EVAPORATORS FOR SUGAR.
9 I I f 0 NIETERS, PHOTO-LITHGRAPNER, WASHINGTON, D C,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY RAMEY, OF LOUISVILLE, KEI TTUOKY.
IMPROVEMENT IN EVAPORATORS FOR SUGAR.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 181,592, dated August 29, 1876; application filed February 1, 1876.
herein described.
In the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, I have shown the entire apparatus.
Figure 1 is a plan view. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a transverse section. Fig. 4 is a section showing the arrangement of pipes for drawing oil the liquid sirup, and delivering it into the evaporator-pan.
The same letters are employed in all the figures in the indication of the same parts.
A and B are the receiving-pans, into which thejuice of the cane is delivered to be boiled. In boiling, the scum rising to the top will flow over the side walls and into the trough O, which carries it away. Some good sirup will,
however, flow over with the scum, and when it cools in the trough 0 it will flow oft under the lighter part of the scum made up of the impurities. To save this, perforations in the bottom of the trough are made at D, near to the opening E, through which the scum flows off, and is wasted. These perforations open into a pipe, F, by which the heavy liquid sirup flowing through the perforations will be conducted into the first compartment G of the evaporator, and there mingled with the other sirup supplied directly through the gates.
WVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with the receiving-pans A B, the trough O, surrounding the exterior sides ot' the receiving-pans, to catch the scum boiling over the edges of the pans, and having a discharge-opening, E, for the outflow of the scum, the perforations D, and pipe F, for drawing of liquid sirup passing over with the scum, and discharging the same into the evaporator-pan G, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HENRY RAMEY; Witnesses:
GRAHAM MOORE,
Tnos. J. OREND RF.
