IMPROVEMENT IN WEATHER-STRIPS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 18 [,195, dated August 15, 1876; application filed June 15, 1876;

To all whom it may concern: 1

Be it known that I, J. H. MGINTIRE, 0f Orestline, in the county of Crawford and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Weather-Strips; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawin gs, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification and in which Figure 1 is a front view of my improved weather-strip in position for use upon a door. Fig. 2 is a vertical section Fig. 3, an inverted view; Fig. 4 a detached sectional view thereof; and Fig. 5 is a similar view of the same.

Corresponding parts in the several figures are designated by like letters.

This invention relates to a certain new and useful improvement in weather-strips; audit consists of a plate or strip having an axis fixed thereto and provided with a spring, the said plate being hung in a groove or concavity in the lower edge of the door, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth.

In the annexed drawing, A refers to a plate or strip, at the upper end and to one side of which is affixed an axis or rod, (1, to permit of the said plate being hung out of a line with its said axis a, by which the spring or springs a a may be also applied thereto, and the pressure thereof exerted upon one side of the plate to hold its free end against the door to cause it to ride clear of the door-sill. The springs a a/ are coiled around the axis or rod a, to one side of the plate or strip A, as seen in Fig. 3, by which, as above intimated,

the pressure thereof is brought upon the said plate for the purpose, in addition to that above mentioned, of-holdingthe plate down closely against its stop and in contact with the doorsill, when the door is closed to exclude rain, &c. The fastened ends of the springs a a are secured to the plate A; their free ends press or bear against the door. The lower edge of the door is provided with a longitudinal groove or concavity, c, to receive and permit of the strip or plate A being hung therein, to dispense with a shield or overhang ing guard, as is commonly practiced, to protect its hinge, &c., from extraneous matter or particles.

In the lower right-hand corner of the doorframe B is suitably fastened a stop or stud, b,

which, as the door closes, depresses the strip or plate A, forcing it down upon the sill, and closing the opening or space under the door, or between it and the sill. accomplishing the end sought and above named.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-

The plate or strip A, having affixed thereto an axis or rod, a, around which is placed a spring, in combination with, and hung in, a groove or concavity, c, in the lower edge of the door, and the stud or stop I), constructed and arranged to operate as described, and for the purpose set forth.
