rlhis invention relates to certain new and useiul improvements in fuses and refers more particularly to the type known as expulsion fuses.
It is desirable that a single fuse structure be equally applicable for use with either low or high voltages having` a range of at least 2300 to 6600 volts; but inasmuch as higher voltages require a very rapid volatilizaticn of the fuse element to insure rupturing oi' the circuit before any damage can be done thereto or to the fuse itself and as the relativelv lower voltages require a slower speed of volatilization of the fuse element to allow practically all the element to burn away and thus prevent leakage, it has been ez;- tremely dithcult in the past to so balance the design and construction of a fuse structure to 'function satisfactorily both at high and low voltages. It is, therefore, an object ot this invention to provide a fuse of the character described which is so constructed as to be equally adaptable for use with either high or low voltages.
Another object of this invention resides in the provision of a fuse employing two independent tubes and a fuse link of substantially U-shap-e.
A further object of this invention in the provision of a fuse of the character described, having two independent tubes of different inside diameterswithin which the ends of a U-shaped fuse link are positioned.
And a still. further object oli this invention resides in the provision of a fuse of the character described having a pair of tubes in which the ends of a U-shaped link are positioned to be connected. at their outer ends with contacts carried by each tnbe, the contacts havingan insulating barrier positioned therebetween Ato increase the ereepage distance.
llVith the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description p o ceeds, my invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hcreinait described and more particularly delined by the appended claims, it being underssood that such changes inthe precise embodiment of the Serial No. 266,681.

Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawing in which like numerals designate like parts, 5 designates a housing preferably formed of porcelain or the like and having sides 6, a top 7 and a back 8; the bottom thereof being` open and the front being closed by a cover 9 which is hinged at its lower portion to the housing 5 in any suitable manner (not shown) to swing over the open front of the housing.
A barrier 10 is molded integral with the housing and is extended downwardly from the top 7 and outwardly from the back 8, being positioned medially of the sides 6 as illustrated. Positioned at the upper portion of the housing between each side 6 and the barrier 10 are a pair of Contact clips 11 which are secured by screws 12 to terminal members i3 suitably mounted in the back 8 of the housing and to which the ends of conductors 14 electrically connected byy means of set screws 15, the conductors 14 passing through apertures in the side walls 6 to connect the fuse with an electricalcircuit and the barrier 10 being` of sufficient size to prevent crcepage "from one contact clip to the other.
The fuse properis composed of a tube 1G and a tube 17, the tube 1G of greater internal and external diameter than the tube 1? and the upper ends thereof have mounted thereon contacts 18 which are adapted to be inserted between the spring cont-act clips 11 thereby electrically connected with the conductors and the electrical circuit. Each contact member 18 is provided with an yupmately "i" shape. is is customary in fuse linksv o' this nature, a portion thereof has its cross sectional area reduced as at 23, at 'which point the initial rupture takes place.
VJhen the voltage with which the fuse is to be used is relatively low, the operator places the fuse as shown in th drawing With reduced section of the link Within the tube of larger diameter so that upon an overload the volatilization ot the link is sutliciently slow to insure enough ot the link being burnt away to prevent the possibility of leakage, and When it is desired to utilize the fuse with voltages of relatively higher value it is only nec# essary to reverse the position of the link so that the initial rupture occurs Within the tube of smaller s inside diameter to insure rapid volatilizationot the fuse link and to rupture the circuit before any damage 'can be donel to either the equipment or fuse.
IInasmuch as each tube is of suilicient length to satisfactorily rupture the particular voltage tor which it is intended, the other tube increases the 'protection and safety lactor and prevents any possibility of the arc holding on.
Nhat I claim as my invention is:
l. ln a fuse structure of the character described1 a tube, a second tube ot smaller inside diameter, contacts carried by each tube, and a fuse link having one end connected With the contact of one tube and its other end connected with the contact of the other tube.
2. ln a fuse of the characterdescribed, a tube adapted tor use With relatively low voltages, a second tube having diderent charcteristics and adapted for use With relatively high voltage, contacts carried by each tube, an insulating barrier between the contacts, a fuse element having a reduced cross sectional area adj acent one end thereof, and means connecting one end ot the element With each contact, the reduced cross sectional area of the element being placed Within the tube corresponding to the voltage with Which vit is to be used.
3. In a fuse structure ot the character described, a housing member, an insulating barmesses rier positioned Within the housing member, Contact clips carried by the housing, one on each side of the insulating barrier, a pair of tubes having diilerent inside diameters, contacts carried one by each tube, a fuse element electrically connecting the con acts, and means whereby the contacts olthe tubes may be simultaneously connected With the contact clips to electrically bridge the same through the fuse element.
4. ln a fuse structure of the character described, a tube adapted for use 'With relatively loW voltages, a second tube ot different characteristics and adapted for use With relatively high voltages, contacts carried by the tubes, and a fuse element having one end portion passed into one tube and connected with the contact thereof and its other end portion passed into the other tube and connected With the contact thereof.,
