SWITCVH Filed July 15, 1929 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Patented Apr. 7, 1931 i I v UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE RUFUS DUNN, OI WINCHESTER, KENTUCKY SWITCH Application filed July 15, 1929.- Serlal No. 878,478.
This invention relates to an electric switch Figure 6 is a perspective view of one of the adapted to be used with a door, the general spring terminal members. object of the invention being to provide a ro- Figure 7 is a view of the spring for the tary member having four projections thereon rotary membe arrangedaquarter turn from each other, with Figure 8 is a perspective view of the trip 51;
a pair of bridging strips on the member and its supporting bracket. through which a pair of pins, the members of In these views, the numeral 1 indicates a which are diametrically opposite each other, base of nonconducting material and 2 indipass, whereby when an arm is engaged by a cates a casing suitably attached to the'base trip on a door which is being opened, the roand having an opening 3 in its lower front 60 tary member will be moved a quarter turn to part. A rotary member 4, of cylindrical place one of the contact strips in a position to shape, is rotatably supported in the casing bridge two members of a circuit so as to close by the brackets 5 which are fastened to the the circuit, the trip being so constructed that base, and this member 4 is also formed of the door can be closed without operating the non-conducting material. The rotary mem- 66 member and then when the door is again ber carries four pins 6 which are arranged a opened, the member will be moved another quarter turn from each other and it also quarter turn so as to break the circuit. Thus carries a pair of bridging strips 7 and 7' by opening the door the first time, the circuit which are diametr cally opposite each other is completed andwhen the door is opened the nd are embedded 1n the member, and two of 7 second time, the circuit is broken. The inthe pins pass through these. bridging memvention is useful for controllingthe circuit h r he pms Wlll pass through the openof a lamp in a cellar where a person entering g 3 g' h rotary movement 0 the the cellar will open the door and close the member- I circuit of the lamp, after which the door is ar Wheel 8 1s attached to one of the closed. Then when the person leaves the .g 9 the rotary member. and g g cellar, as he opens the door the second time, y a pring 9 attached to the base, this springl th i it i b k and star wheel acting to frictionally hol I This invention also consists in certain other the rotary member against movement and features of construction and in the combinaalso flctmg fimsh the movement of the so tion and arrangement of the several parts, to m raft r It has beenin1tial1y move s be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in that the member will always cometo rest the accompanying drawings and specifically with two of the pins in a vertical position pointed out in the appended claim. 1 and the other two in a horizontal position.
In describing the invention in detail, ref- A vpair of spring contacts 10 is fastened to erence will be had t t aoc mpa ymg the base, with their free ends rounded, as ings wherein like characters denote hke or Shown t 11 d engaging th rotary i 9 P g Rafts 01 g Several ber. These contacts are connected by the Y h 1 conductors 12 which form portion'of a cirgh 1 1s anew P y In Sectlon, sjhowlngv cuit for a lamp or the like. As will be seen, the switch member apfilied to the casing of a. the parts are so arranged that When the door and the tn on t 9 door rotary member is moved to a position with J2 5:3 3; g ai 33; with part of the one of the bridging members uppermost,
a said bridging member will engage the 5 g g fii i ig igf ggg ig f m rounded parts 11 of the contactslO and thus P Figure 4 is a top plan View of the switc complete the circuit, but when the bridging device with the casing in Section members are in a horizontal plane, the conh th tacts 10 e a e the insulated of the gg g gg l m Sectlont rough e rotary mem i and thus the circuitisbroken. - ber, pins carried by the cylindrical member,
A bracket 13 is fastened to the door 14, member for imparting rotary movement to the base 1 being fastened to the frame 15, the cylindrical member when the movable and this bracket carries a pivoted trip 16 member is moved in one direction.
which is so arranged that when the door is opened, it will engage the depending pin 6, thus rotating the member 4 a quarter turn. When the door is closed, the trip will simply pivot on the bracket and not turn the member 4. The parts should be so arranged that when the door is first opened and the rotary member turned a quarter turn, one of the bridging strips will be brought in engagement with the contacts 10 and thus close the circuit. Then, as before stated,
the door can be closed without breaking the circuit. When the door is'opened a second time, the rotary member will be turned to a position where the bridging strip is moved out of engagement with the contacts 10 and the circuit is broken. Thus upon the first opening of the door, the circuit is'closed and when the door is opened a second time, the circuit is broken. As before stated, this device is useful on a cellar door and permits a person to close the circuit of a lamp in the cellar when he first opens the door and then when he leaves the cellar and opens the door a second time, he will close the circuit so that there is no danger of one forgetting to open thecircuit of a lamp in the cellar when he leaves the same. Ofcourse, the invention can be used for other purposes.
Besides being useful forcontrolling the circuit of a lamp in a cellar, the invention can be also used for controlling the'circuit of a lamp in. a bathroom, toilet or any other place where such invention would be useful.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be" readily apparent.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combina- ,tion and arrangement of the several parts,
rically opposite points thereon, pins passing through the strips into the cylindrical memand arranged a quarter turn from the other pins, a circuit, including a pair of contact members, connected with the base and engaging the cylindrical member whereby said contacts will be bridged by the conductor strips during the rotation of the cylindrical memberand atrip parton the movable member for engaging the pins on the cylindrical I afix my signature.
