IMPROVEMENT IN DOOR-LOCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 179,912, dated July 18, 1876; application filed March 13, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES GUILD, of Piedmont, in the county of Uinta and Territory of Wyoming, have invented a new and Improved Look, of which the .l'ollowing is a specification:
My invention relates to a lock having a series of vertically-sliding tumblers with beveled ends, the same being adapted to coincide with a notched rib attached to the bolt. It also relates to the construction of the key with removable interchangeable wards secured by a clamp, as hereinafter described and claimed.

A represents the notched rib of the bolt B. 0 represents the vertically-sliding gravitytumblers of the lock, which have a notch, l), in which the rib A may slide, and they are arranged in the notches E of the rib to be moved up by the key F, to set the notches of all the tumblers to coincide with the rib and to fall down when released, and so displace the notches that the bolt cannot be withdrawn.
The key acts horizontally against the beveled ends G of the tumblers to force them up. It is constructed with wards H, one for each tumbler (3, so adjusted as to length that each ward of the key lifts its tumbler of the lock to the right position. The tumblers are beveled both ways for applying the key from outside or inside. The combination is changed by raising the slide I of the case, and taking out the tumblers O and changing them, and by taking out the block Jof the key and shifting its wards to correspond. This block is released by pressing down the spring-catch K. L is a key-hole cover to slide up over the keyhole and close it, so as to prevent inserting a key from the outside.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The vertically-sliding tumblers O, having beveled ends G, for being operated by a horizontally working key, substantially as specified.
2. The removable interchangeable wards H, in combination with the key-shank F, the clamp-piece J, and spring-catch K, as shown and described.
