Description

1. J. JOLIDON NAIL TRIMMER Filed Sept.
June 9, 1931.
Patented June 9, 1931 UNETED STATES CHARLES J. JOLIDON, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT NAIL TRIMMER Application filed September 15, 1928. Serial No. 306,169.
My invention relates to the class of devices employed for manicuring purposes in clipping and trimming the nails, and an object of my invention, among others, is the production of a device of this class that shall be simple in construction and particularly eflicient and convenient to use.
One form of a nail trimmer embodying my invention and in the construction and use 10 of which the objects herein set out, as well as others, may be attained, is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side of my improved trimmer.
Figure 2 is a top view of the same.
Figure 3 is a bottom view thereof.
Figure 4c is a view in central lengthwise section crosswise of the pivot.
Figure 5 is an isometric view of the oute member.
Figure 6 is a similar view of the inner member.
In the accompanying drawings the numeral 10 denotes the outer generally channel shaped member of my improved trimmer, and 11 the similarly shaped inner member thereof. These are formed to create a box like structure at the front end so that nail clippings will be caught within this box or receptacle and thus prevented from flying away from the trimmer when in use. To this end the outer member 10 has sides 12 and a bottom 13 with a jaw 14L connecting said sides at the upper ends thereof, thereby forming a head with an opening 15 at its a handle 16 having sides 17 with beveled file a washer 24 secured on the stud to provide for friction to hold the nail cleaner against freedom of movement.
The member 11 has a head comprising sides front end. This member is also extended into 25, a. jaw 26 and a bottom 27 formed as a box-like structure, as in the case of the other member hereinbefore described. This head is of a size to fit within the head 28 on the member 10, and as shown in Figures 1 and I of the drawings. The jaws l4: and 26 are sharpened and are relatively positioned to 7 thrust the handles and also the jaws 14. and 26apart when not held by engagement of the catch with the stud.
The head of the member 11 is located with-v in the head of the member 10, when the parts are assembled, and said heads are pivotally connected as by a pivot 34: in a manner that will be readily understood and when so connected a box or receptacle is formed by the head and comprising a compartment within which nail clippings will be caught and which will, therefore, be prevented from flying ofi. f I The cleaner 21, or the head of the stud 22 when separately formed from the cleaner, is provided with a recess 36 that is roughened to provide an abrading surface for the purpose of filing the nails, and the head 37 of the catch 32 is also roughened for a like purpose.
It will be noted that the beveled file edges 18, when the handles are closed together, form a groove within which finger nails may bgf readily and conveniently filed or smoothed o In accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes I have described the principles of ope-ration of my invention, together with the device which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof; but I desire to have it understood that the device shown is only illustrative and that the inspring 33 mounted, as shown in Figure 4, to
vention may be carried out by other means and applied to uses other than those above set out.
I claim:
1. A nail trimmer including two members pivotally united and each comprising a head having registering and overlapping side closing Walls and bottom walls forming a compartment to receive clippings, said members also including handles havin registering closing side walls to form ahollow extension from said compartment and crossed cutting jaws located in cooperative cutting relation on each of said heads.
2. A nail trimmer including two channel shaped members each having at one end a transversely extending cutting aw arranged at right angles to and disconnected from the bottom wall of the channel, means for pivotally uniting said members, means for forcing the cutting jaws towards each other, said members having cooperating portions forming a hollow handle, a stud projecting inwardly from the bottom of one of said handles and having a notch, and a catch slidably mounted on the other handle to engage said notch.
3. A nail trimmer including two channel shaped members pivotally united and having cooperatively acting transverse cutting jaws supported solely at their ends on the side walls of the members, handles cooperatively arranged on said members, a stud projecting from one handle towards the other, and a catch movably mounted on the other handle to engage said stud to lock the handles against opening movement.
4. A nail trimmer comprising two memhere including handle portions and heads in the ends thereof, each head being open on one side and having a band formed by a slot extending across the end, said bands forming cutting jaws, and means for pivotally connecting said members one within the other.
5. A nail trimmer comprising two channel shaped members each including a handle portion and a head at one end of each handle portion, each head comprising side parts with a band curved lengthwise extending across the end of the head between the side parts, said bands bounding slots extending across the ends of the heads, and means for securing said heads together one within the other.
