A fastening member 25 provided with a knurled and slotted head 26, is threaded into the extension 22, and when tightened to engage the bar 24, operates to secure the member `W in a selected position of adjustment. It will thus be clear that the support 16 and carriage 19 broadly provide a mounting or a means by which the member W is rendered adjustable both longitudinally and transversely of the bed, and co-act to rigidly support the member with the latter overlying the bed l0 at one side of the saw l2. f
The extremity of the bar 24 which confronts the saw is provided with a horizontally disposed work engaging portion or head 27 which is rounded as indicated at 28 and projects laterally from the bar towards the back rest 11 for co-action with the latter in holding a length of material on the bed 10 in a fixed position for sawing. The portion 27 is provided with a vertically disposed threaded opening 29 normally closed by a plug 30, which, when removed, permits a postl to be threaded into the opening so as to increase the height ot the portion 27 sutliciently to engage and iirmly hold relatively wide material which is to be supported on the bed 10 with one side edge resting onv the bed.
The operation of the device is as follows: With a length of material placed upon the bed l0 in the position to be sawed at a predetermined loca-tion along its length, the work-engaging members W and W, which overlie the bed l0 at opposite sides of the saw, are adjusted longitudinally and transversely of the bed as required to bring their portions27 and 27a into lirm engagement with the material in proximity to the saw as shown in Figure l. By now tightening the fastening members 20, 20, 25 and 25a the members IV and WV will co-act with. the back rest 11 to firmly hold the material in a liXed position for sawing. t will be clear that as `the members lV and lV can be adjusted close to the saw regardless of the angle at which the latter is disposed, that extremely short lengths of material can be securely held in afixed position on the bed l0. Furthermore it Will be noted that in instances where it is desired to saw only a short section or block from an end of a length of material, as shown in Figure l, that such short section will be firmly held against displacement by one of the members lW or Wg and that in the event a length gaging member such as forms part of the gaging instrument for miter boxes embodied in my co-pending application for Patent Serial No. 252,265

tremity of the short section, the latter will be prevented from being rocked to an oblique position by the saw as the latter is withdrawn upon separat-ion of the short section from the main body of the material, thereby obviating damage to the saw as well as to the sawed edges ot the material.
From a consideration of Figure 8 it will be seen that with the saw positioned as shown in full or broken lines so as to saw a miter, that the members W and W can be suitably adjusted to iirmly hold in a fixed position, a short length of material such as molding, and thus enable such short lengths to be conveniently utilized when required.
In the event that it is desired to saw a length of material at a less angle than is possible with the saw adjusted to either extreme angular position as shown in Figure 9, the members W and W are removed from their respective carriages 19 and 19a and transposed or reversed as shown in this figure, so that the member W is supported by the carriage 19a, and the member W bythe carriage 19. As the two members are identical in construction with the exception .of one being yright hand and the other left hand, the portions 27 and 27 a of the members will now project away from the back rest l1 as shown in Figure 9 instead of towards the back rest as shown in the remaining figures.
The saw is now adjusted to its maximum angle and a previously marked length of material is placed under the saw. With the member W adjusted for its portion 27 to coact with the edge of thesaw receiving slot in the back rest, in forming abutments against which the material can rest in the proper position to be sawed at the previously marked angle, the operator by now pressing the material against the thus formed abutments, can manipulate the saw to saw the material at the desired angle, as the material will be lirmly supported in an oblique position with respect to the length of thebed 10.
When relatively wide material such as base boards with a molded side edge, are to be sawed, the material is placed upright .on the bed 10 with its opposite side edge restingy y upon the bed, and the posts .31 are applied to the members W and W so as to increase the height of the portions 27 and 27a suicient to securely hold the material in a fixed position on the bed.
Although I have herein shown and described only one form of work holding device for miter boxes embodying my invention, it is to be understood that various changes and modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention and the spirit and scope of the I claim as my invention: l. In combination,a miter box, a pair of supports secured to the bed of the miter box 2. A Work holding device for miter lboxes comprising a pair of Work engaging members, means for mounting the members on a miter box to extend longitudinally of and to overlie the bed of the latter at opposite sides of the saw, for adjustment longitudinally and transversely of the bed, and means for securing the members in selected positions of adjustment, the members having horizontally offset Work engaging portions, and posts detachably secured to said portions.

A Work supporting device for miter boxes comprising a pair of supports having guidevvays and adapted to be secured to the bed of a miter box at opposite ends thereof to dispose the guidevvays transversely of the length of the bed, carriages slidably mounted in the guidevvays,'means for securing the carriages against movement, Work engaging members slidably mounted in the carriages for movement transversely with respect tothe length of the guidevvays, and means for securing the members against movement in the carriages, the members having horizontally offset Work engaging portions at their extremities.
5. A Work supporting device for miter boxes comprising a pair of supports having guidevvays and adapted to be secured to the bed of a miter box at oppositeends thereof to dispose the guidevvays transversely Vof the length of the bed, carriages slidably mounted in the guidevvays, means for securing the carriages against movement, work engaging members slidably mounted in the carriages for movement transversely With respect to the length of the guidevvays, and means for securing the members against movement `in the carriages, the members having horizontally offset Work engaging portions at their ex-v tremities, and Work engaging posts detachably secured to said portions ofthe members.
