Description

June 9, 1931.
D ORSAY MQC. WHITE BRAKE DRUM AND WHEEL Filed Sept. 21, 1925 INVENTOR DORSAY M CALL Wum:
ATTORNEY Patented June 9, 1 931 PATENT OFFICE DORSAY McCAI-L WHITE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS BRAKE DRUM AND WHEEL Application filed September 21, 1925.. Serial No. 57,600.
This invention relates to brake drums, and is illustrated as embodied ina front disk wheel for an automobile. An object of the invention is to use the drum, preferably formed at its center with an integrally drawn hub, as the major part of the wheel, by mounting a tire-carrying annulus on the braking flange of the drum. The annulus is shown as supported by a stiffening flange extending 10 radially at the free edge of the drum. I prefer to form a tight joint for the brake enclosure, by forming on the backing plate a flange projecting into the angle between the annulus and the stiffening flange.
The above and other objects and features of the invention, including various novel combinations of parts and desirable particu- A lar constructions, will be apparent from the following description of one illustrative embodiment shown in the accompanying drawing, in which:
The figure is a vertical section through one front wheel and through associated parts. The major part of the wheel, including the parts requiring the greatest strength, are here shown formed from a brake drum 10, drawn out at its center to form an integral outwardly-projecting tubular hub 12, threaded to receive a hub cap 14. Hub 12 is bored out from opposite ends to form cylindrical seats for antifriction bearings 16 and 18, with abrupt shoulders engaging the sides of the bearings next the center of the hub, to determine the positions of the bearings. Bearings 16 and 18 rotatably support the drum on the spindle 20 of a front wheel knuckle 22. 3
The cylindrical braking flange 24 of the 40 drum serves as a support taking all the load from a tire-carrying annulus 26, demountably or permanently secured thereon, and shown flanged outwardly to form a flange 28 coaxial with respect to the drum and substanll tially in the plane of the drum, and which supports the rim 30, demountably or permanent ly fastened to the annulus.
I prefer that the rear face of the annulus should be supported by a stifi'enin flange 32 extending radially at the free e ge of the drum. In order to provide a tight joint for the brake enclosure, the brake backing plate 34 carried by knuckle 22 may have at its outer edge a flange 36 projecting into the angle between the annulus 26 and stiffening flange 32.
While one illustrative embodiment has been described in detail, it is not my intention to limit the scope of the invention to that particular embodiment, or otherwise than 'by the terms of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A brake drum having an outwardly-projecting flange atits free edge, in combination with an annular member encircling said drum adjacent said flange, and extending radially outwardly and substantially arallel to said flange and a backing plate aving a part. encircling the brake-drum flange and ar ranged with the edge of said part immediately adjacent the rear face of the annular mem- 2. A brake drum having an outwardlyprojecting flange at its free edge, in combination with a separate annular member having a radial web secured to and encircling said drum adjacent said flange, and a backing plate having an edge flange encircling the brake-drum flange and arranged with the edge of the backing-plate flange immediately adjacent the rear face of the web of the annular member.
3. In combination, a cylindrical brake drum having a radial flange projecting outwardly 85 at its free edge, a radial extension member secured to said radial flange and offset therefrom so as to form an angle between the edge of said radial flange and the inner face of said extension member, and a backing plate clos- 9o ing the open end of said drum and having its edfie bent to lie within said angle.
4. combination, a brake drum having a cylindrical braking flange with a stiffening flange extending radially outward at its free edge, an annulus engaging the front face of the stifli'ening flange and extending 'radially outward beyond the edge of same, and a backing plate for the brake drum havln a flange at its outer ed e rojecting into t e angle between the sti emng flange and said annulus to form a close joint for a brake enclosed between the drum and backing plate.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name.
DORSAY MCCALL WHITE.
