IMPROVEMENT IN MODES 0F REPLACING WORN-OUT FAUCETS 1N WATER-PIPES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 180,639, dated August 1, 1876; application filed February 14, 1876. v I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS W. REES, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Method of Replacing lVorn-Out Faucets on Water-Pipes, of which the followingis a specification:
The accompanying drawing represents a sectional side elevation of faucet and waterpipe, illustrating my improved method of replacing worn-out faucets.
My invention is designed to provide an improved method of removing old and worn-out faucets from lead or other pipes, and replacing them by new ones in a neat and strong manner without the use of fire or solder, and attaching them in less time and at less expense than by the old method, which consists in shutting off the water, unscrewing and detaching the pipe from the board, and then heating the same until the old faucet may be taken off and the new one inserted by wiping ajoint with the pipe. In most cases the soldering on makes an unsightly job,as the pipe is awkward toget at, and also on account of the moisture of the pipe. My method consists in sawing off the old faucet near the pipe,
cutting a top or thread in the remaining socket part, and screwing in the new faucet.
In the drawing, A represents a lead or other water-pipe, to which the faucets are soldered in the customary manner. For replacing the worn-out faucetby a new one, the water is first shut off, when the barrel of the old faucet is immediately sawed oft near the pipe, leaving a short piece, B, attached to the pipe by the surrounding solder. This remaining piece B is then reamed and cut with an interior screw-thread, so that the new faucet 0 may be screwed in. This is accomplished without the least inconvenience and dirt, without using fireand splashing about of hot solder, and without displacing or disfiguring the pipe. The sawing off of the old faucet and screwing .in of the new one consumes less time, costs considerably less than the replacing by the old way, and forms a superior method of attaching new faucets to Waterpipes. I
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patcut- The method herein described of removing worn-out faucets from water-pipes and replacing them by new ones, consisting in sawing off the old faucet near the barrel end, tapping the remaining socket-piece, and screwing in the new faucet, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
THOMAS WESTON nuns.
