Description

STEERING DEVICE IN CHILDREN S WHEELED TOYS Filed July 14, 1950 Patented Apr. 7, 1931 J'OHANN ES RICHTER, OI BRANDENBURG-ON- THE-HAVEL, GERMANY, ASSIGNOR TO THE FIRM ERNST PAUL LEHMANN IPATENTWERK, F BRANDENBUR'G-ON-TEE-HAJVEL,
GERMANY, A COMPANY OF GERMANY STEERING DEVICE CHILDRENS WHEELED TOYS Application filed July 14, 1930, Serial No. 467,858, and in Germany August 24, 1 929.
The present invention relates to a steering device in childrens wheeled toys and has been schematically represented in the Fig-' ures 1-4 as an example of performance. Fig.
1 represents a top view, Figs. 2-4 show separate parts, whilst Figs. 5 and 6 illustrate a childs toy in the form of a cat as an example of a practical form of application.
The object of the present invention consists in attaining in a most simple manner complicated movements in childrens wheeled toys, particularly also in mechanically moving figures, for which purpose a curved disk, actuating the steering gear, has been designed as a section of the surface of a cylinder, be-
ing situated upon a disk supported by the splndle or axle of the drum and revolving with it. This latter disk suitably represents the main'driving wheel actuated by the drum axle in connection with which the main driving wheel transmits the the toy.
All parts which may be assumed to be known and which have no direct bearing upon the invention, have been omitted in the drawings. There is provided in this instance the drum axle 1 with drum 2 and spring 3. I The drum carries the crown wheel 4 actuating the drive wheels by means of the teeth 5. The crown wheel 4 is now made to support the previously mentioned curved disk 6 shaped like the surface of a cylinder. This'curved disk 6 is made to establish contact with the inner end of the lever 7, guided loosely at 8 and 9 and made to maintain contact by the acpower to the wheel of rotated by the wheel 4, cause the lever to be .moved in or out and thus variably steer the larly such as are in form of figures. The cylindrical form of the curved disk renders a particularly compact arrangement possible and allows of the application of such steering device or gear also in such cases, where it otherwise might not have been possible to install it.
I claim:
A steering device for toys running on wheels, said toy having the form of any desired figure and having drive wheels, a steering wheel within said toy figure, a driving mechanism for said drive wheels comprising a toothed wheel, a concave cam. diskin the shape of a piece of a cylinder on said toothed wheel, and means for transmitting the movement of said cam disk to said steering wheel.
In testimony whereof I have aifixed my signature.
JOHANNES RICHTER.
tion of a spring 10. The other end 11 of the lever is attached to a knee-shaped axle 12 extending in a downward direction, the spindle thereof being guided at 13 and being made to support the steering wheel 15 in a fork 14. The numeral 16 indicates the drive wheels in Figs. 5 and 6. The numerals 17, 18 and 19 represent a tripartite figure of a cat. Toy autos, ships and figures of any description may be equipped in an identical manner.
It will be obvious that the curved disc 6' will, by reason of-its-curvature, have a variable efiective over all diameter and will thus constitute a cam,'which, contacting constantly with the free end of the lever 7, 'will, when
