Description

April 7, 19341. i "R. L.. PARISH I 1,799,244
CONTAINER AND SEAIJING MEANS THEREFOR FiiedbNov, 1e, 192s i Patented lApr. 7, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE RICHARD L. PARIsII, or CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, AssIGNoRro AMERICAN ILANGE e MANUFACTURING ooMI'ANY, or CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION or ILLINOIS CONTAINER ANDISEALING 'MEANS THEREFOR Application filed November 16, 1928.- Serial No. 319,914.
f My invention relates to containers and sealing means therefor and has for its object the provision of means whereby a closure plug may be tightened after the sealing means is in i I place, but'may not be moved in an openingl direction to a suilicient extent to permit appreciable removal of the container contents.
A structure made in accordance with my invention is inclusive of an interiorly l threaded bushing assembled with a wall of the part which is clamped by the bushing flange f `between this flange and the'portion of said wall which is lapped bythis flange and a portion joined with said body portion and Fig; 4 is -an elevation ofthe structure as it` lapping the plug, but formed to permit application of a tightening tool vto the plug, the guard portion which -laps` the plu-g being sufliciently close'to the plug toiobstruct and prevent complete removal of the plugy from the bushing.
The invention will be more fully explained by reference to the accompanying drawing in which Fig. 1 is a face view of the preferred embodiment of the invention; Fig. 2 is4 a sectional view on line 2-2y of Fig. 1 on a larger scale; Fig. 3 is a face. view of the structure minus the plugand theplug lapping portion of the guard, parts being broken away; and
appears in Fig. 2, but the container wall in irregular cross section. v y The container, such as a metallic barrel, has one wall thereof, such as the sheet metal wall 1 formed with a depending rim 2 which surrounds a circular hole formed through this wall.- An interiorly threaded bushing 3 is snugly received within this hole and is closely" surrounded by said Trim, this bushing being shown with an outwardly curled inner edge.
portion 4 which grips the inner edge of said rim 2 and a circumscribing flange 5 which is tightly seated, this llange lapping the portion of this wall that surrounds the hole. The
vclosure plug 6 is screwed within the bushing l3 and is formed with a circumscribing flange 7 which laps the-bushing flange 5 and wall 1.
tool engaging formations, one in the form of an enlargement 8 which is of hexagonal or polygonal exterior contour, andthe other in the form of a recess 9 extending through the enlargement 8, this recess being of square or other non-circular contour to receive a wrench having a plug formation snugly receivable within and corresponding in shape to said recess. l
The -guard comprises an annular body portionlO havingia base part 11 which is clamped by the bushing flange between the flange and theportinA of said wall Awhich is lapped by this flange. The guard is inclusive of another annular1portion12 which is joined with the body portion and is provided with an annular hole 13 through which the tool engaging formation 8 outwardly extends to Vbe engageable by a plug tightening tool after parts are assembled as most clearly illustrated in- Fig. 2. A sealing gasket 14 is tightly clamped by the plug flange 7 between this flange and the bushing flange 5.
It' is manifest that when it is desired ,to remove the closure plug a tool may be used to unscrew it and that d 'ur'ing this operation -the guard becomes distorted and the upper portion' is torn from the lower portion. As' the lower portion has a flatpart clamped between the bushing flange and portion of the container wall which is lapped by'this flange it remains in place. VThus when the guard is destroyed by the removal of the closure plug a tell-tale remains and the guard cannot be fraudulently replaced.
'Having thus described my invention, I claim: i
l. The combinationlwith a container of theV class described with a hole through the Wall thereof; of a threaded bushing assembled with said wall in alignment with saidlhole, said bushing havinga flange which projects over the wall where the wall surrounds` the hole; ay-fthreaded closure plug screwed withinthe bore of the bushing and having wrenchreceiving means, and a guardcomprising a V The outerend of the plug is formed with two Inn i lower annulus portion having an annular flat part clamped between the bushing ange and the portion of said wall over which this flange projects and an upper cap portion separably connected to said lower portion and having a part lapping said closure. plug and an opening therein whereby a wrench may be applied to said wrench-receiving means for the purpose of tightening said closure plug without affecting .said guard and also for the purpose of removing the plug and at the .same time removing the upper portion of said guard` the lower portion remaining clamped in place as an irremovable tell-tale.
Q. The combination with a container' with a hole through the wall thereof; of a threaded bushing assembled through the Wall in alignment with said hole, said busliing having a flange which projects over the wall where the wall surrounds the hole; a threaded closure plug screwed within the bore of the bushing and having wrench receiving means; and a guard completely enclosing said flange and the top of said plug except for said wrench receiving means, said guard comprising a lower lnember having an annular portion which is permanently held between the bushing flange and the portion of said wall over which said flange projects, and an upper member connected to the lower member and lapping the plug but formed with a hole to permit 'application of a tightening tool to-the plug, the guard being destroyed by removal of thel closure plug while the portion of the lower member remains held in place as an irremovable telltale.
3. The combination with a container of the class described with a hole through the wall thereof,'the wall having a polygonal ridge spaced from said opening, of a threaded bushing assembled with the wall in alignment with said hole and formed with a polygonal flange, a threaded closure plug screwed Within the bore of the bushing; and a guard having a circular portion clamped between said flange and the portion of the wall surrounding said hole, a polygonal portion engaging said polygonal ridge and engaged by the edge of said polygonal flange, and an' annular top portion lapping said plug and having an opening to permit application of a tool to tighten said plug and to remove the plug, the top part of the guard being destroyed by removal of the closure plug while the lower part remains clamped in place between said flange and wall as an irremovable tell-tale.
4. The combination with a container of the class described with a hole through the wall thereof; of a threaded bushing assembled with said wall in alignment with said hole, said bushing having a flange which projects over the wall where the Wall surrounds the hole; a threaded closure plug screwed within the bore of the bushing and having wrench-receiving means, and an annular guard having an annular lower part my name.
