The cylinder heads 3 are eachprovided with an intake port 4 and an exhaust port with hich o pera e. teratively p rts 6 of an intake manifold 7 and port extensions 8v of an exhaust manifold 9, the ports 6, having flanges 10 surrounding the same, while the port extensions 8 are provided with flanges 11. i r r The body of the exhaust manifold is also provided with a plurality of exhaust ports 12, one for each cylinder 2, which communicate with the lower end of the cylinder, said exhaust ports 12 being soarranged that a line drawn horizontally ,thru the centers thereof will be atusubstantially the same height as the bottomwall 13 of the manifold 9. The ports 12 are adapted to register with exhaust openings-14 at the lower ends of the cylinders. i p,
, Positioned on the opposite sides of the cylinders 2 from the exhaust manifold 9, is an air inlet manifold 15, which communicates with the cylinders 2,,thruports 16 andin order to clamp the exhaust and air manifolds in position over the ports 12and 16, bolts 17 are extended transversely between the cylinders and thru parts of the manifolds 9 and 15, preferably one bolt between each pair of cylinders. The bolts 17 are so arranged with respect to the exhaust manifold that they will pass thru bores 18 in the walll il and substantially in line, with the axial centers of the exhaust ports 12, thus leavinga smooth uninterrupted passage for theexhaust products thru the manifold. The bolts 17 pass substantially centrally thru the manifold 15 bolts, will be equally and uniformly distributedaround thep'orts of the respective manifolds and" the pressure against the exhaust manifold will be directed edgewise against. thebottom wall 13, sothat the Walls of the. exhaust manifold will notbuckleorbe s rung 5? th tee age sea s Br p w s the bolts substantially in axial alignment with the exhaust ports 12, the pressure of the manifold 9 against the end walls of the exhaust ports 12 will be uniform thruout the diameters of said exhaust ports. As shown in Fig. 2, the bolts 17 pass thru the outwardly disposed bosses 19 which prevent the walls of the air manifold 15 buckling or bending.
In addition to the bolts 17 for attaching'the exhaust manifold to the cylinders, the flanges 11 on the extensions 8 are locked in position under the exhaustports 5 of the heads-3, and the flanges 10 of the intake manifold 7 locked. in position over the intake ports 4 by extending bolts 20 between each pair of intake and exhaust'ports of'each head 3, washers 21engaging the under faces of the flanges 10 and 11, while nuts 22 are threaded onto the ends of the bolts 20, which, when tightened will lock the flanges securely against the faces of the ports 4 and 5. As best shown inFig. 2, the bolts 20 are in substantial alignment with the vertical centers of the ports f and 5, so that it will require but one bolt for each set of ports. 5
By attaching the manifolds in this manner 5 the joints between thevarious ports and between the heads and the cylinders, may be ground joints, thus dispensing with gaskets at these points, in which event, theheads may be removed from the cylinders without disturbing the adjustments of the valve operating rods, etc.
Each cylinder head 3 is provided with a valve 23, which controls the admission of gaseous fuel to the cylinders, eachvalve having a rocker arm 24: cooperating therewith,
which is in turn operated by means of a rod 25, a tappet 26 and a cam 27, as is usual, and
suitable adjusting means 28 being provided between the rocker arm 24: and rod 25. Each. head-3 is also provided with a valve (not shown) for controlling the exhaust port' 5 therein, said valves being operated in the same manner as the valves 23 and having the same adjusting mechanisms thereon for the rocker arms and operating rods therefor.

' With this form of device it will be readily seen that each entire cylinder with the head thereon, may be removed without disturbing or disarranging the manifolds or cylinders, as by loosening the bolts 17 at each side of the particular-cylinder to be removed and .removing'the bolt 20 of that particular cylinder, the entire cylinder may be lifted out or returned to position without disturbing" guard against any possibility .of the ignment any of the other parts of the engine. Likewise, each of the cylinder heads may be removed by disconnecting the respective bolt 20, without disarranging the manifolds or their connections with the other cylinders.
It will likewise be seen that the operation of assembling or disassembling. the engine will be greatly facilitated, asthe number of bolts required to connect the manifolds to the engine is reduced to a minimum.
While the description and drawings illustrate in a general waycertain instrumentalities which may be employed in carrying the invention into effect, it is evident that many modifications may be made in the various .details without departing from the scope of the appended claims, it being understood that the invention is not restricted'to the particular examples herein described.
I claim as my invention:
1. The combination with an engine and manifolds therefor, of bolts for clamping a pair of manifolds to said c'ylin ders, said bolts connecting solely with said manifolds and passing between said cylin- 3. The combination with the cylinders of' an engine and manifolds therefor, of-means exten-dingbetween the pairs of cylinders and engaging said manifolds for" binding said manifolds against'said cylinders- 4. The combination with the cylinders of an engine having an exhaust and an air inlet port adjacent their lower ends, and a pair of manifolds adapted to cooperate with said exhaust and air ports, of means extendin between said cylinders for clamping sai manifolds in position'over their respective ports, and means for preventing buckling of the walls of the manifolds whenthe clamping means is applied.
5. The'combination with the cylinders of an engine, havin exhaust ports in the lower portions thereo of an exhaust manifold having ports adjacent one wall' thereof for cooperating with the ports of the cylinders, the port containing wall of the manifold between said port openings being on a common level, the axial centers of said manifold ports being substantially central with the medial of the port containing wall of the mani- 6. The combination with an exhaust manifold having ports therein, the centers of which are substantially on a line with the turbing the position 0 operative position, said bolts passing thru the lower wall of said manifold substantially in line with the centers of said ports, whereby the clamping strain of the bolts will be directed edgewise against said lower wall and no part of the covering for the bolts project above the bottom wall.
.7. The combination with the cylinders of an engine, of manifolds on opposite sides of said cylinders, means extending between the cylinders and from one manifold to the other for clamping said manifolds in engagement with said cylinders, and means for preventing said manifolds dropping down when the clamping means is loosened.
8. The combination with a manifold having ports therein adjacent one wall thereof, the centers of said ports being substantially on a line with the medial line of said wall, of bolts for clamping said manifold in operative position, said bolts passing through said alining wall and substantially in line with the centers of said ports with no part of the covering for said bolts projecting-beyond the inner face of said wall.
9. The combination with a cylinder, and a removable head for said cylinder having ports therein with their outer ends projecting downwardly, of manifolds for cooperation with said ports, and means for drawing said manifolds upwardly and bind them in engagement with said port ends, whereby when said securing means is released said head may be removed from the c linder without disf said manifolds.
