provide a battery terminal which may be easily and expeditiously applied to and removed from the pole of a battery.
Another object of the invention is theprovision of an improved battery terminal embodying a movable jaw which facilitates attaching the terminal to the pole of astorage battery and removing it therefrom.
A further object of the invention is the provision of an improved battery terminal construction of the character described herein which embodies an improved construction for attaching a battery cable thereto. Another obj eat of the invention is the provision of an improved battery terminal con- 5 struction which will not corrode nor become cemented to the pole of a battery.
Other objects will appear hereinafter. The invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be 530 hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of construction and'in which:

My invention includes a device which may be made of any suitable electrical conducting material and included in my improved device. is a stationary jaw generically indicated at 13 and a movable jaw generically indicated at 14; and these jaws are adapted to be mounted on a battery pole such as 12 bymeans of a suitable threaded bolt 15 and nut 16. Integral with the stationary jaw 13 is a neck portion generically indicated at 17 which provides a connection for the battery cable 18 as will be explained more fully hereinafter. i
The stationary jaw 13 includes a head portion 19 in which is provided an opening 20. A shoulder 21 is provided in the head portion 19 and a similar shoulder 22 is provided in the head portion 23 of the movable jaw 14. An opening 24 similar to the opening 20 is formed in the head portion 23 of the movable jaw 14 and'when these jaw portions are mounted on a battery pole and a suitable connecting'element such as bolt 15 is inserted through the openings 20 and 24 it is manifest that when the jaws are forced together into clamping position around the battery pole the shoulders 21 and 22 will come into abutting engagement thereby preventing the inner faces 25 and 26 of the head portions19 and 23 from coming into contact, which arrangement prevents these faces from becoming cemented together and permits. a suitable tool such as a screw driver to be inserted between the head portions 19 and 23 to facilitate separation of the jaws when detaching the terminal from the pole of a battery.
The movable jaw 14 includes an arcuated portion 27 interiorly of which is provided a concave recess 28 and a similar concave recess 29 is provided in an arcuated portion 30 of the stationary jaw 13 thereby defining a substantially oval-shaped opening 31 into which the battery pole may be fitted.
In the form of constructlon shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4, the end'portion 32 of the movable jaw 14 is bifurcated :to provide arms 33 and 34 which are spaced'apart a sufiicient'distance to allow the neck portion 35 of the stationary jaw to be inserted between these arms 33 and 34. It may be seen, therefore, by referring to Fig. 2, that when the nut 16 on bolt 15 is unloosened to remove the terminal from a battery pole the head portion 23 of the movable jaw 14 may be moved outwardly while the arms 33 and 34 ride the neck portion 35 thereby keeping the movable jaw 14 in vertically aligned position with the stationary aw thereby retaining the jaws in position relative to each other so that they may again be tightened into operative position on a battery pole while it is manifest that this arrangement of these jaws prevents the terminal from becoming struck to the battery pole.
The neck portion 17 includes an annular flange 36 outwardly of which is a substantially semi-circular neck portion 37 which connects the flange 36 with a substantially U-sha ped portion 38 which provides upstanding ears 39 and 40. As shown in Fig.
l, in connecting the battery cable 18 to my improved device th-eend of the cable is inserted through the U-shaped portion 38 so that; the end thereof rests against the flange '36., The ears 39 and 40 are then bent downwardly, by means ofany suitable tool over the end portion of the cable to secure the cable in position. i
In the fornrof construction shown in Fig. 5, I provide a boss 41 on the neck portion 35 and in this form of construction I make the arm 33 of the movable jaw 14 larger than the arm 33is in the form of construction shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4, as indicated at 33anda similar elongated portion is provided on the arm 34. Extending through the arm 33', through the boss 41, and through the elongated portion of arm 34 similar to the portion 33 is an opening 42 in which a pin 43is mounted in any suitable manner such as by peening the end portions of the pin 43. It will be seen, therefore, that in this form of construction the jaw 14 is pivotally mounted on the pin 43 and securely held to the neck portion 35 so that the bolt 15 and nut 16 may be removed, and the jaw 14 will remain attached to the other portions of the device.
From the foregoing description of my invention it is manifest that I have provided an improved battery. terminal which will not become corroded to a battery pole and which, while effectively serving itsother objects pointed out hereinbefore and being simple in construction and economical in may be expeditiously installed operative position on the pole of abattferv and easily and quickly removed there- It is likewise apparent from the foregoing description of my invention that I have prov ded an mproved connectionfor the of the battery cable since the ear port1ons39 and 40 when'bent down effect a gripping action on the cable while these ear portions may be quickly engaged and disengaged from contact with the cable by means of a suitable tool such as a pair of pliers.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification,without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the class described, means providing a stationary jaw member including an arcuated portion having a concave recess provided in the inner side thereof, said jaw member including an inwardly extending shoulder provided at the outer end of said recess, said means. including aneck portion extending angular ly from said jaw member at the end thereof opposite said shoulder, and including means providing a contact element disposed inwardly of said neck portion, a second jaw member including a bifurcated end portion providingarms movably mounted on said neck portion, said last named jaw member including an arcuated portion having 7, a concave recess provided therein at the inner side thereof and including a shoulder adapted to be aligned with said first named shoulder, and means for moving said aw member whereby to bring said shoulders into abutting engagement to clamp a member disposed in said recesses. extending shoulder :provided at the outer end of said recess, said meansincluding a neck portion extending angularly from said member at the end thereof opposite said shoulder, and including means provid-' ing a contact element disposed inwardly of said neck portion, a second jaw member including a bifurcated end portion providing arms movably mounted'on said neck portion, said last named aw member including an arcuated portion having a concave recess provided therein at the inner side thereof and including" a ;shoulder adapted to bealigned with said first named shoulder, said j aw members including head portions disposed, outwardly of said shoulders, said head portions haying aligned openings provided therein, and means extended through said openings for moving said jaw members whereby to bring saidshoulders into abutting engagement to clamp a member disposed in said recesses.
3. In a device of the class described, means providing a stationary jaw member including an arcuated portion having a concave recess provided in the inner side thereof, said aw member including an inwardly extending shoulder provided at the outer end of said recess, said. means including a 10 neck portion extending angularly from said jaw member at the end thereof opposite said shoulder, and including means providing a contact element disposed inwardly of said neck portion, said last named means including an annular flange integral with said neck portion at the end thereof opposite said jaw member and including a substantially U-shaped member formed integral with and outwardly of said flange, said U-shaped portion including upstanding ear portions adapted to be bent into contacting engagement with a conducting element disposed in said U-shaped member with the end thereof adapted to abut said flange, a second jaw member including a bifurcated end portion providing arms movably mounted on said neck portion, said last named jaw member including an arcuated portion having a concave recess provided therein at the inner side thereof and including a shoulder adapted to be aligned with said first named shoulder, said jaw members including head portions disposed outwardly of said shoulders, said head portions having aligned openings pro vided therein, and means extended through said openings for moving said jaw members whereby to bring said shoulders into abut ting engagement to clamp a member disposed in said recesses.
4. In a device of the class described, means providing a stationary jaw member and a contact element and including a neck portion disposed between said element and said jaw member, a second jaw member includ- 4 ing a bifurcated end portion providing arms pivotally mounted on said neck portion, means for pivotally mounting said last named jaw member on said neck portion, said last named means including a boss on said neck portion having an opening pro vided therein, said arms having aligned openings formed therein, and including a member extended through the said opening in said boss and said last named openings, and means for moving said second named jaw member with respect to said first named jaw member whereby to clamp a member disposed therebetween.
