IMPROVEMENT IN SPINNING ATTACHMENTS FOR SEWING-MACHINES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 180,387, dated July 25, 1876; application filed December 9, 1875.

To all ahom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JULIA E.- SNAPP, of Georgetown, in the county of Vermillion, and

in the State of Illinois, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Spinning Attachments for Sewing-Machines; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a spinning attachment for sewing-machines, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing the spinning device attached to a sewingmachine. Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing a reel attached to the sewing-machine for reeling off the yarn. Figs. 3 and 4 are enlarged perspective views of the parts of my invention.

The object of my invention is to spin yarn, 870., on an ordinary sewing-machine; and to this end I employ the spooler or bobbin-winder usually found on such machines.

In the drawing I have represented a fHowe machine, upon which my attachment is used; but it may be used on any of the well-known sewing-machines with but little, if any, change in form.

a represents the spooler-spindle of theHowe machine, upon which is fastened a hollow tapering spindle, A, provided at its base with a set-screw, 'b, for fastening it on said spoolcrspindle.

The spoolerspindle a is rotated by connecting it with the fiy-wheel B in the usual manner. The belt of the machine is to be thrown off and the treadle then worked, which rapidly revolves the spindle A, so that cotton, yarn, 850., may be spun thereon. When the spindle A is full it is removed from the spooler-spindle a, and a reel, 13, is placed on said spindle a, and the spindle A, with the yarn, is placed to the right of the operator, on a spindle, d, projecting from an ordinary clamp, O, which may be fastened to a table, stand, or other convenient place.

By these means spinning of any kind may be done with any sewing-machine.

In combination with the pitman, fly-wheel, and spooler spindle a of a sewing machine, the spindle A or reel B, provided with socket on its end, and held to said shaft by the setscrew b, as and for the purposes herein set forth.
