59 the guide for the feed bed. 1 in place... A pair of-adjusting screws 1221 serve to control by fine adjustment the height of frame bar 11, v
The clamp frame 13 adjusts up and down on the face of the frame bar 11. This is accomplished for clamping purposes by a pair of cams 14, see Figs. 1, 3 and 9, the cams being provided with lever arms 141 which are connected by the link 1142 which is knurled to serve as a handle, so that the cams are operated simultaneously and quickly. These cams force the clamp frame 13 down. The clamp on its face is provided with a series of clamping rollers 15 which are journaled in suitable spring pressed blocks 151 which play up and down in guide slots 131 in the clamp 13. he rolls are held yieldingly downwardby the springs 152 on shanks 153 which shanks reciprocate in suitable openings in the said clamp frame 13.
A presser top feed means cooperates with the feed bed opposite the cutter head and receives the clamped veneers. This presser feed conveyor comprises a frame bar 16. r This is provided with a plurality of spring pressed rollers 17, compar ble in all details with. rolls 15, which cooperate with the said feed bed. Around these rollers 1'? is disposed an endless belt 18 which insures the operation of the feed rolls after the engagement by them of the advancing end of the clamped Veneers. The frame ba 16 is can ried on uprights 12 exactly like uprights 12 and frame 16 is made adjustable by means identical with the means that adjust frame bar 11.
A yielding guide 19, see Fig. 5, is pressed laterally by springs 191 and engages the links of the feed bed. Guide 192 on the 0pposite side is adjustable by set screws 193, 194, see Figs. 2 and 6. By adjusting this guide 192 so that it delivers the bed in a slightly curved path to the planer head, what is known as a hollow joint is produced. That is a joint in which the ends of the veneerstrips press slightly in advance of the center part, which insures a tight oint for the entire length of the veneer.
20 is a work guide that extends from th clamp section to the feed section terminating near the cutter-head. The work guide 20 is controlled by a pair of racks 201 connected thereto which are acted upon by'a pair of segment gears or pinions 202, see dotted'lines in Fig. 4. These are controlled by the lever 203 on rockshaft 204 on which the said segment gears 201, 202 aremounted. A scale 205 is provided for the adjustment of the said lever 203 which is clamped by set screw 206 to the slotted segment bar 207, see Fig. 4. The amount of cut thus be very closely regulated.
The links of the feed bed conveyor are lubricated by providing an adjustable spring guide slide with felt pads saturated with lubricant, see Figs. 7 and 8. This lubricator.
is a guide and consists of a back 21 with hinged side wings 22 held yieldinglyin place by springs 23, see Fig. 7. Felts 24 and 25, 25 for carrying lubricant are carried by the back and sides. These are provided with perforated faces 241, 251, 251 of sole leather to resist wear and permit through lubrication.
in operation with the machine running, a number of layers of veneer, see Figs. 3 and 5, are placed on the yielding table with their edges projecting over the feed bed against the veneer guide. The clamp 13 is forced down onto the same by the actuation of the cams 14. The veneers, directed by the guide 20 are then carried by the feed bed from under the clamp, owing to the revolving of the rollers 15 of the said clamp to the presser feed roller section, where as soon as the veneers are engaged they are advanced, because of the presence of the belt 18 around the said feed rollers. The feed bed being controlled by the guide 192, it carries the clamped and retained veneers past the cutterhead- Owing to the slight deflection of the feed bed, the planer forms what is known as a hollow joint.
l v hcn one edge of a bunch of veneers has been planed and jointed, the guide 20 is withdrawn. The veneers can then be clamped separately in a pile together and ad justedfin the machine according to the scale of the table 9 and the opposite edge uniformly planed and ointed. Thus identical veneer strips can be produced.
The structure of my machine can be varied by providing driven feed rollers and a chain feed for the final half of the machine as seen in Fig. 9. 1 show in Fig. 9 an endless feed carrier 24 driven by a pulley 25 which pulls the carrier past feed rollers that are comparable to those appearing in the principal View, Figs. 1 and 3.
