BYRNE, OF MOBILE, ALABAMA AUTOMOBILE ADVERTISING APPARATUS Application filed May 22, 1930. Serial No. 454,696.
The present invention relates to an advertising apparatus particularly designed for incorporation in an automobile and has for its prime object to provide movable advertising display means actuated by air currents incident to the movement of the automobile.
Another very important object of the invention resides in the provision of an apparatus of this nature which uses the exhaust as an actuating means.
A still further very important object of the invention resides in the provision of an apparatus of this nature which is simple in its construction, compact and convenient'in its arrangement of parts, thoroughly eflicient and reliable in use and operation, and otherwise well adapted to the purpose intended.
With the above and numerous other objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawings: 7
Figure 1 is a rear elevation of an automobile embodying the features of my invention showing the rear door removed,
Figure 2 is a fragmentary vertical longitudinal section taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Figure 8, V
Figure 3 is a fragmentary top plan view,
Figure 4: is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 4.-4 of Figure 2,
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 55 of Figure 3,
Figure 6 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 66 of FigureS,
Figure 7 is a detail view of one of the rollers, and
Figure 8 is a rear elevation of an automobile embodying the features of my invention.
Referring to the drawings in detail it will zontal compartments 8 one at the top and one at the bottom, these compartments surrounding an opening 9 leading in'the body 6. In each compartment there is mounted an endless web 10 trained about the rollers 11 which are interconnected together so as to be driven simultaneously. These webs, of course, are adapted to have suitable advertising matter thereon.
A door 12 is hingedly mounted as at 14 on the rear of the body to close the casing andhas transparent panels 7 and 8 to be disposed over the compartments 7 and 8 respectively so that the webs therein will be visible and this door is provided with a central opening 9 concentric with the opening 9.
' In the top of the body 6 there is formed at one side a compartment 20 open at the top as at 21. A funnel 22 is mounted on the top of the body and the smaller end thereof is immediately in front of a fan 23 which has a belt and pulley connection 24 with one of the rollers of one of the endless webs 10 so that as the vehicle moves forwardly the air collected in the funnel will be discharged rearwardly from the smaller end thereof on to the fan 23 and cause the moving of the various interconnected webs as will be quite apparent.
In order to assist this movement I provide a fluid motor on the bottom of the body under the compartment which comprises a casing 25 with a paddle wheel 26 therein having buckets 27 on the periphery thereof and a tangential inlet 28 is connected with the exhaust pipe 29. The outlet is designated by the numeral 30 and is at the rear. This motor is operatively connected with the webs and rollers by suitable belt and pulley means 31.
From the above detailed description it will be seen that when the automobile is moving forwardly the different advertising matter appears through the transparent panels in the door and even when the vehiole is standing still and the motor is going these various advertising endless webs will be in motion because of the exhaust.
It isthoug ht that the construction, utility and advantages of this invention will now be quite apparent to those skilled in this art without a more detailed description thereof.
The present embodimentof the invention has been disclosed in considerable detail merely for the purposes of exemplification since in actual practice it attains the features of advantage enumeratedas desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description.
It will be apparent that changes in the details of construction, and in the combination andarrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
1. The combination with a vehicle of movable advertising matter, a fan, a funnel on the vehicle leading to the fan so that air collected in the funnel by the movement of the vehicle will be discharged on thetan, and means operatively connecting the fan with. the movable advertising matter for causing the actuation thereof, an exhaust pipe, an exhaust motor, and means operatively connecting the exhaust motor with the movable advertising matter, said movable advertising matter being in the form of a plurality of endless webs trained about the rollers, said belts and rollers being intercomiected by simultaneous operation, the rear of the vehicle being provided with a plurality of compartments one for each web und set of rollers, said compartments surrounding a central opening in the rear of the vehicle, a door hingedly mounted to swing over the compartments to close them, and said door having transparent panels one for each compartment.
2. The combination with a vehicle including a body, movable. display matter associated with the body, of means for actuating the display mattercomprising a rotatable wind. wheel extending transversely across thetop oi the body having a portion thereof prO eCting above the roof of the body, and a wind deflector extending. transversely of the body in front of the wind wheel including side walls anda connecting top wall, the top wall inclining downwardly and rearwardly toward the projecting portion of the wind wheel,
