IMPROVEMENT IN PEN-HANDLE ATTACHMENTS.

Specification fdrming part of Letters Patent No. 181,062, dated August 15, 1876 application filed November 25, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. FOYE, of Portland, in the county of Cumberland, and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pen-Handle Attachments; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pen-stock and pen with my invention applied. Fig. 2 shows top plan views of modifications of my improvements.

The object of the invention is to provide an attachment to an ordinary pen -handle, by which the holding of it is rendered easier for the fingers and hand, and by means of which also it can be held at any inclination which the convenience of the user may require.

The device itself consists of a piece of wood, gutta-percha, cork, or any other substance, hollow so as to fit over the lower end of the stock, and long enough to receive the fingers and thumb, by which the stock is held. The characteristic of this piece is that it is provided with inclined faces extending its length, and made of such width and inclined at such an gies as the different hands of different users may require. By turning the piece upon the pen-stock the angles may be varied so as to suit the convenience of the user.

In Fig. l, a shows the piece, and Fig. 2 illustrates modifications of the same. b shows the aperture in the piece a.

It is evident that this improvement may as well be applied to pencils as to pen-stocks. If desired, the pen-stock and piece a may be constructed in one piece but in this case the said piece a would not be adjustable.

I do not claim thumb and finger rests attached t0 the sides of a cylinder, as shown in Patent No. 10,294 of April 10, 1855. This structure is different from mine, and does not accomplish the objects for which mine is intended; neither do 1 claim a pen-holder, the finger part of which is made triangular, as shown in Patent No. 77,422 of 1868. My invention differs from both of these in the particular that it has an adjustable piece, with sides or faces of different inclinations. The adjustable quality of the piece a. in my invention is its great advantage. In a long and continuous use of the pen the quick and easy change, at will, of the angles or faces, against which the fingers rest, affords great relief to the hand, and prevents pain and cramping. In my invention the sides or faces against which the fingers rest can be changed as often as desired without loss of time. I do not claim either a pen-stock having an enlarged end, and a part of said stock having finger-rests of any formation, or a pen-stock supplied with bent pieces of metal encompassing the lower end, and capable of being turned around upon the pen-stock, as shown in the rejected cases of T. It. Timby, June 7, 1871, and G. W. Wooley, July 3, 1868. I claim only the piece having its three or more sides of varied inclination perforated to receive the pen-stock, and capable of being turned around upon the stock in order to afford change of position, relatively to each other, of the lingers in handling the pen-stock.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In combination with an ordinary pen-stock the adjustable piece at, having the aperture b and the inclined faces, as and for the purposes set forth.
