WILKINSON, OF OAK PARK, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO CRIBBEN SIElX'lOIbl' COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS BROILER OVEN Application filed February 23, 1927. Serial No. 170210.
rlhe present invention pertains especially to a broiler-oven for a gas range, or other range; and the primary object is to provide an improved broiler-oven -of simple and staunch construction having improved means for adjusting the broiler-pan to any desired height in the drawer.
rlhe invention constitutes a modification of the invention described in my Patent No. 1,614,167, granted January 11, 1927.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in its preferred embodiment as applied to a gas range. It will be understood, however, that the broiler-burner may be a gas-burner, an oil burner, or an electric burner or heating element.
In the drawings- Fig. 1 is a broken front elevational view of a gas range constructed in accordance with the invention; Fig. 2, a broken plan sectional view taken as indicated at line 2-2 of Fig. 1, lout showing the broiler-drawer withdrawn and the broiler-pan broken; Fig. 3, a plan sectional view of the broiler-drawer with cer tain parts removed; Fig. 4, a vertical sectional view taken as indicated at line 4 of Fig. 3; Fig. 5, a vertical sectional view taken as indicated at line 5 of. Fig. 8; Fig.` 6, a transverse sectional view taken as indicated at line 6 of Fig. 3; Fig. 7 a broken detail sectional view taken as indicated at line 7 0f Fig. 3; Fig. 8, a broken vertical sectional view taken as indicated at line 88 of Fig. 2; Fig. 9, a broken vertical sectional view on an enlarged scale taken as indicated at line 9 of Fig. 3; Fig. 10, a transverse sectional view taken as indicated at lin-e 10 of Fig. 9; Fig. 11, a plan sectional view of a broiler-oven embodying a modification of the invention; Fi 12, a vertical sectional view taken, as indlcated at line 12 of Fig. 11; Fig. 13, a front elevational view of the modification; and Fig. 14, a broken vertical sectional view taken as indicated at line i 14 of Fig. 12.
In the construction illustrated in Figs.
1-10, A designates an oven-unit com rising an upper baking-oven A' and a lower roileroven A2; B, the cooking-top of the range; C,
i a broiler-drawer with which the compartment A2 is equipped; and D, a broiler-burner The withdrawable broiler-drawer'C housesa tray, or broiler-pan, C which in the preferredconstruction illustrated is removably carried by a supporting element C2 carried by adjusting mechanism C3 which is. equipped with an adjusting handle C4l disposed outside the broiler-drawer, preferably in front of the front end thereof, said front end constituting a closure for the broiler-compartment.
The broiler-compartment A2 may be constructed in any desired manner. As shown, it is provided with a front frame 1 which constitutes a portion of the front frame of the oven-unit, the frame 1 being provided with an opening through which the broiler-drawer works. The frame preferably is provided with a recess, or rabbeted portion, 1a which forms a countersink adapted to receive a Inarginal portion of the front end of the broilerdrawer when the structure is in closed condition.
The broiler-drawer C may be of any suit-v able construction. It is shown as comprising a bottom 2 equipped with upturned lateral flanges 2n; a rear end 3; anda front end 4. These parts may be connected in any suitable manner. The front end of the drawer, as appears from Fig. 1, constitutes a closure for the broiler-compartment of the range. It comprises a rectangular frame 4a, an outer sheet-metal panel 4b, and a lining panel 4.
The adjusting mechanism C3 which serves to adjust the height of the broiler-pan preferably comprises a pair of parallel bars 5 upon which the supporting-member C2 is fastened, as by means of bolts 5, said bars having depending from their central portions or lifting. device 9, connected by pivots 9a with the member 6 and serving to actuate the links; and a traveling-nut 10 connected with a screw 11 actuated by a handle 11a disposed in front of the lower member of the frame-i". The screw 11 has a shaft 11b journalled at its front end in the frame-members 4 and 6 and at its rear end in a lug 12 which rises from a reinforcing bar 12a which is secured to the bottom 2 of the drawer, as by means of screwbolts 12b'. The members 6 and 12a serve as supporting means for the tray-adjusting mechanism.v These members, obviously, may be rigidly connected together and secured to the bottom and front of the drawer C, in any desired manner. As illustrated in Fig. 4, the member 6is connected by screws 13 with the lower member of the frame 4a.
The member 6 is provided at its rear side with suitable lugs for supportingthe pivots 7, 8'1 and 9, as will be understood from Figs. 3 and 9. 'The swinging lifting-member 9 is provided at its rear end with lateral extensions 9b whichl extend beneath the upper links 7. The links 7 are bent, or offset, downwardly near their front ends, as indicated at 7c, the purpose being to provide sufficient clearance for the front portion of the supporting-plate, or pan C2. The upper and lower links serve substantially as parallel links adapted to carry the member C2 through a vertical path in the raising and lowering of said member.
The swinging-member 9 is equipped with a central Web-portion 9c which is provided with an incline, or wedge, 9d which is adapted to be engaged -by the traveling-nut 10. Thus, the incline serves as a cam engaged by the nut; and as the nut travels forwardly (see Fig. 9), it serves to swing the member 9 to the dotted position and elevate the broiler-pan. When the screw is turned in the opposite direction, the nut travels rearwardly,
yand the lifting device and broiler-pan settle down under their own weight.
The broiler-drawer may be housed within the broiler-compartment, excepting for the I front end of the vdrawer which serves as a closure for the broiler-compartment. When desired, the broiler-drawer may be drawn outwardly to the position shown in Fig. 8 to enable the meat to be inspected, turned, or removed, as desired. The broiler-pan can be lifted readily from the supporting-member C2.
The broiler-drawer may be mounted to slide with relation to the broiler-compartment, in any desired manner. In the illustration given, the drawer is equipped at opposite sides of its lower portion with guide-members 14 which engage traveling guide-members, or slides, 15, which are capable of traveling in guides 16 with which the broilercompartment A2 is equipped at opposite sides of its lower portion. The means for slidably supporting the broiler-drawer may be of the construction illustrated in the abovementioned patent.
The nut 10 comprlses a block having al Vlower edge with rollers 10b adapted to travel on the bar 12.'
The handle 11 of the adjusting mechanism is secured to the front end of the shaft 11", and is outside the broiler-drawer. Thus, the
handle is readily laccessible, and remains suihciently cool.
. In the modification shown in Figs. 11-14, C5 designates a,broiler-drawer equipped with a tray-supporting` member C2 carried by bars 5 and actuating- links 7 and 8, as described with reference to the construction shown in Figs. 1-10. Also, in the modification, there isemployed a swinging lifting-member 9, as in the previously described construction. In the modification, the bottom 2 of the drawer is equipped with a transverse bar 17 which supports the central portion of a lever 18 which is pivotally connected with the bott'om of the drawer, as indicated at 19.` The front end of the lever 18 projects through a slot 2O with which the lower portion of the closure 4 is provided and affords a handle 18. The bottom of the slot 20 is provided with teeth 20a to enable the lever to be positioned at any desired point. The lever is provided centrally with a cam, or wedge, 18b upon which rides a small roller 21 with which the swinging lifting device 9 is equipped. When the lever is swung in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 11, the wedge serves to swing the member 9 upwardly and lift the pan'C. When the lever is swung in the reverse direction, the pan and supporting mechanism is lowered by gravity.
In each of the described constructions, the tray-supporting member C2 is carried by a parallel link-mechanism equipped with bars which support the member. This is the preferred construction, but any suitable trayadjusting mechanism equipped with an exterior operating handle may be substituted without departure from the invention.
The foregoing detailed description has been given for clearness of .understanding claims should be construed as broadly as A permissible, in view of the prior art.
