Referring to the drawings 1 designates a standard A. R. A. journal box to .which the lid 2 is swingingly attached by means of a bolt or rivet 3. Y
A double spiral spring 4 has a loop 5 between the two spirals 6, 6 and has two free ends l7, 7 as shown. The two free ends are adapted toviit invholes 8 provided for this the lid.
The journal box has a projection 10 integral therewith which is curved on the inner side as at 11 to accommodate the fastening i 4U member 3 which also passes through the perforated lugs 11. I have also designed the box so that it s almost completely sealed, to prevent foreign matter from entering therein. The flange 23 on the box extends all around the box except at a small place on the top Where it must be left off to provide the necessary clearance for the spring. On the ordinary lid a iange just extends around the bottom and sides and in some instances the ordinary lid may have the flange extend to the points 24, 24, Fig. l. By extending the flange inward as at 25, 25 the chances of dirt and other matter entering the box is greatly reduced.
While my invention pertains primarily to standard A. R; A. journal boxes it is to be understoodthat-it may be applied successfully to other journal boxes and to all other devices Wherev this type of'fastening means may be employed. Thev invention shows a fastening member provided with. a head on one end but I may provide a member having both ends split and held in position in the same manner as I have described above relative to the one end. f

A journal box including perforated lugs, a lid for said box having perforations therein, and a fastening member for connecting said lid to said box extended through said perforated lugsand said perforations having a split extending inwardly from one end including an enlarged portion'disposed in and expanded to conform with an interior enlargement in one of said Vperforations to retain the fastening member in position.
