- This invention relates toan improvement in locating devices for punches and more particularly to hand punches of the plier type adapted to perforate paper, cardboard, straw 5 and other similar materials.

The device is particularly adapted for office use since it is the practice in the orderly and systematized filingof papers in a business oflice'to keep all the correspondence, etc., relating to a particular item in a separate file and in their chronological order; thus it becomes necessary to fasten the documents together with a semi-permanent fastener in order that the sheets donot become lost or out of place. The difficulty, however, has been in the punching of the individual sheets in the samev predetermined position to recelve asuitable fastener so that when attached to the main file, all the papers will be evenly and orderly arranged. As used in this connection one of the primary. objects of this improvement is to provide a means for facilitating the accurate positioning of the punch elements with respect to the sheet to be perforated so that two or more of the perforated sheets may be clipped together with a suitable fastener in perfect alignment.

Heretofore it has been imposslble to so locate a punch of. the plier type with respect to the corners of successive sheets and secure any degree of uniformity in the location of the perforations. The result has been that the variouspapers of'a glven group pro ected at their edges and thus rendered susceptible to easy and serious damage. j I

Another object of my invention is to provide a perforating tool with a device for locating two adjacent edges of sheets of paperor similar material in a predetermined position with respect to the perforating elements whereby the perforated articles when fastened together with a common fastener will have their adjacent edges uniformly aligned. -Another and furtherobject of my invention is to equip ahandpunch of theplier type with a simple and accurate'locating device whereby the time spent in locatingthe punch in a predetermined position with'respect to the article to be punched is reduced to a mini- 'mum andthus the punching of a number of articles is greatly expedited.

Referring more particularly to Fig. 1 the tool consists essentially of a pair of pivotally connected handles 10 having jaws 11 and '12 pivotally secure thereto; Near the outer end of the'jaw 11 is mounted a knife or male member 13 of the punch. The member 13, as will be understood, may be of any shape or contour desired since the particular shape-of the blade in no way affects the utility of the device. Thelower jaw 12 is provided near its outer end with a complemental socket 14 corresponding in contour with the blade 13, the two parts operating as die members to the end that when brought into operative relation they serve to remove a portion of an interposed sheet of paper.

Between the jaws 1-1 and 12 is a'stripper member 15, preferably carried by the latter, which serves to disengage the knife or punching element 13 from the article punched thereby facilitating its removability. The lower jaw member 12 carries also a locating plate 16 having an opening 17 similar to or larger than the aperture 14 to permit the knife 13 to pass therethrough and be engaged by the opening in the jaw 12 and thus complete a punching operation.

It has been found desirable in the filing of papers to punch the sheets and fasten them together with a suitable fastener and in order to create a neat appearance and to preserve the paper in the various files. as long'as possibleit is necessary to accurately locate the punch in a predetermined'position on the papers so that when punched and fastened together their edges will be aligned. I To'this end, I. have formed the locating plate 16 with upturned edges 18 and19 and secured it preferably to the lower "jaw of the punching tool whereby the sheet may "be inserted until its edges strike the abutments 18 and 19 formed by the upturned edges of the plate, and in this manner each sheet may be perforated the required distance from'its edges'and uniformity in the punched sheets is attained.

Fig. 5 illustrates an alternative method of removably attaching the locating plate to the jaw of the punch as by means of a set screw 22. However, any other suitable means may be employed for securing the plate to the tool or the locating device may be formed integral therewith if desired.

lVithout further analysis, the foregoing will so fully reveal the gist of this invention that others can, by applying current knowledge, rear ily adapt it for various utilizations by retaining one or more'of the features that, from the standpoint of the prior art, fairly constitute essential characteristics of either the'generic or specific aspects of this invention and, therefore, such adaptations should be, and are intended to be, comprehended within the meaning and range ofequivalency of the following claims.

aving thus revealed this invention, I claim new and desire to secure the following combinations andelements, or equivalents thereof, by Letters Patent of the United States l 1. A material locating device for a perforating tool of the plier type combining-perforating elements; and a sheet of metal having upturned material locating edge portions, disposed atan angle of substantially 90 and diverging outwardlyfrom a point in the general plane of the jaws rearwardly of the perforating elements.

2. A hand punch of the plier type combining a pair of j aw. members; a pair of die elements carried by said jaw members; means to effect relative movement of said die'elements;

and a plate member carried by one of said jaw members and provided with abutments diverging outwardly from a point lying substantially in the plane of the major axis of the jaw members and rearwardly of the die elements and adapted definitely to locate the article to be punched with respect to the die elements.

6. A locating device adapted to be secured to a hand punch of theplier type comprising a sheet of bendable material having upturned edge portions angularly disposed, said edge portions radiating from a common center located rearwardly of the punch elements on a line coincident with the general plane of the jaws, and means for rigidly attaching said sheet to one of the jaws of a hand punch in a predetermined position.
