W. W. ARNOLD.
' CARTRIDGE LOADNG IMPLEMENTS.
No. 179,888.` Patented July 18. 18'36.

WILLIAM IV. ARNOLD, OF RUSHVILLE, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CARTRIDGE-LOADING IMPLEMENTS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. RWLSSS, dated July 18, 1876; application filed June 26, 1876. l Y
To all whom Vit may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. ARNOLD, of Rnshville, in the county of Rush and State of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved Gartridge-li'lanipulator, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to that class of instruments which are used in loading and capping metallic cartridges; and it consists of a lever combined with other devices, making a convenient instrument for loading' and capping metallic cartridges, and for removing cartridges from the gun; also, for removing the spent cap from the cartridge.'
In the drawing, Figures l and 2 are elevations, with portions cut awa v, on line w :t in Fig. 3, and Fig. 3 is a top view ot' Figs. l and 2, with the lever folded down.
A is a ring, having hooks a a a formed on one side, which are capable of engaging with the l'lange on the closed end of a cartridge- Shell. A lever, B, is pivoted to the ring A, at b, and is capable otl being folded down parallel with the face ofthe ring A. c is a small boss projecting from the under side ofthe lever B, which is located centrally in relation to the ring A, when the lever B is folded down. G is a head screwed onto the end of the lever B, and has a diameter which is a little less than the internal diameter ot' the cartridge-shell. Ihe end ot' the lever A is bored to receive a a pin, d, which is shouldered, so that when it is not in use the smaller part oi' it will t the smaller part of the hole in the lever; but when it is to be used, the head C is unscrewcd, and the pin reversed, when the head is replaced, and the pin allowed to project through a hole drilled in the head for that purpose.
The manner of using my instrument is as follows: In filling cartridges, the head Gis used to force the powder and Wads home.
Gaps are placed on the cartridge by placing i the cartridge-shell in the ring A, putting the cap on the anvil7 of the cartridge, and forcing it down with the lever B.
'After a cartridge has been discharged, it may be removed from the gun by placing the hooks a a a on the ila-nge at the end ot' the shell, and drawing it out by the ringA or lever B.
The spent cap is removed from the cartridgeshell by forcing the pin d against it from the inside of the shell, the head C serving as a guide, insuring its entrance at the cap-aperture.
In my improvement I combine the advantages ot' four separate tools, viz: a loader, a capper, a cartridge-remover, and a cap-remover. It is simple, effective, and inexpensive.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A cartridgemanipulator, consisting ot a ring with hooks attached, and a lever carrying a boss for capping, and a head for loading, and a pin for nncapping, made and oper# ated substantially as'shown and described.
2. The combination ofthe ring A, hooks a, levers B, head C, and pin d, as specified.
VILLIAM W. ARNOLD.
