Description

May 19, 1931. w. D. SMITH APPLICATOR FOR VIBRATING MACHINES Filed March 16', 1929 j INVENTOR BY Waflarc fl jzwi/fi ATTORNEYS strap.
Patented May 19,1931
.arrrroaron non vrBnArrne- MACHINES Application fi1ed.March 16, 1929. Serial No. 347,475.
This invention relates to an improved applicator for a vibrating machine. a
The objects of the invention are: First, to provide such an applicator and 5 connections especially adapted to the treat ment of the spinal column and adjacent tissue.
Second, to provide such an applicator in which the degree of force applied can be con veniently varied by the user through elastic means. v Third, to provide an applicator which is especially adapted to correct subluxated or misplaced vertebraeby an oscillatory, vibratory motion under pressure.
Fourth, to provide such a structure which may be readily applied to the vibrator strap when desired for use and to permit the free use of the vibrator strap for other purposes.
99 Fifth, to provide such a structure with an improved joint means which insures direct line of application with a control of the force applied.
Objects relating to details and economies of my invention will appear from the description to follow. A preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. l is a perspective view of my improved 5 applicator in use in conjunction with a stand ard construction of vibrating machine.
Fig. 2 is a transverse detail horizontal sec tion through the apparatus as it appears in use in its relation to a section of the spinal column.
Fig. 3 is a detail View of the elastic means in the vibrator strap.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail perspective view of the applicator detached from the Fig. 5 is a detail end view of the applicator with the outer elastic cover in'section showing the pivoted hinge support within.
Fig. 6 shows the application of this special structure in operation in its relation to a vertebra.
Fig. 7 is an enlarged detail longitudinal sectional view on a line corresponding to line 7-7 of F1g. 2 showing a modified form in which the hinge section feature isonntted.
' The parts will be identified by their numerv" a ls of reference which are thesamein all the views.
1 1s a vibrator machme of approved construction. 2 is a strap therefor provided with an elastic section 21. 3 is'the main body of.
the applicator to'wliich is secured the pivotal back 4-. to which is secured the back plate 5 on which are attaching lugs 51, 52 in spaced relation to eachother for receiving the vibra- 6o tor strap 2. Slots 54 are'provided in the lugs. The body '3 is provided with longitudinal rounded parallel projections 31 which are of suc-h'length as to subtend three or more vertebrae. The body 3 is connected to the back 4"{65 by a pair of links 6 havingpivots 61, 62. A central rib 41 projects from. the pivotal baclg' l. 4' f-g Pads 32 are providedon the body portion to give a yielding contact and avoid noisein the manipulation. f j I j Y In Fig. 7, the pivoted back portion feature is omitted as'will be seen by examining'that view.'v Surrounding the whole is a casing of sheet J India rubber 7 which is clamped in place by the back plate '5'which is held inplace by screws 53. The outer casing of rubber sub-- tends the projecting ribs 31 and formsan' elastic cushion between thesame' for engage- 3580 ment with the spinal column, asseen particu larly in Fig. 2. 1 k
-When the vibrator is vibrated, it oscillates this applicator, first, within one side and then the other of the spinal column, making contact with the transverse processes of the'vertebrae and enveloping tissue, and it may be advanced upand down, and because it subtends three of the vertebrae, it ofco ursetends w to straighten and adjust any vertebrae that maybe out of place and'bring it into line thus opening intervertebral foramina' and relieving nerve'pressure. As the vibration may be rapid orfsl'ow, or gentle or still'more forceful I to manipulate the spine, limber it'upand induce circulation which results in general improvement as a consequence.
I have illustrated my improvements with considerable modifications and the same could be further considerably modified without departing from my invention. I desire to claim the same broadly and also specifically as pointed out in the appended claims.
In this behalf, I recognize that the belt with an elastic section like that appearing in Fig. 3 in and of itself is old and I utilize this old feature especially in combination with my improved applicator and consider the same only as an element of my combination.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. The combination with a vibrating machine, of a vibrating belt containing an elastic section to vary its actionyan applicator consisting of a body part with parallel ribs, a pivotal back section supported thereby with elastic pads therebetween and a pivotal joint for maintaining the same elastically in position, a sheet rubber envelope embracing the same and subtending the ribs to form a cushion, and a back plate with oppositely projecting lugs for embracing the said vibrator belt and maintaining the applicator in position.
2. The combination with a vibrating machine, of a vibratmg belt, an applicator consisting of a body part with parallel llbS, a
pivotal back section supported thereby with elastic pads therebetween and a pivotal joint for maintaining the same elastically in position, a sheet rubber envelope embracing the same and subtending the ribs to form a cushion, and a back plate with means for embracing the said vibrator belt and maintaining the applicator in position.
3. The combination with a vibrating machine, of a vibrating belt, an applicator consisting of a body part with parallel ribs, a pivotal back section supported thereby with elastic pads therebetween and a pivotal oint for maintaining the same elastically in position, and a back plate with means for embracing the said vibrator belt and maintaining the applicator in position.
4. The combination with a vibrating machine, of a vibrating belt, an applicator consisting of a body part with parallel ribs spaced to embrace the opposite sides of the spinal column, and a back plate with means for embracing the said vibrator belt and maintaining the applicator in position.
5. The combination with avibrating machine, of a vibrating belt containing an elastic section to vary its action, an applicator consisting of a body part with parallel ribs spaced to embrace the opposite sides of the spinal column, and a back plate with oppositely projecting lugs for embracing the hand.
