head or rim on a lamp chimney of a thickness greater than the thickness of the glass of the body of the chimney; to provide a device for forming a head on a lamp chimney and simultaneously shaping the head with a sealloped contour; to provide a device which forms a thick bead, scallops the bead, and externally flutes the head in one operation; to provide a crimping device having removable interchangeable shaping dies; to provide means for interlocking a shaping die in a crimping head; and to provide other improvements as will hereinafter appear.
In the accompanying drawings Fig. 1 represents a plan of a crimping mold embodying one form of the present invention; Fig. 2 represents a section on line 22 of Fig. 1 showing the rotatable plug in side elevation; Fig. 3 represents a section of the plug on line 3-3 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 represents a side elevation in part section of a lamp chimney top as formed by the crimping mold.
Referring to the drawings one form of the present invention consists of a crimping body 10, preferably of steel, terminating at one side in an annular flange 11, and at the opposite side in a tubular huh or shank 12 concentric with respect to the flange 11. The flange 11 forms and encircles a cylindrical opening 13, the bottom of which is formed by the reduced diameter of the shank 12, while the depth of the opening 13 is such as to re ceive the end of the lamp chimney to be crimped as well as certain of the forming adjuncts.
In order to provide the upper marginal edge of the lamp chimney with an external circumferential fluting, the flutes of which are parallel to the long axis of the chimney, the internal circumferential face of the flange 11 is milled or otherwise cut with coaxial teeth 14: of such configuration as will 1929. provide a longitudinal groovebetween each pair of teeth of the desired shape to produce the predetermined contour of molded flute 15. The formation .of these teeth 14 is facilitated by the provision of an internal circumferential groove 16 which is spaced from the outer face of the flange 11 the necessary distance to allow the teeth to have the desired length.
For the purposeof forming a scalloped face on theend of thelamp chimney, a ring 17, preferably of bronze, is arranged to it Within the opening 13 and seat flush against the bottom thereof. The outside diameter of this ring 17 is such that it fits snugly within the internal diameter of the flange 11 butcan be readily removed therefrom when re quired. The outer face of the ring 17 is of the scalloped shape desired to roduce the; finished contour of the lamp cliimney end and, as here shown; consists of a plurality of arced depressions 18 so spaced as to form relat-ively long curved projections 20 between the pairs of depressions respectively. These projections 20 mold into the chimney end corresponding long deep recesses121 which serve as lateral air passages in the finished lamp chimney. The axial length of the ring 17 is less than the length of the opening 13 so that a rim 22 of desired length can be molded. Also the thickness of the ring 17 is such as to increase the normal thickness of the chimney and thus form a relatively thick top marginaledge upon the chimney.
For fastening the ring 17 in position so that is cannot turn relative to the flange 11 it is provided at one or more locations with a slot or slots 23 for the reception of a screw or screws 24 which thread through the head at conveninent" points to enter the slots 23. This not only holds the ring 17 in place but provides ameans whereby the ring can be taken out and quickly replaced by another say for example one having a scallop or other form of different design.
As a means for internally shaping the throat and mouth of the chimney while work ing the molten glass into the crimped condition, a plug body. 25 is provided having a stem 26 extending axially through the shank 12 for attachment to the rotatable and reciprocable spindle of the crimping machine. The plug body 25 is cylindrical and has a diameter slightly less than the internal diameter of the ring 17 to allow unrestricted relative turning movement of the plug. Coaxial with the stem 26 but projecting from the opposite side of the plugbody 25 is an elongated tool 27 of a length and size to enter the end of the lamp chimney when the latter is in the crimping head. As here shown, the tool 27 has four inwardly curved or concave sides 28 which converge to a common point in the nose 30 of the extension, thereby forming a relatively long tapered shaping member having a plurality of well defined working edges 31. Thus in assembled condition the plug body 25 fits within the ring 17 and is free to move axially relatively thereto as Well as having a rotary motion about its own axis so that the projecting tool 27 can perform its shaping function within the end of the lamp chimney.
In operating'the crimping device the end of the lamp chimney to be formed is heated to the necessary temperature to give the desired ductility and it is then pressed into the opening 13 against the stationary ring 17 so that the glass'fills the scalloped depressions therein. Simultaneously the plug body 25 is advanced, while rotating towards and into the heated glass to thereby form an inner wall spaced from the inner circumferential face of the flange 11, so that as the glass is pressed into the body 10 it will be forced laterally into thedie formed by the teeth 14.
WVhile this rim crimping operation is taking place the tool 26 is shaping the throat and rim flare of the chimney as will be seen from Fig. 41.
It will now be apparent that a complete unitary crimping device for lamp chimneys has been devised wherein -a head or rim is formed on the end of a chimney simultaneously with the formation of a scallop thereby providing a circumferential top margin of increased thickness capable of resisting breakage. Also the scalloping of this heavy rim or bead provides a plurality of relatively large lateral passages for air and products of combustion which come into operation when a container is placed upon and closes the normally open top of the chimney. Furthermore, the present construction makes possible the use of various shaped scalloped die rings since one can be readily substituted for another without interfering with the other parts of the crimping head. 7
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A crimping device comprising in combination a head having a material receiving opening and provided with an internally toothed circumferential face encircling said opening, a shaping die ring in said opening juxtaposed in close proximity to aportion of said face, and a rotatable tool arranged to operate through said ring to engage said material for crimping and shaping action whereby a scalloped top edge having a corrugated outer face is formed upon an article molded in said head.
2. A crimping device comprising in combination a head having a material receiving opening and provided with an internally toothed circumferential face encircling said opening, and means including a scalloped die ring for simultaneously crimping said material against said face and forming a scalloped edge of greater thickness than the body of said material.
