Patented Apr. 7, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT oEFlcE THOMAS P.. cooxs'roN, or ELYRIA, omo, AssIGNoB or ONE-HALF To wrmanlvi` e. WISE, or AKRON, oHIo i y BURIAL VAULT `1 Application filed October 24, 1929. Serial` No. 402,063.
This invention relates to burial vaults.
The general purpose of the invention is to provide a burial vault which will be highly resistant to deterioration and which will not permit the ingress of water thereinto.
More particularly the invention has for its object the provision of a burial vault preierably of a plastic material such as concrete suitably reinforced and having a sheet metal 1o lining preferably of non-corrodible metal such as copper and an improved seal between lthe bottom and top of the vault to prevent seeping of water therein.`
The foregoing and other objects of the invention are attained in the vault illustrated in the accompanying drawings and described below. It is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific form thereof shown and described.
Of the accompanying drawings,
Figurel is a side elevation partly in section of a vault embodying the invention;
Figure 2 is a section on line 2 2 of Figure 1; and.
of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, the numerals 1() and `11 represent the bottom and top respectively of a vault which may be constructed of a plastic material such as concrete suitably reinforced as at 12, 12. Both bottom and top are lined with sheet metal which preferably is non-corrodible, for example, copper, the lining, which is indicated at 131 and l?)b respectively on the bottom and top, be-
ing interlocked with. the concrete by any of a number of known methods to provide an integral structure.
To provide an effective joint between the bottom and the top, the former is formed with a groove 14 about its perimeter, the inner wall of which may be substantially perpendicular and the outer wall of which is inclined toward the outer edge of the bottom, the sheet metal of the .lining being folded about the perimeter of the bottom to define the groove, the marginal portions 13c of the linings 13a being. preferably bent downwardly and inwardly at the outer edges of the bottom and Figure 3 is an enlarged section on line 3 3 embedded in the plastic of the bott-om during manufacture thereof.
'l' he top 1l is provided with a downwardly extending flange 15 which may constitute the marginal portions of the lining 13" doubled and bent downmirdly about the perimeter of the top and adapted to engage in `groove l1 of the bottom in close relation to the inner wall thereof, the iiange `15 preferably being perpendicular tocooperate with the inner wall of said groove and to leave aspace in `the groove all about the joint.
The top and bottom may be so constructed that the top `seats on the bottom as at 16 with the flange 15 in the groove 14 and the top' is of such dimensions thatthe top` of groove 1t will be left open or exposed when the top is seated on the bottom. This permits of easy and effective scaling ofthe box which may be accomplished by filling the groove 14 with solder or other suitable sealing metal or material to permanently seal the joint againstseepageof water therethrough.`
It will be apparent from the foregoing that a burial vault has been provided which for all practical purposes will be permanent and indestructible. Obviously modifications of the invention may be resorted to without de parting from the spirit of the invention or from the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A burial vault comprising a bottoni and top formed of plastic material each provided with a lining of non-corrosive metal, the body being formed with a groove about its perimeter and the marginal portion of the lining for the bottom being formed to provide a lining for said groove and to provide a portion extending about the outer corners of the bottom and downwardly and inwardly into the plastic material forming said bottom, said top being of such dimensions that when applied to the bottom its edges are adjacent the inner wall of said groove, the marginal portion of the lining on the top having a portion forming a downwardly extending fiange adapted to extend into said groove adjacent the inner wall thereof whereby when the top is applied to the bottom the groove will be open about the vault, said groove being filled with a solder to seal the linings of the vault together. o 2. A burial vault comprising a bottom and top formed of plastic material each provided with a lining of non-*corrosive metal, the body being .formed with agroove about-its perimeter and the marginal portion t ofthe lining for the bottom being'tormed to provide a lining for saidgroove and to provide a portion-'extending VVaboiitthe outer corners of the bottom7 said top being of such dimensions Ythat when applied to the bottom its edges are adjacent thevnner wall of said groove, the marginal portion of the lining on the top having a portion forminga downwardly extending -lange adapted lto extend into said groove adjacent the inner wall thereof wherebywhenthe top is applied to thebottovmthe groove vwill be open about the vault, said groovebeing lilled with a solder to seal the linings ofthe vault together.
3. A burial Vault Comprising a bottom and top Aformed of plastic material each provided with a lining of non-Corrosive metal, the
body being formed with a groove about its perimeter and the marginal portion of the lining Ifor the .bottom being formed to providea liningfor said groove7 saidtop being o' such dimensions that when applied to the bottom it-s edges` are adjacent the inner .wall
of said groove, the marginal portion of? the lining ,on rthe top having a portion forming f a downwardly extending flange adapted to extend into said groove acentvther inner f5 wall thereof whereby when the top is lapplied to the bottom the groove will be open about the vault, said groove being lilled with a solder toseal the linings of thev vault together.
