travel over the inking c linders. On the spindle 4 of the upper i two levers 5 and 511' connected together by a spring 6 and provided with slots 7 and 7 a in which engages a pin 8 provided on the lever 9 pivoted at 10 to the frame of the machine. By motion of the lever 9 in a downward direction the levers 5 and 5a may be moved about their pivotal connection with the spindle of the upper inking cylinder to facilitate inserting the waver rollers 11 and 11a through an opening 12 in the side members of the frame of the machine. These rollers are respectively provided with knobs 13 and 13a to facilitate handling them and onthe spindle 14 of one of the rollers are provided two reversely directed ta ered portions 15, between which is a zone 0 reduced diameter 16 in which the. arms of the levers 5 will engage to secure the roller 11 from axial motion.

One end of the spindle is also provided with two conical portions 19 'and 20, between the bases of which conical portions a groove 21 is left and in this groove engages a boss 22 secured on one end of the bell crank-lever 23 pivotally mounted by the screw 24 to the side frame of the machine and provided with a hole 25 engaging a lever 26 pivotally mounted so that 1t may be oscillated about the axis of the spindle 27 of the inking cylinder 2a by means not shown in the drawings but of any suitablecharacter actuated through a handle or other source of motion whereby the inking cylinders and other moving parts of the machine are operated. The oscillatory motion thus imparted to the lever causes it to move the lever 23 about its pivotal connection with the side of the frame and in consequence of the engagement of the boss 22 in the groove 21, ax1al motion is imparted to the waver roller 11a.
The base of the boss 22 is formed as a truncated .cone 28, the peripheral surfaces of which are arranged to cooperate with the conical portions 19, 2O provlded on the end of the spindle 17 of the waver roller 11a to facilitatemngagement-of the boss in the groove 21.
In placing the waver rollers in position it is merely necessary in the. construction no i thus caused to move the waver rollers towards the plane in which the axes of the inking cylinders lie.
Actuation of the machine through the drivin means provided for this purpose will efiect rotation of the inking cylinders and also oscillation of the lever 26 and through it the oscillation of the lever 23 thus, if the boss 22 is not already engaged in the groove 21, causing the conical surface of the base 28 of the boss 22 to contact with one or other of the conical portions'19 and 20 on the spindle of the waver roller, one end of the latter will thereby be raised due to the conical portions of the spindle riding over the base 28 until the boss 22 is brought into register and engages with the groove 21 when, the end of the spindle descending into its normal position, continued oscillatory motion of the lever 23 will impart to the waver roller its normal axial motion.
While in the detailed description giv en above reference has been made to a construction comprising pivoted levers, whereby the waver roller or waver rollers are brought into their appropriate position, itis to be understood that the invention is not limited to constructions comprising levers, as any mechanical equivalent of such members may be employed for the purpose. For instance,
members may be slidably mounted in guides on the machine in such manner that they may be moved into or out of position to engage against theends of the spindles of the waver rollers.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A stencil duplicating machine comprising a frame, a plurality of impermeable ink-- ing cylinders rotatably mounted in said frame adapted to force the ink through openings in the stencil, waver rollers associated with said inking cylinders for assisting in distributing the ink thereover, openings in the frame through which the waver rollers may be inserted and means associated with the frame adapted on the insertion of the waver rollers to bring the same into the operative position with respect to the inkin cylinders.

stencil duplicating machine comprisa frame, a plurality of impermeable 3 3. i 'ng cylinders rotatably mounted in said frame adapted to force the ink through openings in the stencil, waver rollers associated with said inking cylinders for assisting in distributing the ink thereover, openings in the frame through which the waver rollers may be inserted, a pair of levers adjacent to one end of an inking cylinder, a common pivotal mounting for said levers, a pair of levers adjacent to the other end of the said cylinder, a common pivot co-axially with the pivotal mounting of the'first-mentioned levers, means associated with said ppir of levers adapted to cause each member 0 a the axis of its pivotal mounting into a position adapted to permit the waver rollers to be inserted through openings in the frame and thereafter to be moved into a position .whereby the levers engage the waver rollers which the .waver rollers may be inserted,

A stencil duplicating machine com-. prising a frame, a pluralit of impermeable linking cylinders rotatab y mounted one above the other in said frame, a pair of waver rollers associated with said inking cylinders for'assistin in distributing the ink thereover,. a spin e extending beyond the end of one of the waver rollers, two reversely tapered portions, a groove between the larger ends of the tapered portions on the portion of the spindle so extending, a lever pivoted on the frame of the machine adapted to oscillate about an axis at rightangles to the axis of rotation of the inking cylinders thereof and a boss on one end of said lever adapted to engage in the groove in the waver roller spindle.

A stencil duplicating machine com prising a frame, a plurality of impermeable inking cylinders rotatably. mounted one above the other in said frame, a pair of waver rollers associated with said inking cylinders for assisting in distributing the ink thereover, a spindle extendng beyond the end of one of the waver rollers, two reversely tapered portions with a groove between them on the portion of the spindle so extending, a lever pivoted on the frame of the machine adapted to oscillate about an axis at right-angles to the axis of rotation of the inking cylinders thereof, a boss on one end of said lever adapted to engage in the groove in the waver roller spindle and a conical base on said boss adapted to facilitate such engagement.

A stencil duplicating machine comprising a frame, a plurality of impermeable inking cylinders rotatably mounted one above the other in said frame, a pair of waver rollers associated with said inking cylinders for assisting in distributing the ink thereover, a spindle extending beyond the end of one of the waver rollers, two reversely tapered portions with a groove between them on the portion of the spindle so extending, a lever ivoted on the frame of the machine adapte to oscillate about an axis at right-angles tothe axis of rotation of the inking cylinders thereof and a boss on one end of said lever adapted to engage in the groove in the waver roller spindle, a groove in each end of the spindle of the other waver roller adapted to be engaged by one member of each pair of pivoted levers to restrain the said waver roller from axial motion in the normal operation of the machine.

A stencil duplicating machine comprising a frame, a plurality of impermeable inking cylinders, rotatably mounted one above the other in said frame, a pair of waver rollers associated with said inking cylinders for assisting in distributing the ink thereover, a spindle extending beyond the end of one of the waver rollers, two reversely tapered portions with a groove between them on the portion of the spindle so extending, a lever pivoted on the frame of the machine adapted to oscillate about an axis at right-angles to the axis of rotation of the inking cylinders thereof, a boss on one end of said lever adapted to engage GEORGE ERNEST CREED.
