The invention relates to machines for tei;- turing the upper and side faces of a moving clay column, preferably as it issues from a brick machine, as in the manufacture of face brick when it is desired to produce face brick having a rough wavy texture for their outer surfaces; and this application is a continuation of the common subject matter vof our prior application forpatent for Clay texturing` machines, filed/December 2, 1927, Serial The objects of the improvements include the provision of a compact, eflcient machine adapted to be driven by a single electric motor, and including means capableof providing the desired texture on the moving clay column by displacing and removing clayY at the top and side surfaces of the column, the machine being also provided with means for clearing away from the clay `column and the moving parts of the machine the clay particles thus removed, and the machine being provided also with improvedmeans fgrcleaning .the texturing means. - These and ancillary objects are attained a construction and arrangement hereinafter' set forth in detail, and which may be stated in general terms as including rotary cutters preferably of thevlawn mower type, arranged to rotate against thetop and sides of the clay column as it issues from the end of the brick machine, each 'cutter axis beingangled transversely across the longitudinal axis of the moving clay column, a driving connec- 1 tion between each of the cutters and a single drive Shaft, and means driven by the sam@ drive shaft for clearing away the cla-y particles removed from the clay vcolumn by the cutters, together with means for cleaning the cut-ter blades adjacent the column.

The improved clay teXturing machine indicated generally at 10, includes a base chan,- nel 11 arranged to extend transversely beneath the moving column 12 being delivered from the end 13 of a brick machine or the like, not shown. Y A
v A frames 14 and 14 are provided for supporting the base channel 11 at a suitable distance above the floor 15,. A motor 16 depends from one end of the base channel 11 and the motor shaft 17 has secured thereon a drive pinion 18 which is meshed withV a driven gea-r 19 secured at one end 20 of a main shaft 21 extending preferably parallel with the base channel 11 and supported for rotation as by means ofspaced bearing brackets 22 and 22 depending from the base channel 11.
Intermediate l the brackets 22 and 22", spaced worm wheels 23 and 235cm secured upon the shaft 21. The worm wheel 23 is meshed with a worm 24 ,Carried at the lower end of an angled cutter shaft 25 journaled in a suitable bearing block 26 mounted on the base channel 11 at one side of the clay column 12 4anda rotary cutter 27, preferably of the lawn mower type, issecured at the outer upper end of the shaft 25.
Similarly, the worm wheel 23 is geared with Worin 24 Carried at the lower end 0f an angled cutter shaft 25 journaled in a suitable bearing block 26 mounted on the base channel 11 at the other side of the clay column 12; and a rotary cutter 27 preferably of the lawn mower type, is secured at the outer upper end of the shaft 25.
Preferably at the outer side of the bearing bracket 22, a bevel gear 2S is secured upon the shaft 21 and is ineshed with a bevel gear 29 secured at the lower end of a vertically extending shaft 30 journaled in a suitable bearing block 31 mounted on the base channel 11.
The upper end of the shaft 30 has secured thereon a bevel gear 32 meshed with a bevel gear 33 secured on an upper cutter shaft 34 horizontally and angularly extending over the upper surface of the moving clay column 12. The end of the shaft 34 adjacent the gear 33 is suitably journaled in a bearing 35, preferably mounted at the upper end of an angular bracket 36 supported on the upper end of the bearing blo-ck 31` and the other end of the shaft 4 is suitably journaled in a bearing 37 carried at the upper end 0f a strut 38 suitably supported as by means of a channel 39 carried on the base channel 11.
The upper cutter shaft 34 has secured 'thereon over the clay column, a rotary cutter 27. preferably of the lawn mower type.
The shaft 21 preferably extends beyond the gear 28 and has secured thereon between the gear 2S and the A frame 14, a worm 40 which is meshed with a worm wheel 41 secured upon a worm wheel shaft 42 preferably extending parallel with the clay column and journaled in suitable bearings supported from the channel 11.
The shaft 21 and the gears associated therewith below the base channel 11 are preferably enclosed in a case 43 adapted for retaining a suitable lubricant; and the shaft 42 extends outside the case 43 and carries upon its outer end a crank disk 44 which has a crank pin 45 mounted thereon.
The crank pin 45 extends outwardly through a slot 46 at the lower end of a vertically extending lever 47 oscillatably mounted intermediate its ends upon a laterally extending pivot pin 46 secured on a supporting bracket 49 upwardly extending from the base channel 11.
rlhe upper end of the lever 47 is pivotally connected as at 50 with one end of a connecting rod 51 the other end of which is pivotally connected as at 52 with one clearing crank arm 53 of a bell crank 54.
The bell crank is oscillatably mounted upon a vertically extending pivot pin 55 suitably supported from the base channel 11, and the outer end of the other crank arm 56 of the bell crank 54 is slot and pivot connected as at 57 with one end of a connecting link 5S. the other end of which is pivotally connected as at 59 with a depending clearing armv 60 oscillatably mounted at its upper end as by a horizontally extending pin 61 upon a support 62 extending upwardly from the base channel 11.
The bell crank clearing arm 53 is preferably in the form of an enlarged blade for lateral oscillating across the top of a shield 63 through which the clay column moves ]ust after being subject to the action of the angled cutters; and a laterally extending clearing blade 64 is carried at the lower end of the clearing arm for swinging to and fro across the base channel 11.
A longitudinally extending slide bed 65 is provided below the rotary cutter 27 and between the cutters 27 and 27 for the moving clay column 12 to slide over as it issues from the end 13 of the brick machine.
A hood 66 is preferably provided over the cutters for preventing pieces of clay dislodged thereby, from flying about objectionabl t.

Means for cleaning the several cutters are provided, and preferably include angularly arranged plates 70, 70', and 70, which are adjustably secured, respectively, as by means of cap screws 71, upon suitable extensions 7 2, 72, and 72, respectively, of the sides and top of the shield 63, the extensions being bent towards the moving column so that the several adjacent edges of the plates 70, 70', and 70 may be adjustably maintained very close to the surfaces of the advancing column, and in such position that the blades of the several cutters 27, 27', and 27 will shear over and be cleaned by the upper surfaces of the plates 70, 70', and 70, at the edges thereof, respec tively, whereby, if the blades of the cutters have picked up any particles of clay in operating against the moving clay column, such particles will be removed from the blades by the aforesaid cleaning plates, and the cutter blades will all cut freely into the surfaces of the advancing column.
All of the cutters and both of the clearing arms are actuated through the aforesaid mechanism by the motor 16, whereby the angled rotary cutters, rotating preferably in a direction opposite to the movement of the clay column 12, will roughen the surfaces thereof by bodily removing particles of clay therefrom, whereby bricks may be made as illustrated in F ig. 1 having the desired rough wavy texture for their outer' surfaces.

3. A machine for texturing surfaces of a moving clay column and the like, including a cutter adapted to operate against a surface of the moving column for removing particles of clay therefrom, a shield surrounding the column immediately adjacent the cutter for protecting the cut surfaces thereof and for receiving clay particles displaced therefrom, and means for clearing the cuttings from the top of the shield.
4. A machine for teXturing surfaces of a moving clay column and the like, including a cutter adapted to operate against a surface of the moving column for removing particles y of clay therefrom, and oscillating arm means for clearing away the clay particles removed from the clay column by the cutter.
5. A machine for teXturing surfaces of a moving clay column and the like, including a rotary lawn mower cutter adapted to operate against a surface of the moving column for removing particles of clay therefrom, and oscillating arm means for clearing away the clay particles removed from the clay column by the cutter.
6. A machine for teXturing surfaces of a moving clay column and the like, including a cutter adapted to operate against a surface of the moving column for removing particles of clay therefrommneans for clearing away the clay particles removed from the clay column by the cutter, and means for cleaning the cutter.
7. A machine for texturing surfaces of a moving clay column and the like, including a rotary lawn mower cutter adapted to operate against a surface of the moving column for removing particles of clay therefrom, means for clearing away the clay particles removed from the clay column by the cutter, and means for cleaning the cutter.
8. A machine for texturing surfaces of a moving clay column and the like, including a cutter adapted to operate against a surface of the moving column for removing particles of clay therefrom, a shield surrounding the column immediately adjacent the cutter for protecting the cut surface thereof and for receiving clay particles displaced therefrom, means for cleaning the cutter, and means for from the clay column by the cutter.
