PATENT OFFICE HOWARD W. STEIGER, OF LAKEWOOD, OHIO VISE Application filed .Tune 24, 1930. Serial No. 463,399.
This invention relates to a vise and has for its principal object to provide such an implement which shall be capable of ready and rapid adjustment to different uses and positions and which will be comparatively simple in construction while embodying various features making for durability, cheapness and strength. A further and more limited object is to provide a vise having a fixed base member and a movable base member with which one jaw is integral and which is provided with an opening through which an'elongated shank portion of a sliding jaw may extend and embodying an improved guide and stop mechanism, an improved means for anchoring the movable portion at any position of rotation, an improved lubricating mechanisin, and superior clamping features. Other objects will become apparent from the fol 2 lowing description when taken in connection with the drawings.
Fig. 1 is a central vertical section taken through my improved device; Fig. 2 is a section on line- 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary section corresponding to a portion of the line 33 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a section on line 4.-'1 of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a fragmentary plan view of a portion of the sliding jaw member; and Fig. 6 is a fragmentary bottom plan view of the upper portion of the jaw member 18 showing the mutilated threads.
In the drawings I have shown one embodiment of my invention. The upper portions of the vise are mounted on a fixed base mem ber 10 secured to any suitable support 11 as by bolts 12. This base member includes a fiange 13 for attachment tothe surface 11 and a body portion provided with a central opening 14: and an annular upwardly converging open top groove '15 concentriowith the opening 14. Thegroove 15 is provided with anopening 16 through the bottom thereof for the reception of the pyramidal head 17 of afbolt 17. Rotatably mounted on the fixed base 10 is a: jaw portion 18 which includes the jaw 18 and a base portion 18 which may be either integral'with the jaw portion 18 as shown, or fixedly attached thereto in any suitable manner. The base portions18 is provided with a downwardly extending boss 19 which is centrally drilled and tapped to receive a stud 20 which by means of the washer 21 firmly secures the same to the fixed base 10. A socket'22 is provided in the base 18 to receive a portion of an angular guide and stop means 23. The member 23 extends through an opening in the base 18 and the socket 22 communicates with said opening and receives the horizontally extending portion 23 of the guide and stop means 23. A supporting extension 24 is provided integral with the portion 18 to serve as auxiliary supporting means for the elon gated shank portion of the sliding jaw. Extending through the jaw member 18 is a large elongated opening the upper portion of which is provided with a mutilated thread, 25. An opening 26 is provided for the introduction oflubricant and may be of any approved type, such as that shown. at 27 being a valved nipple of the type generally used for lubricating automobiles.
Extending through the opening in the jaw member 18 is the elongated shank portion31 of a sliding jaw 30. The sliding jaw 30" is provided with an upwardly opening lubri' cation chamber 32 and a downwardly opening groove or hollow interior 33. The chamber 32 is defined by vertical walls 34,. and a clamping shaft 35 is journalled longitudinally of the shank portion 31 and extends I through the end walls 34% of the chamber 32 andhas a niultilated screw 32 non-rotatably secured thereon in the chamber 32.- The shaft 35 extends through the chamber 33 and at one end is jointed to a cylindrical member 36 which is secured thereto by meansof a pin 37-extending outside the member 36 and being positionable underneath an annular overhang-flange' 38 which is provided with an integral stop portion 39.
The bolt 17 cooperates-at its upper end with a nut 17* which is provided with an operating handle 17 extending therethrough. It willbe obvious that the movable portion of the vise may be rotated about the axis of the stud 20 when the handle 17 is rotated to relax the clamping cooperation between the fixed base 10 and the jaw portion. 18through the action of thebolt 17% The angle member 23 I will serve to limit the movement of the sliding body by contacting with the end walls of the groove 33, while serving an auxiliary guiding function by co-acting with the edges 31 of the elongated shank portion 81, as best seen in Fig. 2. The multilated screw 32 is secured to the clamping shaft 35 by means of a screw 32 and pins 32, if desired.
From the foregoing it will be evident that I provide a device which is well adapted for its intended purpose, and while I have shown and described a preferred embodiment, I wish it understood that my invention is susceptible of other embodiments and that I am limited only in accordance with the appended claims.
