The present invention relates to selecting and printing mechanisms, and more particularly the invention relates to printing telegraph mechanisms. The present application is a continuation in part of application Serial No. 726,859, filed July 18, 1921.
A primary object of the invention is to provide novel single magnet selector mechanisms in which point selection and a maximum margin of operation of the mechanism is secured.
Another object of the invention is to provide a. novel simplified selecting mechanism for type wheel printers, especially adapted for use as a stock ticker and adaptable for high speed operation.

fiferring to Figure 1, the mechanism is controlled by a single selector magnet which may be of any Well known construction.
' As shown, the selector magnetis of a sensitive polarized type especially designed for use in stock ticker operation, and comprises a permanent U-shaped magnet 1 to one poleof which the laminated soft iron core 2 1s secured. Disposed on core 2 are the magnet windings 3. Pivotally supported from the other pole of the permanent magnet 1 by means o'f pin 4 is the oscillating armature 5, the motion of which is limited by means of p the adjustable stop screws 6. Riveted to the parts removed armature 5 is the bifurcated actuating extension 7, the bifurcated end ofv which fits into annular channel 8 of the selector cam shaft extension 9. The cam shaft extension 9 is formed integrally with the shaft 10 and r is slidably journaled ina stationary bearing 11 which is supported from aframe work (not shown) in any suitable manner. Formed integrally with the opposite end of cam shaft 10 is a bearing extension 12 which fits slidably into a suitable. recess or bore formed in the end of the shaftsection 13. Drive shaft section 13 is journaled for rotation in fixed bearing let and rigidly secured thereto and driven thereby is trip cam 15 which is provided; with a driving extension 16, Driving extension 16 projects into a suitable slot formed in cam shaft drive member 18 which is pivotally secured to cam shaft 10 by means of securing pin 19. Secured to and driving the'shaft section 13 is a friction or slip clutch 2,0 which may be of any suitable construction and which is'driven by shaft section 21. Shaft section 21 is journaled in fixed bearing 22 supported from the framework and is driven by spiral gear 23 mounted thereon. Gear 23 meshes with and is driven by a spiral pinion 24 which is mounted on the shaft 25. Shaft 25 in operation is continuously rotated ata predetermined and constant speed by an electric motor or in any other suitable manner.
Secured in camshaft 10 is a stop pin 26 which in the position of parts shown in Figure 1, engages a stationary stop projection 27, suitably supported from the frame work of the mechanism. Spaced spirally around shaft 10 and rigidly secured thereto are the selecting cams or pins 28 to 33 (Figures 1 and 3) In the position of parts shown in Figure 1, as cam shaft 10 rotates cams 28 to 33 will successively engage the inclined ends 34 of point selection levers 35 which are pivotally mounted on the sta'tionary supporting rod 36, depressing the forward ends .of the levers against the tension of helical springs 38. spring 38 is provided for each lever 35, the
framework. Springs 38 normally hold the extensions of levers 35 in engagement with stationary stop bar 39 carried by the framework. With the selector magnet energized to tilt armature 5 in the opposite direction about the pivot 4, cams 28 to 33 will be shifted to pass between levers 35 as the cam shaft rotates, and will engage and'ride over cam surfaces 40 of selector setting arms 41. Arms 41 are also pivotally supported from stationary rod 36 and are spaced from the levers 35 by suitable spacing collars. Formed on each arm 41 is a latching extension 42 adapted to hook under latching shoulder 43 of latch members 44 individual thereto when arms 41 are depressed. Latches 44 are pivotally supported from the frame of the mechanism by pins 45 (Figure 3) and are provided with the actuating extensions 46 positioned in alignment with levers 35 and adapted to be actuated by cam pins 28 to 33, as will more fully hereinafter appear. Disposed between extensions;47 of latch members 44 and extensions 48 of the selector arms 41 are the helical springs 49 which normally urge the latches 44 counter-clockwise and the selector arms clockwise in Figure 3.
Arms 41 are guided for movement in slots formed in comb member 50 supported from the frame. At their forward ends arms 41' are slotted to slidably receive the ends of the actuatin extensions 51 of selector disk setting for 52. Forks 52 are pivotally supported from supporting rod 53 and are each provided with a pair of cam supporting tines 54 and 55. Times 54 extend upward and have formed at their outer ends cam surfaces 56 which are adapted to engage the shifting cam projections 57 of permutation or selector disks 58 to 62 when the tines are raised, while tines 55 extend downward and have formed at their outer ends cam surfaces 63 engaged by cam projections 64 of the disks 58 to 62, as will more fully hereinafter appear.
Selector disks 58 to 62 are provided with the central spacing and supporting bosses 63 provided with central openings by means of which the disks are slidably mounted on the s uare sleeve 64 mounted on a square section 0 the type wheel shaft 65. Formed in the periphery of the disks 58 to 62 are V-shaped selector notches 66. N otches 66 are variably spaced ondisks 58 to 62 in a manner and for a purpose that will more fully hereinafter appear. Seeker member 67, provided with a pair of spaced feelers 68 and 69 individual to each selector disk 58 to 62, is pivotally supported from the frame work by pin or rod 0. In marln'ng position of disks 58 to 62 on shaft 65 feelers 68 individual thereto will be in engagement with the eriphery thereof, and in spacing position of the disks feelers 69 individual thereto will engage the periphe thereof.
ormed integrally with the seeker 67 is an extension 71' provided with cars 72 to which the upper ends of printing hammer latches 73 and 74 are pivotally secured by means of screws 75. Formed integrally on latches 73 and 74 are projections 76 and 77 respectively which in operation are adapted to engage the ends of tines 78 and 79 of hammer control fork 80 pivotally supported on pin 53. Fork 80 is provided with an actuating extension 81 which fits into a slot formed in the end of the selector arm 41 controlled by cam pin 33 of cam shaft 10. Coil spring 82 wound around seeker supporting pin with the ends thereof in engagement with the seeker and a pin 83 suitably secured to the frame urges seeker 71 together with the parts carried thereby in a clock-wise direction in Figure 2 about the pivot pin 70 forcing feelers 68 and 69 into engagement with 'disks 58 to 62. Helical springs 83 secured at one end to the lower ends of latches 73 and 74 respectively and at their other ends to the frame work, force latches 73 and 74 counterclockwise about their pivots and hold latching shoulders 84 thereof in engagement with the free ends of a pair of printing hammer arms 85. Hammer arms 85 are pivotally mounted on stationary rod 86 and are urged in a clockwise direction in Figure 2 by heli cal springs 87. A pair of adjustable stop screws 88 supported from the frame of the mechanism limit the movement of arms 85.

Secured to and rotatable with type wheel shaft 65 is a spacing and hammer restoring cam 96 (Figures 1 and 2) provided with an actuating notch 97 in its periphery. A cam roller 98 carried on the end of arm 99 of a restoring and spacing bell crank member 100 normally rides against the periphery of the cam 96. Member 100 ispivotally mounted on a spindle or shaft 101 and is positioned between the printing hammers 85. Secured to the arm. 102 of the member ,100 is a restor ing pin 103 which is adapted to engage restoring extensions 104 of printing hammers 85, as will more-fully hereinafter appear. Pivotally supported from arm 106 of member 100 by means of pin 107 is a spacing pawl 108. A spring 109 secured at one end to the frame of the mechanismby means of pin 110.
engagement with spacing ratchet wheel 112 and at the same time forces the member 100 counter-clockwise about its pivot, holding actuating roller 98 in engagement with the periphery of cam 96. Ratchet 112 is rigidly secured to and drives a spacing roller 113 which is rotatably supported on the spindle 101. Tape 90 passes over the roller 113 and is held in engagement therewith by roller 114 which is rotatably supported on the up per end of arm 115.- 'Arm 115 is pivotally supported from the framework by pin 116, and is urged by spring 117 into engagement with tape 90 pressing the tape against roller 113.
Type wheel shaft is supported from the framework in bearings 118 and slidably keyed thereto is toothed drive clutch member 119. Clutch member 119 is provided with a cam surface 120 and stop projection 121 adapted to engage the end of stop arm 122 of trip member 123 which is pivotally mounted on the rod 53. Spring 123 secured at one end to the trip member 123 and at its other end to the framework, normally urges arm 122 downward, holding it in engagement with the clutch member 119, and urges trip arm 124 of member 123 upward so that its end is positioned in the path of trip cam 15. Helical spring 125 interposed between a shoulder. on the shaft 65 and the end of the clutch member 119, normally urges the clutch member towards cooperating toothed clutch member 126 so that when arm 122 is raised the clutch members will be forced into engagement. Clutch member 126 is formed integrally with a spiral gear 127 which is journaled. on the end of shaft 65 and meshes with and is driven by spiral pinion 24. v
Operation Inpoperation, shaft 25 and pinion 24 rotate continuously, driving gears 23 and 127 continuously in opposite directions. When no signals are being received, the position of parts will be as shown in Figure 1, with the stop pin 26 of cam shaft 10 engaging the fixed stop 27 and clutch member 119 held out of engagement with the clutch member 126 by the stop arm 122, and shafts 10 and 65 will be at rest. The signals to which the mechanism is responsive each qomprise a start condition, a code combination of selecting conditions and a stop condition. A stop condition is normally on the line holding the parts in the position shown in Figure 1. Core 2 and armature 5 of the selector magnet are magnetized by permanent mag-- net 1. When a start condition is received the polarity of the current flowing through windings 3 is reversed, decreasing the magwill accordingly be seen that a sensitive selector magnet in which springs are eliminat ed especially adapted for stock ticker work is provided; Tilting of armature 5in response to the start condition shifts cam shaft 10 endwise so that stop pin 26 will be disengaged from the stop shelf 27. As soon as pin 26 is free from the shelf 27 friction clutch 20 will become effective to drive cam shaft 10 at a speed which-is definitely timed with relation to the incoming impulses. lVith the arrangement shown, the first impulse of the signal following the start impulse is received just before pin 28 passes the extension 46 of the latch 44 controlled thereby. If this impulse is a spacing impulse, armature 5 will be actuated to position the cam pin-28 to engage the extension 46 of'the latch individual thereto, rocking the latch about its pivot 45 in a clockwise direction in Figure 3. If EGlECtOI arm 41 individual to pin 28 had been latched downward in the preceding selection, actuation of latch- 44 individual thereto will free the depressed arm which will move to its upper position under the influence of spring 49 individual thereto. If selector arm 41 individual topin 28 had not been depressed on the preceding selection by the cam pin 28, then actuation of the latch 44 will produce no eflect on its position and the arm will remain in its upper or unactuated position. Immediately after the cam pin 28 actuates latch 44, pin 28 will pass alongside projection-40 of the selector arm 41 individual to the pin28 and will ride overcam surface 34 of the point selection lever 35 controlled thereby, depressing the lever. Untilxthe pin 28 has passed the projection 40 of the selector arm 41 'in dividual thereto, cam shaft 10 will be prepin 28 will pass alongside cam projection 34 of arm 35 individual thereto and the posi tion of shaft 10 cannot be changed by'the selector magnet until the selector arm 41 has been completely depressedv and pin 28 has passed the projection of the arm 35. When the selector arm 41 is depressed, spring 49 will force the shoulder 43 of the latch 44 individual thereto over thelocking projection 42 of the arm, locking the arm in its lower or selected position. In similar manner the cam pins 29 to 33 will be positioned in alignment with the projections 46 of the latches 44, and the surfaces 34 of the levers 35, or
- until the setting operation has been completed. The locking of the cam shaft is an important feature of my invention and is applicable to any selector mechanism embodying an axially movable rotary cam shaft for setting the selector members. For example, by adding the-levers 35 between selecting fingers shown in copending application S. N. 7 04,022, the locking action of the cam shaft during setting operation may be secured.
After the selecting last impulse has been received and the setting of the selector members. controlled by the pins 33 has been initiated, a stop conditionis placed on the line and a projection on trip cam 15 rocks the arm 124 of the trip control member 123 downward causing arm 122 to be raised upward and out of engagement with cam surface 120 and stop projection 121 of the clutch member 119. This frees the clutch member "1'19 for movement under influence of spring 125, into engagement with clutch member 126 and a driving connection is established between gear 127 and type wheel shaft starting shaft 65 together with the parts carried thereby into rotation in a clockwise direction in Figures 2 and 3. v t
The setting of selector arms 41 in-their upper or lower positions in accordance with the received code combinations shifts theselecting forks 52 and 80 positioning setting cams 56 or 63 as the case maybe, in the path of rotation of the cam projections 57 and 64 respectively of the selector disks 58 to 62, and the tines 78 and 79 in front of projection 76 or 77 of latches 7 3or 74. As disks 58 to 62 rotate with the shaft 65, cam projections 56 or 63 will engage and ride over cams 57 or 64 depending upon whether the control forks 52 individual thereto are in lowered or raised position. As projections 57 and 64 ride over cams 56 and 63, disks 58 to 62 are shifted axially ,on shaft 65 into alignment with one -or the other of the spaced seekers 69 or 68 of seeker 67 individual thereto. The setting of disks 58 to 62 axially on shaft 65 occurs simultaneously at the beginningof the revolution of shaft 65 and during the reception of .the stop condition following the selecting conditions of the received signal. The stop condition tilts armature 5 of the selector magnet to the position shown in Figure 1, stop pin 26 engages stop shelf 27 and shaft 10 is &
brought to rest, completing its 0 cle of operation, and a succeeding code com ination may be received and set up successively on selector arms 41.
After the disks 58 to 62 have been shifted axially in accordance with the received code combinations, continued rotation of shaft 65 will bring a notch 66 beneath each of the feelers 68 and 69 in engagement with the disks, permitting the seeker 71 to rotate clockwise in Figure '2, under the influence of spring 82. With hammer ,control fork 80 in the full line position shown in Figure 2, as seeker 71 moves inward, projection 77 of latch 74 will engage the end of tine 79 of fork 80 and the lower end of latch 74 will shift outward against the tension of its spring 83 disengaging the shoulder 84 from the ends of the inner printing hammer controlled thereby. This movement of latch 74 releases the inner hammer 85 for a printing stroke under the influence of its spring 87 and a selected letter will be printed. When fork 80 is set in its upper position as indicated by the dotted lines in Figure 2, projection 76 of the printer control arm 73 will engage the end of tine 78 of fork 80 and the outer printing hammer85 will be released for a printing stroke under the influence of its spring 87 to print a figure. It will be understood that notches 66 in selector disks 58 to 62 are arranged so that for each combination of positions or setting of the disks a different pair of characters on the type wheel will be positioned over the hammer sections 89 of printingrhamm ers so that for each different setting of the disks 58 to 62 a different pair of characters will be in the printing position, only one of the hammer arms 85 being released to print. a letter or figure, depending upon the position of the fork 80. released printing hammer engages the end of its stop screw 88 with a blowjust before the hammer section 89 impacts the tape 90 against the selected character, and :the remainder of a printing stroke of the hammer printing hammer, continued rotation of the disks 58 and 62 will cam "the feeler 71 outward, and just before the completion of a revolution of shaft 65, roller 98 of printing hammer restoring member 100 will drop into notch 97 of cam 96 rocking the i 103 and advancing oscillating spacing pawl 108 over one tooth of ratchet 112. Pin 103 engages projection 104 of the release printing hammer, restoringthe hammer counter- The parts are so adjusted that the i restoring pinclockwise about the pivot 86 until shoulder come to rest with the stopprojection 121 of,
clutch member 119engag1ng the end of' stop arm 122 as shown in Figure 1, completing the printing cycle. Immediately after the printing operation, selector arm 41 controlling hammer control fork 80 may be reset in accordance with the lastselecting impulse of the succeeding code combination and as soon as shaft 65 comes to rest at the end of a complete revolution it may again be immediately tripped to transfer the succeeding selection to the disks 58 to 62. In this way a complete overlap in the setting of the selectors and the cycle of printing operations may be secured. I
It will be apparent to those skilled in the art that insteaclof shifting selector members axially, selector members 41 may be utilized to rotate notched permutation disks slightly to selectively align notches or holes containal therein. or may be utilized to selectively shift notched permutation bars in well known types of selecting mechanisms. Also instead of providing a pair of printin hammers to print the characters in the di erent cases, a w
single printing hammer with a shift mechanism may be provided. Other variations of my invention and uses for the subcomblnations of mechanisms described will be apparent to those skilled in the art and'may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention. Accordingly, what is desired to be secured by Letters Patent and claimed as new is:
1. In a printing telegraph receiver, a. selector device operatively responsive to received line current impulses and means following each operation of said selector device in response to a line current impulse for rendering it unresponsive to further impulses for a predetermined interval.
2. In a printing telegraph receiver, a selector device operatively responsive to received line current impulses and means following the beginning of each operation of said device for locking said device to complete its operation.
3. In a printing telegraph receiver, a selector device, means for moving said selector device to either of two positionsin response to received line current impulses and means operative following the start of each operation of said device for locking it in its assumed position for a predetermined length of time. 1 I
4. In a printing telegraph receiver, a plurality of cam members, a selector member and latch member individual to each of said cam members, means whereby said cam members operate said selector members in response to received impulses, said selector members being arranged to lock said cam members from further operation responsive to a succeeding impulse.

Ina printing telegraph receiver, a plurality of selector members, a plurality of latch members individual to said selector members, a rotating shaft comprising a lurality of cam members, said cam mem ers being arranged to be sequentially positioned opposite their individual selectors and latch members, means responsive to received impulses foroperating said shaft longitudinally whereby said cam members operate said selectors or said latch members in accordance with the impulses, and a plurality of point selectors individual to said latch selector members positioned to latch each of said cam members following its operation on the associated selector member against operation in response to received impulses.

In a receiver device, a plurality of selector bars, a plurality of setting forks individual to said selector bars, a plurality of notched diskmembcrs, each of said disk members being provided with cam members, a rotating shaft for supporting said disk members, means responsive to received impulses for selectively operating said selector bars, said selector bars being provided with extensions which co-act with their associated setting forks, whereby said forks are selectively operated in accordance with movement of said selector bars, said setting forks being arranged to engage the cams of their associated selector disks as said disks rotate for selectively moving said disks longitudinally along said rotating shaft in accordance with the positioning of said selector bars, a type wheel comprising a plurality of type characters, a plurality of seeker members, a printing hammer normally locked against operation, means whereby said seeker members are selected for operation in accordance with the positioning of said disk members, means whereby said seeker members are operated when said shaft has assumed a predetermined position, and means controlled by said seeker for releasing said locked hammer whereby said printing hammer is released for operation.
35. In a receiver, a type wheel comprising a plurality of rows of type characters, a plurality of type hammers one for each of said rows, said hammers bein'g normally urged toward said characters, latching devices individual to each of said hammers for normally latching said hammer, means for selectively positioning said type characters before said hammers and for operating one of said latching members whereby a predetermined one of said hammers is released to print a type character, said means comprising a plurality of selectors, a shaft for supporting said type wheel and said selectors,'and means for moving said selectors transversely with respect to said shaft for selecting one of said characters for operation.
36. In a receiver, a type wheel compris ing a plurality of groups of type characters, a printing hammer individual to each of said groups, a plurality of notched selector disks, a shaft for supporting said type wheel and said disks, means for'selectively operating said disks for selecting one ofsaid type characters for operation, and means responsive to the positioning of said disks for selecting one of said printing; hammers whereby a predeter mined character is printed.

In a printing telegraph receiver, arotating shaft comprising a plurality of cam members spaced about the periphery of said shaft, means for rotating said shaft for successively bringing said cam members into operative positions, means responsive to line current impulses for operating said shaft as each of said members is brought into said operative position, means for rendering said shaft unresponsive to line current impulses while said cam members are positioned intermediate said operative position, a plurality of notched,
disks, a type wheel, means controlled by said cam members for moving said notched disks longitudinally with respect to said shaft, a latched printing hammer and means operative in accordance with the positioning of said latched disks for releasing said printing hammer for operation against a predetermined one of said type characters.

In a printing telegraph receiver, selector members, a shaft comprising a plurality of cam members, one for each of said cam members, means whereby said cam members are successively brought into engagement with their individual selector members, means responsive to line current impulses for successively operating said cam members as they engage their individual selector members whereby said selector members are positioned in response to received impulses, means 'oper ative following each operation for locking each of said cam members to complete its operation, a pluralityof notched disks, a type wheel, a shaft for supporting said disks and said type wheel, means responsive to said selectors for moving said notched disks longitudinally with respect to said shaft in accordance with the operation of said selectors, a latched printing hammer and means operative in accordance with the positioning of said latched disks for releasing said printing hammer for operation against a predetermined one of said type characters.

In a printing telegraph receiver, a plurality of selector members, a plurality of latch members, a rotating shaft, said shaft being movable longitudinally in response to received impulses, a plurality of cam members integral with said'shaft on its periphery for selectively operating. said selector members or said latch members in accordance with its longitudinal position, a plurality of notched disks, a type wheel, a shaft for supporting said disks and said type wheel, means responsive to. saidselectors for moving said notched disks longitudinally with respect to said shaft in accordance with the operation of said selectors, a latched printing hammer and means operative in accordance with the positioning of said latched disks for releasing said printing hammer for operation against a predetermined one of said type characters.

In a printing telegraph receiver, a plurality of operating members, a plurality of selector and latch members individual to each of said operating members, means responsive to the received impulses whereby each of said cam members operatesv its individual selec tor, means including selector levers individual to said cam members whereby said latchmembers are locked from further operation following each operation, a plurality of notched disks, a type wheel, a shaft for supporting said disks and said type wheel, means responsive to said selectors for moving said notched disks longitudinally with respect to said shaft in accordance with the operation of said selectors, a latched printing hammer and means point selectors individual to said selector members and positioned, adjacent thereto, a

In a printing telegraph receiver, a first shaft, a second shaft, a common source of energy for rotating said shafts, said shafts normally being latched against rotation, means responsive to line current impulses for unlatching said first shaft, saidmeans also operating said first shaft selectively in responseto received impulses, selector disks carried by said second shaft, means following a complete rotation of said first shaft for unlatching said second shaft for rotation and selector members selectively controlled by the movement of said first shaft in re-- sponse to received impulses for selectively positioning said selector disks.

In a printing telegraph receiver, a first shaft, a second shaft, said shafts being normally latched against rotation, a common rotating means for said shafts, means responsive to a received impulse for unlatching said first shaft, and for selectively moving said shaft longitudinally as it rotates in response to received impulses, selector members latched in predetermined positions in accordance with the longitudinal movement of said shaft, means following the rotation of said shaft for unlatching said second shaft, a plurality of selector disks carried by said second shaft, each of said disks being individual to one of said selectormembers and means operative as said secondshaft rotates for simultaneously positioning said selector disks in accordance with the operation of said selector bars.

In a printing telegraph receiver, a first shaft, a second shaft, said shafts being normally latched against rotation, a common rotating means for said shafts, means responsive to a received impulse for unlatching said first shaft, and for selectively movingsaid shaft longitudinally as it rotates in response to received impulses, selector members latched in predetermined positions in accordance with the longitudinal movement of said operative as said second shaft rotates for simultaneously positioning said selector disks in accordance with the operation of said selector bars, a type wheel carried by said second shaft and means for selectively print- .ing a predetermined one of said type characters in accordance with the selected positioning of said'selector disks.

In a printing telegraph receiver, a plurality' of first selectors,'means for variably operating said selectors in accordance with received code combinations of impulse conditions, a second .set of selectors, means for operating said second selectors in accordance with the operation of said first selectors, a plurality of type characters in normal. and shift positions, meanscontrolled by said second selectors for selecting a typecharacter in normal and shift position, an additional, selector associated with said'first selectors and variably operated by said first mentioned means in accordance with an impulse condition following "said code combination and means directly controlled by said additional selector for 1 selecting between the selected characters in normal and shift position.

In a rinting telegraph receiver, a plurality .of rst selectors, means for variably operating said selectors in accordance with received code combinations of impulse conditions, a second set of selectors, means for op: erating said second selectors in accordance with the operation of said first selectors, aplurality of type characters in normal and shift position, means controlled by said second selectors for selecting type characters in normal and shift position, an additional selector associated with said first selectors and variably operated in accordance with an impulse condition following said code combination and means directly controlled by said additional selector for selecting between the selected characters in normal andshift position.

In a. printing telegraph receiver, a plurality of typewheel characters, a printing hammer for each typewheel, a plurality of selectors, means responsive to receiyed code combinations of impulse conditions for variably operating said selectors, means controlled by said selectors for selecting a character on each of said typewheel rows for operation and a selector associated with said plurality of selectors and controlled by-an impulse following said code combination for selecting one of said typewheel rows for operation.

In a printing telegraph receiver, a selector; a rotating device, a magnet energized in accordance with received code combinations of impulse conditions for selectively I operating said rotating device, one direction of current flowing through said magnet acting to operate the rotating device in one direction and the opposite direction of current flowing through said magnet acting to operate the rotating device in the opposlte direction and means operative for rendering said magnet inefiective to operate rotating device while said rotating device is m a position intermediate said predetermined position. c

In a printing telegraph receiver, a rotating shaft, a. magnet responsive to current flowing therethrough in one direction for operating said shaft longitudinally in one direction and responsive to current flowing therethrough in the opposite directibn for moving said shaft longitudinally in the opposite direction and means for locking said shaft from said longitudinal movement at predetermined points in the path of said rotating shaft.
69. In a printing telegraph receiver, a plurality of selector members, arotating shaft operated in accordance with received code combinations of impulse conditions, a plurality of cam members individual to said selector members integral with and positioned around said shaft, said shaft being rotatable for sequentially positioning each of said cam members adjacent to its associated selector member, means for latching said selector -members in position until released by a.
change of impulses in the succeeding cycle of operations, a plurality of rows of type wheel characters, means controlled by said selector members for selecting a character in each row for printing and a further selector associated and operated in accordance with an impulse following each code combination for selecting the row in which the character to be printed is located.
70. In a receiver device, a plurality of selector bars, a plurality of setting forks individual to said selector bars, a lurality of notched disk members, each 0 said disk members being provided with cam members,
a rotating shaft for supporting said disk members, means responsive to received impulses for selectively operating said selector bars, said selector bars being provided with extensions which co-ac't with their associated setting forks, whereby said forks are selectively operated in accordance with movement of said selector bars, said setting forks being arranged to engage the cams of their associated selector disks as said disks rotate for selectively moving said disks longitudinally along said rotating shaft in accordance with the positioning of said selector bars, a type wheel comprising a plurality of rows of type characters, a plurality of seeker mem; bers, a printing hammer for each row normally locked against operation, means whereby said seeker members are selected for operation in accordance with the positionin of said disk members, means :whereby sai seeker members are operated when'said shaft has assumed a predetermined position and means operated in response to an impulse following said code for selectively releasing one of said locked hammers whereby said printing hammer is released for operation.

In a. receiver, a type wheel comprising a plurality of rows of type characters, a plurality of type hammers one for each of said H toward said characters, latching devices in-' rows, said hammers beingnormally urged dividual to each of sa1d hammers for normally latching sald hammer, means responsive to code combinations of impulse conditions for selectively positioning said type characters before said hammers, means responsive to an impulse condition following said code combinations for operating one of said latching members whereby a predetermined one of said hammers is released to print a type character, said means comprising a plurality of selectors, a shaft'for supporting said type wheel and said selectors,
and means for moving said selectors transversely with respect to said shaft for selecting one of said characters for operation.

In a printing telegraph receiver, a plurality of selector members, a plurality of latch members individual thereto, a rotating shaft comprising a plurality of cams individual thereto, a rotating shaft comprising a plurality of cams individual to said selector members, means for rotating said shaft whereby said cam members operate said latch members sequentially, means responsive to received impulses for moving said shaft longitudinally whereby said cam members operate said selector members, means whereby said latch members latch said operated selector members, a second shaft, a plurality of notched selector disks mounted on said shaft, a plurality of rows of type characters, means controlled by selector disks for selecting a character'in each row, a printing hammer for each row and means controlled by an impulse following said impulses for selec-- tively operating one of said printing hammers.

In a printing telegraph receiver, a. pluralityof selector members, a plurality of latch members, a rotating shaft comprising a plurality of latch members, a rotating shaft comprising a plurality of cam members individual to said selector members, said selector members and said latch members being longitudinally spaced from each other wit respect to said shaft, means responsive to line current impulses for moving said shaft for operating said selector members or said latch members in accordance with the longivices for locking itin its assumed position for a predetermined length of time, a plurality of notched disks, a plurality of rows of typewheel characters, a shaft for support ing said disks and said typewheel, means responsive to said selectors for moving said notched disks longitudinally with respect to said shaft in accordance with the operation of said selectors, means controlled by said disks for selecting a character in each row for operation, a latched printing hammer for each typewheel row and means operative in accordance with an impulse condition following said code combination for releasing said printing hammer for operation against va predetermined one of said type characters.

In a selector mechanism, a plurality of selector members; a shaft comprising a plurality of cam members one for each of said selector members; means whereby said cam members are successively brought into operbers individual to said selector members; a rotating shaft; a plurality of cam members integral with said shaft and individual to said selector members; means responsive to received current conditions for moving said shaft longitudinally to position said cam members to operate their individual selectors or latch members; and a plurality of mem-' bers positioned to lock saidshaft against longitudinal movement following each operation.
77. In a selector mechanism, selector members, and means movable in a plurality of directions in response to code combinations of selecting conditions for selectively setting said selector mmbers; said selector members remaining set in any given position until a different position thereof is required in a succeeding cycle of operations.
7 8; In a selector mechanism, a plurality of selector members; a selector setting member movable in a plurality of directions to selectively set said members; means responsive to code combinations of selecting conditions for variably actuating said selector setting member, and-means for latching said selector members in set position until a different position thereof is required in a succeeding cycle of operations.

1 means for variably operating said selectors in accordance with received code combinations of signalling conditions; a second set of selectors; means for operating said second selectors in accordance with the operation of i said first selectors; a plurality of groups of characters on said register; means controlled by said second selectors for selecting a char acter in each group; an additional selector associated with said first selector and variably operated by said first mentioned means in accordance with a signalling condition added to binations of signalling conditions; a second set of selectors; means for operating said second selectors in accordance with the operation of said first selectors; a plurality of characters arranged in groups; means controlled by said second selectors for selecting a character in each group; an additional selector associated with said. first selector and variably operated in accordance with a signalling condition added to each code combination; and means directly controlled by said additional selector for eflecting registration of one of the selected characters in said groups.
82. In a selector mechanism, a rotating device a polarized magnet energized in accordance with received code combinations of impulse conditions of current reversals for selectively positioning said rotating device in one of two predetermined positions; and
means operative for rendering, said magnet ineffective to operate for a predetermined interval said rotatin device, while said rotating device is in eit er of said predetermined positions.

In a register, a plurality of selector members, a rotating shaft operated in accordance with received code combinations of si alling conditions; a plurality of cam mem rs individual to said selector members 1 positioned around said shaft, said shaft being rotatable for sequentially positioning each of said cam members adjacent to its assoclated selector member; .means for latching said selector members in position until re-- leased-by a change of its controlling condition in the succeeding cycle of operations; a plurality of rows of characters; means controlled by said selector members for simultaneously selecting a character in each row;

In a printing telegraph receiver; a first set of selectors selectively set responsive to received code combinations of signalling conditions; a second set of selectors; transfer mechanism operative following the setting of said first selectors for transferring the settings thereof to said second set of selectors; printing apparatus variably conditioned for printing operations in accordance with the settin of said second set of selectors; a plura ity of type hammers; controlling meansfor said printing hammers and a selector operated in response to a s1 nalling condition in addition to said c e combinationof conditions, said selector being directly connected to and variably operatingsaid controlling means to condition one or the other of'said printing hammers for operation in accordance with the setting of said selector.
