February 6, 1930. Serial No. 426,373.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in an advertising attachment for street car hand straps or handles.
One construction of hand strap for street and other cars comprises an iron casting having a bearing at one end for the support of the same and a loop at its other end to be grasped by a hand and the primary object of this invention is to provide an advertising attachment for the hand strap to be attached thereto between the bearing and looped ends.
or A further object of the invention is to provide an advertising attachment for hand straps of a car wherein the attachment is preferably formed of sheet metal and designed for the display of advertising matter with means for rigidly attaching the device to the hand strap and being constructed in a 0 manner to permit easy detachment and application thereof.
With the above and other objects in view that will become apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and claimed.
In the drawings Figure l is a front elevational view of a cast iron hand strap with one form of advertising device attached thereto, the leg or shank of the strap comprising ribs with which a part of the device is engaged; v
Figure 2 is a side elevational view'of the form of the invention shown in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a rear elevational view showing retaining lugs at the side edges of the advertising device bent into engagement with parts of the strap to hold the device against movement thereon;
Figure 4 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Figure 3;
Figure 5 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 5-5 of Figure 3;
Figure 6 is a fragmentary front elevational view of another form of advertising device;
Figure 7 is a fragmentary side elevational View showing opposite sides of the advertising device pressed into engagement with the strap;
Figure 8 is a rear elevational view showing the bent flange connection between the rear edges of the advertisingdevice;
Figure 9 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 9-9 of Figure 6;
Figure 10 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 1010 of Figure 6;
Figure 11 is a front elevational view of another form of advertising device;
Figure 12 is aside elevational view of the form of invention shown in Figure 11;
Figure 13 is a rear elevational View showing lugs at the upper and lower ends of the advertising device bent into engagement with the strap; and
Figure 14 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 14-14 of Figure 13.
In the several forms of the invention, the advertising device is adapted for attachment to a car hand strap of the type preferably formed by casting and embodying a shank having radial ribs 15 with a cylindrical bearing 16 at its upper end for mounting upon a supporting shaft with a looped hand grip 17 attached to its lower end by spaced side arms 18 inclosing the lower end of'the shank and anchored thereto by cross rivets 19 having their heads projecting outwardly of the arms 18 and in spaced relation as shown in Figures 3 and 13.
In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 1 to 5, the advertising device that is preferably struck from a blank of sheet metal comprises a front wall 20 and side walls 21, the device being U-shaped in cross-section. The blank from which the device is formed is provided with horizontally spaced arcuate slits 22 so that in the bending of the blank into U-shape, a front cross strip 23 will be provided for advertising matter. The lower ends of the side portions 21 are provided with enlargements 24, it being understood that advertising matter is to be applied to the front and sides of the device. The upper ends of the front and sides of the device are crimped as at 25 for intimate contact with the ribs 15 of the strap shank, while a lug 26 at each upper side edge is adapted to be bent into engagement with the adjacent side rib of the shank as shown in Figure 3. A lug or finger 27 is carried by each edge of the sides 21 and as shown in Fig. 8, these fingers are adapted to be bent into engagement with the adjacent arm of the looped hand strap and positioned between adjacent rivets 19. This assembly retains the advertising device in position upon the hand strap, sliding movement of the device being prevented by the fingers 27 cooperating with the rivets 19. The attachment of the lugs 26 with the strap shank is clearly shown in Figure 4 while the anchor finger 27 is illustrated in Figure 5.
In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 6 to 10, the advertising device 1521 is designed for inclosing the shank of the hand strap and carries at the upper edge of the front wall, an advertising shield 28. The opposite sides of the advertising device 1564 adjacent the "lower edges as shown in Figures 7, 8 and 10 are pressed inwardly as at 29 for binding engagement with the strap shank to hold the device rigidly mounted. The rear side edges of the advertising device 15a are connected together over their entire lengths by a head or crimped arrangement as shown at 30 in Figures 9 and 10. Advertising matter may be suitably applied to the entire exterior surface of the device 15a.
In the form of the invention shown in Figures 11 to 14, the advertising device 15?) assumes another design or configuration with front and side walls, lugs 31 and 32 carried by the upper and lower edges respectively of the device 156 being bent into engagement with the car strap as clearly shown in Figure 13. Further anchorage of the device is accomplished by pressing the lower ends of the sides of the device inwardly as at 33 between the side arms 18 of the hand grip as shown in Figure M.
In each form of the invention, the advertising device is rigidly attached to the hand strap, but may be readily disengaged therefrom. Advertising matter may be applied to all of the exposed faces of each device and will be clearly viewable at all times.
Vhile there are herein shown and described the preferred embodiments of the present invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
I claim 1. An advertising attachment for car straps comprising a metallic plate having front and side portions and lugs carried by the edges of the plate adapted to be bent into engagement with the strap for anchoring the plate to the strap.
2. An advertising attachment for car straps comprising a metallic plate having front and side portions and lugs carried by the edges of the plate adapted to be bent into engagement with the strap for anchoring the plate to the strap, the strap comprising sections connected together by rivets having exposed heads, and a pair of said lugs bent from opposite edges of the plate to lie between adjacent rivet heads.
3. An advertising attachment for car straps comprising a metallic plate having front and side portions and lugs carried by the edges of the plate adapted to be bent into engagement with the strap for anchoring the plate to the strap, and means on the strap engaged by a pair of said lugs to prevent sliding movement of the plate on the strap.
4. In combination with a hand strap of a car wherein the strap is formed of metal and embodies a shank having longitudinal ribs, an advertising plate inclosing a part of the. shank, and lugs on the edges of the plate bent into engagement with the ribs.
5. In combination with the hand strap of a car wherein the strap is formed of metal and embodies a shank having longitudinal ribs, an advertising plate inclosing a part of the shank, lugs on the edges of the plate bent into engagement with the ribs, and other lugs interlockingly engaged with a part of the shank.
6. In combination with the hand strap of a car wherein the strap is formed of metal and embodies a shank having longitudinal ribs, an advertising plate inclosing a part of the shank, lugs on the edges of the plate bent into engagement with the ribs, other lugs interlockingly engaged with a part of the shank, and parts of the plate pressed into interlocking engagement with the strap.
In testimony whereof I afi'iX my signature.
CARMINE PUZO.
