This invention relates to improvements in drilling machines, and machines for other purposes, in which the work is carried'by a travelling carrier successively to a plurality of stations at certain of which it is operated 7 upon by tools, such as drills, countersinks, reamers, and the like. Usual machines of this character comprise a rotating table which is intermittently moved to position the work at the successive stations, tool carriers being located at such stations out of the path of work, either above the path of movement of beyond the periphery of the table. In such cases the tools are moved axially toward the work to act upon it and having erformed their operations are again removed beforethe table is rotated to advance the work to the next station. While such machines enable operations to be performed u on the top of the work and upon the outer si e of the P work, they are not adapted to resent the tool to the work within the path ollowed by the work as it is moved from station to station. In many instances it is desirable to drill,
' bore, or otherwise treat, the front face of the -work, that is to say,
the face of the work which is presented 1n the direction of its movement. One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a reciprocable f0lfca1= o the rier adapted to be moved into and on path of the work in timed relation to the intermittent movement of the table so that it will act upon the front face of the work as above described.
A further object of the invention is to pro vide means for automatically moving a reciprocable tool carrier into operative position conjointly the locking of the travelling carrier at the tool station.
A further object of the invention is to provide means automatically'operable to prevent the feeding of the tool of the reciprocating tool holder and preferably to prevent the feeding of any tool to the work until the reciprocating tool carrier located in its operative position with respect "to the work.
A further object of the invention is to provide automatic means, preferably hydrauliwith, or in timed relation to,

In order to avoid-possibility of injury to the tools or work, or inaccuracy in the operation of the tools, means desirably are also provided for preventing the actuation of the tool-feeding means until all of the reciprocable tool carriers have been accurately located in operative position.
A preferred embodiment of thepresent invention is illustrated herein as applied to the drilling machine disclosed in my fiprior application Serial Number 171,316 led February 26, 1927, which discloses in detail va-. rious features of the machine to which the resent invention is applied. In fact the specific embodiment of the invention illustrated herein may be of an attachment to that machine. It will, however, be understood that it may be applied to any other types of machines to which it is adapted within the meaning and scope of the claims.

The machine also comprises a central hollow column 5 which is mounted upon and rises from the base and carries a series of brackets, preferably comprising pairs of arms 6 which are spaced apart and are each provided with atwo-part annular clamp in the form of internally grooved members 7 and 8 in which are seated rings which also engage grooves 9 in the periphery of the column. The outer ends of the arms 6 are connected by a hollow vertical post 10 to which a toolcarrying frame is connected in such a manner that it may be adjusted relatively to the bracket. Any number of such brackets and tool-carrying frames may be provided as may be re uired for the work to be done at several o the difierent stations and a description of one will serve as a description for all.
In the construction illustrated the toolcarrying frame comprises a vertical guide bar 11 having arms 12 provided with semi-circular recesses which engage the post 10 and complementary semi-circular members 13 which clamp the members 12 upon the post so that the tool-carrying framecan be adjusted about the vertical axis of the post. The tool-carrying frame preferably is provided with a laterall flanged, vertical dove-tail ide 15 which is engaged by complementary ove-tail grooves upon a tool carrier 16. A tool slide 17 is reciprocably mounted in the tool carrier and is provided with a laterally extending lug'having upon it a cam follower 18 which is engaged by a feeding cam 19 rotatably mounted upon a stud 20 projecting from the wall of the tool carrier. The toolfeeding cam is actuated by a worm and worm gear from a vertical shaft 21 which is actuated from the shaft 22 of an electric motor 23 through suitable clutch mechanism includ ing a hydraulic clutch contained in a casing 24 and through reducing gearing in a casing 25 which transmits rotation to a shaft 26 which is journalled in the head 27 of the column 5 and engages a gear 28 which is rotatably mounted upon the central shaft,
Shafts, extending radially from the post, are connected by suitable flexible couplings and suitable gears to the shafts 21 which actuate ically and hydraulically controlled clutch contained in a casing32 which serves to rotate a shaft 33 having on its inner end a beveled pinion which engages a suitable bevel gear 34 (see Fig. 2) upon a shaft 35 which extends axially downwardly through the central column 5 and actuates suitable gearing to cause the rotation of the table in the manner fully described in the heretofore mentioned.
Suitable means are provided for arresting the rotation of the table with the work supporting members located approximately at their proper positions.
Preferably at each station means are provided for positioning and locking the work supporting means. In the particular 'con-, struction illustrated such locking and positioning means comprises recessed brackets 36 depending from the. respective work supports, the recesses of which present undercut inclined walls 37 having V-shaped' grooves adapted to be engaged by complementary members 38 upon the head of a plunger 39 of a hydraulic piston which is reciprocably mounted in a cylinder 40.
In this construction, as in that disclosed in my prior application, a common controlling mechanism is provided for the various operating parts of the machine, this controlling mechanism, as illustrated, being a hydraulic system employing oil as a circulating fluid, with means to arrest the circulation of the fluid in such a manner as to build up pressure in the conduits for the fluid so that the pressure may be utilized to actuate the hydraulic mechanisms, such mechanisms being released upon release of pressure in the conduit.
The mechanism for accomplishing this purpose illustrated in the accompanying drawings comprises a pump'41 which is driven by an electric motor 42 and has an intake conduit 43 leading to the reservoir 44in the base of the machine. A delivery or pressure conduit 45 leads from the motor to a chamber 46 in the upper end of the central column 5 of the machine and the oil, which is discharged into the column, descends down prior application' iis The arm 50 is connected by a link 51 to one arm 52 of a bell crank lever, the other arm 53' of which is connected to a link having at 56 is provided with its lower end a hook 54 adapted to be engaged by a complementary hook 55jwhich is piv0tally connected to a lever 56 fulcrumed at one end upon a suitable stud 57 projecting from a bracket 58. The opposite end of the lever an inclined or cam face 59 adapted to be. engaged by a pin 60 upon one of the tool feeding cams 19 and operable when so engaged, with the hooks 54 and 55 in engagement, to actuate the bell crank lever and through the link 51 to actuate the rock shaft in a direction to remove the valve 48 from its seat and thereby release the pressure in the delivery or pressure pipe. When the pressure is thus relieved the machine isrendered inoperative with the parts in the position illustrated in Fig. 1. The mechanism thus described may be and is identical with that disclosed in my prior application No. 171,316 above mentionedin which all of the tool carriers are located out of the path of movement of the work upon the rotating work table. r
The present invention comprises the addition to it or, a machine having similar mechanisms, of a reciprocable tool carrier atone or more of the tool stations which is movable into and out of the path of the work, with means for moving the tool into operative position within the path of the work while the -work is stationary at the tool station and for moving the tool carrier from the path of the j work before the work is advanced toward the next station. Preferably means are provided which operate con ointly to lock the carrier with the work positioned at the station and.
to reciprocate the tool holder to operative position.
Means also desirably are provided for causing the actuation ofthe tool feeding means when the toolcarrier has been movedto oper ative position. Desirably also means are provided for preventing the actuation of the tool feeding means unless and until the reciprocating tool carrier has been properly positioned. If a plurality of reciprocating tool carriers are employed means are provided for preventing the actuation of the tool feeding means unless and until all of the reciprocating tool carriers are properly positioned.
Any suitable means may be employed'to accomplish these and other purposes of the invention of the claims. In the particular embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawings,

Preferably means are provided to permit vertical adjustment of the bracket so that at any desirable distance above the table. The bearing 66' for the shaft of the tool, with the head which contains the gears 63 and 64 and in which the gear chuck 61 is mounted, projects beyond the end of the tool slide 71 and carrier 74 sufficiently to enable the tool to be carried into the path of the work a suflicient distance to engage any portion of the face of the work.
' ny suitable means may be provided for reciprocating the tool carrier, which may be considered to include not only the carrier 74, but the tool slide 71 and the bearing 66 with its tool-carrying head, into and out of the path of the work. In the preferred construction illustrated herein the mechanism comprises hydraulic means which, as illus-- trated, consists of a cylinder 79 which is mounted between webs 80 of the bracket 78,
with a piston'81 reciprocable in said cylinder having a piston rod 82 connected to a plate 83 which is secured to and depends from the end of the carrier plate 74. A branch pipe 84 leads from the cylinder 79 to the pipe 85 which leads from the pressure pipe 45 to the cylinders 40 of the hydraulic locking mech anism heretofore described. When, therefore, the valve 48 in the fluid pressure system is closed the pressure, which is built up in the pressure pipe 45, will be transmitted to the cylinder 79 and will force the piston inwardly toward the base of the machine, causing the pistonrod the sliding carrier 74 toward the base of the machine and thereby moving the tool carrier into the path of the work.
Suitable means are, of course, provided to limit the movement of the tool carrier so that the tool will be properly' positioned. This may be accomplished by providing a boss 86, upon the base of the machine, which extends upwardly into the path of the carrier plate 74, with seated in said boss adapted to engage the end of the carrier plate 74 and limit the movea universal joint 67 and sliding The under side of the 82 and plate 83 to force I an adjusting screw 87 positioned. By reason of this construction it will be obvious that when fluid pressure is built up in the pressure pipe 45 the fluid pressure will also be established in the pipe 85 leading to the hydraulic mechanism, thereby locking the table and the work carriers thereupon against rotation, and at the same time fluid pressure will be built up in the pipe 84 which will force the piston 81 inwardly in the cylinder 79, therebymoving the tool slide iuwardly until its movement is limited by the stop 87 with the tool properly positioned. In the present construction this fiuid pressure will be maintained untilthe completion of the operation of all the tools upon the work, whereupon release of fluid pressure will permit the weight 88 to withdraw the tool slide from operative position.
Any suitable means may be provided for moving the toolslide to move the tool into and out-of engagement with the work. In the construction illustrated this is accomplished by a cam, which may be similar to the cams 19 which feed the other tools of the machine toward and from the work. As shown herein a U-shaped bracket 93 is mounted upon the'carrier plate 74 and is provided with a central boss 94 in which the upper end of a vertical shaft 95 is journalled, the lower end of the shaft being journalled in a suitable bearing in the carrier plate 74.
I The tool feeding cam 96 is fixedly secured to the shaft 95 and engages the flat vertical surface of the bearing 66 for the tool actuating shaft 65. A spiral gear 97, which is secured to the shaft 95, is actuated by a complementary spiral pinion 98 upon a shaft 99 the lower portion of which is journalled in a boss 100 extending upwardly from the U-shaped bracket 93. The shaft 99 is connected by a universal telescopic sliding joint 101 witha shaft 102 which is mounted in a bearing 103 carried by a bracket 104 which is mounted upon the central column 5. The shaft 102 is provided with a beveled gear 105 which is driven by a complementary beveled pinion 106 upon a horizontal shaft 107 having at its opposite end a beveled pinion 108 which engages the gear 28 which actuates all of the other tool feeding mechanisms of the machine. as herein described,
and as more fully appears from my prior application mentioned herein.
It will be remembered that the tool feeding mechanism for all of the tools is controlled by the hydraulically operable clutch mechanism contained in the casings 24 and 25. This clutch mechanism is actuated to cause the feeding of the tools upon the building up of pressure in the pressure pipe 45 of the controlling system, and the pressure 1n the pressure pipe 45 is relieved at the end of the operation of a selected tool by the engagement of the pin 60 upon the selected tool feeding cam 19 with the inclined cam face 59 of the lever 56, thereby causing the lever 56, acting through. the interengaged hooks 54 and 55, the bell-crank, the link 51, and rock shaft, to remove the valve 48 from its seat, and permit the liquid to flow freely into the column 5. As-heretofore stated, it is desirable that the tool feedingmechanism shall be prevented from operation unless and until the reciprocating tool carriers are properly located in operative position.
Any suitable means, preferably electrically operated, may be provided for preventing the actuation of the clutch, which is contained in the clutch box 24, to cause the actuation of the tool feeding cams. In the present construction a special electrically operated valve is provided in the branch 109 which leads from the pressure pipe 45 to the hydraulically operated clutch in the box 24. This special valve is illustrated in Fig. 5 and comprises a valve casing 110 with which the branch pipe 109 is connected, the casing being provided with a closed cylindrical conduit 111 having oppositely disposed ports 112 and-113 which are conically tapered upwardly. The valves 114 and 115 are seated in these valve ports and are normally held in closed position by a light spring 116. A valve stem 117, which is common to both valves, extends through a bushing 118 and packing gland 119 and is connected to the core 120 of a solenoid 121. The circuit 122 of the solenoid is controlled by a series of switches 123, the movable member 124 of which is in the path of the reciprocating tool carrier, or a suitable member thereof, and is so positioned that the movable switch members will be moved to close the switch and permit the operation of the mechanisms in sequence only when the tool carrier is properly positioned relatively to the work. By reason of this construction the valves 114 and 115 will remain closed until the switches 123 are all closed, whereupon the solenoid will withdraw the valves from the position illustrated in Fig. 5 and permit the fluid under pressure to flow through the ports,112 and 113 into the secreciprocating tool carriers actuation hi the table turning mechanism. It will be noted that the valves 114 and 115 comprise a balance valve as the under surface of the valve 114 is of slightly larger area than the upper surface of the valve 115. Thus the valve is very easily operated by the solenoid construction illustrated.
In the operation, therefore, of the device the actuation of will be prevented unless and until all of the are properly located in operative position. v In the construction disclosed in the prior application the release of the pressure uponthe opening of the valve serves to initiate the action of-the table turning mechanism.
In the meantime,-however, the tool carrying slides will have been removed from the path of the work so that the work table is free to rotate as soon as the table turning mechanism comes into operation. The table, therefore, will be rotated to position the next piece of work at the successive tool station when the machine will remain at rest until the valve 48 is closed manually by pulling the lever 126 to cause the engagement of the hooks 53 and 54 as above described.
It will be understood that the embodiment of the invention disclosed herein is of an illustrative character and is not restrictive, and that various changes in form, construction and arrangement of parts maybe of the fol- I Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a machine of the class described comprising a movable work carrier, means for fixedly securing the work to said carrier, means for intermittently moving the work carrier to present the work at a tool station, I a tool carrier at said tool station, means for moving said tool carrier toward and away from the axis of the work'carrier into and out of the path of the work, and means for feeding the tool to and from the work.
2. In a machine of the class described comprising a movable work carrier, means for fixedly securing the work to said carrier, means for intermittently moving the work carrier to present the work at a tool station, a tool carrier at said tool station, means for moving the tool carrier toward and away from the axis of the work carrier lIliJO' and out of the path of the work, means for locking the tool carrier in operative position with respect to the work, and means for feeding the tool to and from the work.
3. In a machine of the class describedcomprising a movable work carrier, means for fixedly securmg the work to said carrler, means for intermittently moving the work carrier to present the work at a tool station,
a'reciprocable tool carrier at said tool stathe tool feeding mechanism station and to move said tool holder to operative position into the path of the work, and means for feeding the tool to and from the work.
4. In a machine of the class described comprising a movable work carrier, means for intermittently moving the same to present the work at a tool station, a reciprocable tool carrier at said tool station movable into and out of the path of the work, means for feeding said tool to and from the work and means conjointly operable to lock said carrier with the tool positioned at said station to move the tool holder to operative position and to cause the actuation of said feeding means;
5. In a machine of the class described comprising a movable work carrier,'means for intermittently moving the same to present the work at a tool station, a reciprocable tool carrier at said tool station movable into and out of the path of the work, means for feeding said tool to and from .the work, means conjointly operable to lock said carrier, with the tool positioned at said station to move the tool holder to operative position and to cause the actuation of said feeding means and means for preventing the actuation of said tool feeding meansunless the reciprocable tool carrier is correctly located in operative position.
6. In a machine of the class described comprisin a rotatable work carrier, a plurality of wor su ports mounted upon said carrier, but movabfe relatively thereto, means for actuating said carrier to move said work suports successively to a tool station, means at said tool station forpositioning and locking said work supports accurately irrespective of the correct position of said carrier, a reciproeating tool holder at said tool station movable into and out of operative position in the path of the work and means automatically operable conjointly to actuate said work support positioning and locking means and v to move said tool carrierto, and to retain the same in, operative position.
7. In a machine of the class described comprising a rotatable work carrier, a plurality of work supports mounted upon said carrier, but movable relatively thereto, means for actuating said carrier to move said work supports successively to a tool station,
means at said tool station for positioning and locking said work supports accurately irrespective of the correct position of said carrier, a reciprocating tool holder at said tool station movable into and out of operative position in the path of'the work and hydraulic means conjointly operable to actuate said work support positioning and locking means and to move said tool carrier to,
and to retain the same in, operative position.
8. In a machine of the class described comprising a rotatable work table, a plurality of work supporting members mounted on said table and movable relatively thereto,
' means for rotating said table intermittently to present said work supporting members successively at different tool stations, means for locking the work supporting membersaccurately at each station irrespective of the correct position of the carrier, tools atcertain of said tool stations located out of the path of movement of the work, a reciprocable tool carrier at a tool station movable into and out of the path of the work and means operable automatically to actuate said work support positioning and locking means and to move-said tool carrier to operative position.
9. In a machine of the class described comprising a rotatable work table, a plurality of Work supporting members mounted on said table and movable relatively thereto, means for rotating said table intermittently to present said work supporting members successively at different tool stations, means for locking the work supporting members accurately at each station irrespective of the said reciprocable tool carrier ,to operative correct position of the carrier, tools at certain of said tool stations located out of the path of movement of the work, a reciprocable tool carrier at a tool station movable into and out of the path of the Work, means for feeding the tools simultaneously and means operable automatically to actuate said work support positioning and locking means, to move position and to cause the actuation of said tool feeding means.
10. In a machine of the class described comprising a rotatable work table, a plurality of work supporting members mounted on said table and movable relatively thereto,
means for rotating said table intermittently to present said work supporting members successively at different tool stations, means for locking the work supporting members accurately at each station irrespective of the correct position of the carrier, tools at certain of said tool stations located out of the path of movement of the work, a reciprocable tool carrier at a tool station movable into and out of the path of the work, means for feeding the tools simultaneously and means operable automatically to actuate said work sup port positioning and locking means, to move said reciprocable tool carrier to operative reciprocable tool carrier at said station movplurality of tool stations, tool carriers at certain of said stations, located out of the path .of the work, reciprocable tool carriers at other stations movable into and out of operative position within thepath of the work, hydraulic means automatically operable to move the latter into operative position and means operable by said hydraulic means to prevent actuation of said table-rotating means while said reciprocating tool carriers are in operative position and means for actuating said tools.
13. In a machine of the class described comprising a rotatable work supporting table, means for intermittently rotating the same to present the work successively at a plurality of tool stations, tool carriers at certain of said stations, located out of the path of the work, reciprocable tool carriers at other stations movable'into and out of operative position within the path of the work, hydraulic means automatically operable to move the latter into operative position and means operable by said hydraulic means to prevent actuation of said table-rotating means while said reciprocating tool carriers are in operative position, means for feeding the tools to the work and means operable by said hydraulic means for preventing actuation of said tool feeding means unless all of said reciprocating tool carriers are properly. located in operative position.
14;. In a machine of the class described comprising a rotatable work supporting table, means for rotating the same intermittently to present the work successively to a plurality of tool stations, a reciprocable tool carrier at one of said tool stations'movable into and out of operative position within the path of the work, means for feeding the tool to and from the work, means operable conj'ointly to lock the work table With the work positioned at said station to move said reciprocable tool carrier to operative position and to cause the actuation of said tool feeding means.
15. In a machine of the class described comprising a rotatable work supporting table, means for rotating the same intermittently to present the work successively to a plurality of tool stations, a reciprocable tool carrier at one of said toolstations movable into and out of operative position within the path of the work, means for feeding the tool to and from the work, hydraulic means having a common pressure supplying conduit operable conjointly to lock said work table, with the work'positioned at said station, to move said'reciprocating tool carrier to operative position and retain the same in operative position and to cause the actuation of said tool feeding means.
16. In a machine of the class described comprising a rotatable work supporting table, means for rotating the same intermittently to present the work successively toa plurality of tool station s, a reciprocable tool carrier at one of said tool stations movable into and out of operative position within the path of the work, means for feeding the tool to and from the work, means operable conjointly to lock the work table with the work positioned at said station to move said reciprocable tool carrier to operative position and to cause the actuation of said tool-feeding means and means for preventing actuation of said feeding means unless the reciprocable tool carrier is properly located in operative position.
17. In a machine of comprising a rotatable work supporting table, means for rotating the same intermittently to present the work successively to a plurality of tool stations, a reciprocable tool'carrier at one of said stations movable into and out of operative position in the path of the work, means for feeding the tool, hydraulically operable -means for moving said tool carrier to, and retaining the same in, operative position, an hydraulically operable clutch mechanism for causing the actuation'of said feeding means, a conduit for fluid under pressure having branches leading to the respective hydraulically operable means, a valve in the branch of said conduit leading to said hydraulically operable clutch, and valve-controlling means operable by the reciprocable tool carrier only when in operative position to open said valve and thereby to cause the actuationbf the tool-feeding clutch.

In a machine of the class described comprising a rotatable work supporting table, means for tently to present the work successively to a plurality of tool stations, a plurality of tool carriers at certain of said stat-ions, movable into and out of position in the path of the work, means for feeding the tools, hydraulically operable means for work supporting table at each station, hydraulically operable means for moving said tool carrier to operative position and hydraulically operable clutch mechanism for causing the actuation of said tool-feeding means, a conduit for fluid under pressure having branches leading to the respective .into and out of position in the the class described rotating the same intermitlocking the hydraulically operable means, a valve in the 19. In a "machine of the class described comprising a rotatable work supporting table, means for rotating the same intermittently to present the work successively to a plurality of tool stations, a plurality of tool carriers at certain of said stations, movable into and out of position in the path of the work, means for feeding the tools, hydraulically operable means for locking the work supporting table at each station, hydraulically operable means for moving said tool carrier to operative position and hydraulically operable clutch mechanism for causing the "erable means, a valve in the branch of said conduit leading to said hydraulically operable clutch, and valve-controlling means comprising a solenoid connected to said valve and a circuit for said solenoid having nor-v mally open switches and means operable by the respective reciprocable tool carriers to close said switches, whereby said circuit will only be completed when all tool carriers are properly-located in operative position.

In a machine of the class described comprising a movable work carrier having a plurality of work-supporting means, a plurality of tool stations, reciprocating tool carriers at the respective tool stations, means for intermittently moving the work carrier to present the work successively to .the respective tool stations,
carriers are properly lomeans for feeding the 4 tools toand .from the Work, and means for preventing eifective actuation of the machine unless all the tools are properly positioned relatively to the work including an electric circuit having switches positioned to be op: erated by the movement of the respective tool carriers to complete the circuit only when the tool carriers are properly located in operative position, and means operable by the electric circuit when completed to cause the actuation of the tool-feeding means.

In a machine of the class described comprising a movable work carrier having a plurality of work-supporting means, a plurality of tool stations, reciprocating tool carriers at the respective tool stations, means for intermittently moving the work carrier to present the work successively to the respective tool stations, means for feeding the toolsto and from the work, hydraulically operable means for controlling the tool positioning and tool-feeding means, and means for preventing effective actuation of the machine unless all the toolsare properlypositioned relatively to the work, including an electric circuit having switches positioned to be operated by the movement of the respective tool carriers to complete the circuit only when the tool carriers are properly located in operative position, and means operable by the electric circuit when completed to cause the actuation of said hydraulically operable con trolling means.
