IMPROVEMENT m RAKES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 180,398, dated July 25, 1876; application filed July 31, 1873.
To a. whom it may concern Be it known that 1, R. P. WALKER, of Dansville, in the county of Ingham and State ofMiehigan, have invented an Improvement in Rakes, of which the following is a specification:
This invention has for its object to so construct and apply the braces to the handle and head of a hay-rake as that the latter will be better enabled to resist lateral strains; and it consists in the peculiar conformation and application of two curved iron braces to the head and handle, as more fully hereinafter set forth.
1n the drawing, A represents the head of a hay-rake,armed with the teeth a, and in which is mortisedthe handle B. C (J are two curved iron braces, each of which is inserted horizontally through the handle to its middle. It is then bent forward and hammered flat against each side of the handle for a short distance; thence curved outwardly to the head and hammered flat against its inner side, extending toward the end; thence passed through a hole in the head and hammered flat against its face, or clinched, as shown in the drawing; The braces being in this manner clamped firmly to the handle andthe rake-head, the latter is held firmly at right angles to the former, and prevented from twisting off the tenon of the handle by lateral torsion.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with the handle B and head A of a rake, of the braces U 0, arranged, bent, and secured as described.
