This invention relates to paper making machinery or the like, and more particularly to machinery of this character having means for cleaning and scraping the surface of a revolving roll or c hnder.
One object of t e invention is the provision, in paper making machinery or the like, of a scraper or doctor which is normally maintained in effective scraping engagement with a roll of the machine b its own weight, the doctor being adjustab y fulcrumed so the effective pressure of the doctor blade against the roll may be changed without changing the normal position of the blade.
Another object of the invention is the provision in a machine of this character of a doctor which is attached in a novel manner to reciprocating blocks or slides by means of which endwise movement of the doctor is obtained.

The invention as herein disclosed relates to paper making machinery or the like employing a doctor or scraper for cleaning or scraping the surface of a revolving roll such as a press roll or the like, the drawing disclosing the invention as applied to a paper press which receives the paper web, carried by an endless felt between the upper press roll and the lower press roll, between which considerable pressure is exerted on the web and felt to remove some of the water content from the web. As shown the machine comprises a frame 10 embodying opposite side portions 11 and 12 betwen which is rotatably carried the upper press roll 13. The upper press roll cooperates with a lower roll 14 rotatably journaled in hearings on a base member 15. The
simultaneously moved out of base member preferably provides a support on which the frame 10 is ivoted, journals 16 being rovided at opposite sides of the machine or this purpose. The frame 10 carr ing the upper press roll is adapted to lie moved about the axis of journals 16 b suitable hydraulic means embodying hy raulic cylinder 18 for each side of the machine, the pistons 19 of which are connected by thrust rods 20 to downwardly extendin arms 21 of frame 10. By means of the hydraulic raising mechanism mentioned, the opposite ends of the upper press roll may be similarly and engagement with the lower press roll to prevent in ury to the rolls in case of week-end shut downs, and to facilitate the removal or replacement of the paper carrying felts.
11 back of the upper press roll 13 the frame 10 operably carries a broke conveyor 24 shown in the form of a wide flexible endless band supported by conveyor wheels 25 and 26 and operating between guide frames 23 of any suitable character. One of the conveyor wheels is power driven by means of a suitable drive shaft 27 which is connected by a suitable sprocket drive or the like 28 to the axle 30 of the upper press roll. This broke conveyor receives the broke or scrapings from the doctor 32, the blade 33 of which engages the surface of the roll 13.
The doctor comprises amain body poxtion 34 preferably in the form of a hollow pipe or bar extending between opposite portions 11 and 12 of the frame. The doctor blade 33is fixed to the outside of this body portion by means of screws 35 or the like, the blade portion of the doctor extending toward opposite sides of the body portion as shown. The blade portion 33 of the doctor is preferably substantially flat from the edge 36 where it engages the surface of the roll 13, to the rear end 37 which lies over the broke conveyor, the blade portion inclining downwardly and rearwardly as shown from its point of engagement with the roll so that the material scraped or cleaned from the surface of the roll readily travels down the inclined surface of the blade and falls on the broke conveyor which then carries this material oif to one side of the machine.
The end of the blade which engages the roll 13 is preferably formed as a detachable flexible strip of steel or the like of sufficient thinness so thatthe edge is flexible enough to follow irregularities in the surface of the roll. The effective scraping edge of the doctorbeing rather flexible as just mentioned, the weight of the doctor may be used to hold the blade edge in effective scraping engagement with the roll so that the latter may be effectively cleaned of any paper particles, Water, or the like which might adhere to its surface. Each end of the doctor is therefore supported about an axis which lies *preferably to one side of the body portion 34 of the doctor. At each end of the body portion of the'doctor are a pair of pivotally interconnected members such as the clamp members 40 and 41 pivotally interconnected by a stud 42 which is threaded or otherwise fixed in one of these members and rotatably mounted in the other, these studs forming the pivotal axis about which the body portion is fulcrumed. The members 40 and 41 are shown in the form of clamps having split sides, the two lugs 43 provided at the split side of a clamp being adapted to be drawn together by a bolt 44 to clamp the member securely in place. Clamp 41 is fixed on the endof the body portion 34, the clamp 40 being securely fixed to an annular flange or boss'projecting from block 45. The clamp members may be adjusted aboutthe axis of the body portion when the bolts 44 are loosened, the latter being tightened again after the proper position of the fulcrum axis has been attained so that the weight of the body portion is effective in holding the edge of the doctor against the roll ineffective scraping engagement therewith. The weight of the body portion, which is rather heavy since it must be rigid enough to carry the weight of the long doctor blade and prevent it from sagging in the middle, is thus effective to hold the scraping edge of the doctor against the roll-wlthout employin the customary loading weights or springs. 330th ends of the body portion of the doctor are mounted in the manner just described, the fulcrum studs 42 being of course arranged in alignment so that the doctor is fulcrumed about a line extending parallel to but spaced from the longitudinal axis of the doctor. It will be noted that by reason of this construction adjustment in the effective pressure of the doctor blade against the roll for variation in pressure can be obtained without changing the normal position of the doctor blade or the doctor body, and Without variation in the angle of inclination of the doctor blade. The pivotal fulcrum at 42 lies between vertical planes containing the scraping edge of the blade and its rear edge 37 so that material scraped or removed from the roll by the doctor does not materially alter the effective pressure of the doctor blade, as such material when on the doctor is distributed over its entire upper surface. The angle of inclination of the doctor blade is preferably such that the material which it removes from the roll readily passes along over the doctor and falls onto the broke conveyor 24.
The blocks or slides 45 which support the fixed clamps 40 are guided for movement in the frame 10 in the direction of the lon 'tuclinal axis of the doctor. As shown t ese blocks 45 reciprocate between the side guides 47 provided on the frame, the blocks being preferably slotted as indicated at 48 so as to receive rollers 49 extending between the side guides 47 and through the slots, these rollers being rotatable upon the bolts 50 mounted in the side guides 47 and assuming the weight of the blocks. One of these slide blocks 45 is adapted to be reciprocated back and forth to move the doctor and the other block in the direction of the axis of the doctor to prevent grooving of the roll. This operated block has a fork extension 52, a rotatable eccentric cam 53 operating between the fork sides 54 of this extension. The cam 53 is carried on a shaft 55 journaled at 56 and 57, shaft 55 also carrying a worm gear 58 or the like meshing with worm 59 on axle 30 of the roll 13. This roll, which is of course positively driven during operation of the machine, thus rotates the shaft 55 rather slowly and the cocentric cam 53 causes back and forth movement of the slide block 45 so that the doctor is moved back and forth as the roll rotates.
By reason of the construction described it will be apparent that the doctor may be made rather light in weight, since the entire weight of the doctor blade and body portion is effective in holding the blade edge against the roll in effective scraping engagement therewith, loading weights or the like being unnecessary. The weight of the body portion and the doctor blade produces suflicient pressure on the doctor as the edge of the blade is sufficiently flexible to follow irregularities in.
the roll.
While the form of apparatus herein described constitutes a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to this precise form of apparatus, and that changes may be made therein without departing from the scope of the invention which is defined in the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. In a paper making machine of theclass described, a frame, a rotatable roll supported on said frame, a doctor cooperating with said roll and comprising a bodyportion and a blade fixed to said body portion and extending downwardly and rearwardly away from said roll, a broke conveyor extending below v 1,7es,ss7
the rear portion of said blade, said blade being inclined downwardly towards said broke conveyor, and means for pivotally supporting said doctor in an adjustable manner so its effective pressure on the roll may be varied without substantially altering the angle of inclination of the blade.
2. In a pa er making machine of the class described, a rame, a rotatable roll supported on said frame, a doctor cooperating with said roll and comprising a body portion and a blade fixed to said body portion and extending downwardl and rearwardly away from said roll, a bro e conveyor extending below the rear portion of said blade, said blade being substantially flat from its said rear portion to its line of engagement with the roll and inclined downwardly toward said broke conveyor, and means for pivotally supporting said doctor in an adjustable manner so its effective pressure on the roll may be varied without substantially altering the angle of inclination of the blade.

6. In a paper press, a press frame, a rotatable press roll operably supported on said press frame, a doctor cooperating with said roll and comprising a body portion and a blade fixed to said body portion and projecting towards opposite sides thereof, said blade having a flexible roll engaging edge and being substantially fiat and inclining downwardly and rearwardly away from said roll from one end thereof to the other, a broke conveyor operably carried by said frame below the rear end of said blade, means pivotally supporting opposite ends of said body portion about an axis oifset from the lon itudinal axis from said body portion and ocated between vertical planes extendin through the blade edge and the rear end 0 the blade, and means for adjusting the pivotal support of said body portion to vary the efiective pressure of the roll while maintaining the blade in a definite normal position.
