This invention. relates to automatic train control systems, and has special reference to the provision of an improved automatic train control system of the induction type.
11 principal object of the present invention comprehends the provision of an induction train control system in which train carried mechanism is operated to produce a plurality of diiferenteffects responsive to the cooperation between vehicle carried and roadside inductor means, the construction and the cooperation being such that the vehicle carried inductor means is influenced by the roadside inductor means to produce a controlling, such as a tripping action ofthe vehicle caried mechanism under one roadside condiion and is influenced by theroadside inducor means under one or more different roadside conditions to produce a resetting action yof the-vehicle carried mechanism.
A. further principal object-ofithe present invention relates to the provision of an inductive system of thetype referred to in which the vehicle carried and roadside inductor means are operated by means of a vehicle carried source of energy.
A still furtherprincipal objectofthe invention includes the provision of system of the nature referred to in which the vehicle 0 carried and roadside inductor means are constructed so as to cooperate for producing a controlling or trippin operation of the train carried mechanism under a danger roadside condition, and for producing a resetting 5 action of the vehicle carriedmechanism under a safe or clear roadside condit on when the same has been trippechthe roadside inductor means being however inoperative toproduce any change in the vehicle carried mechanism under a safe or clear roadside condition when the said vehicle carried mechanism has not been tripped.
Further objects of the invention include the provision of a simplified induction system in which a vehicle carried inductor is-em-.
ployed for energizing the vehicle carried mechanism, the said inductortbeing influcnccd. b the roadside inductor means under one roadside condition for producing the controlling action of the vehiclecarriedmechap Sion of a system of this nature in which the parts ofthe system are coordinated toproduce proceed, proceed at caution and stop effects on the vehicleinresponseto clear, caution and x.dange ,r conditions onthe roadside; andthe provision ofimproved means amplifying: the energyinductively received for producing the resetting operation of the vehicle carried mechanism.
To the accomplishment ofthe foregoing and such other objects as may hereinafter appear, my invention consists in the elements and their relation one tothe other, as hereinafter particularly described and sought to be defined in the claims, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings which show a preferred embodiment of my invention and in which: 7

Fig. 2 is. a diagrammatic view. showing one means for amplifying.- the energy inductively received by parts ofthe vehicle carried mechanism, and
Fig; .3 is a view of a modified form ofenergy amplifying means.
Before describing in detail thesystem/of my invention, I will briefly premisethat in vehicle carried and roadside inductor means AB cooperating to produce a controlling operation of the valve V under one or more roadside conditions such as a danger or caution condition, to modify the operation of the valve V under other roadside conditions such as a clear or caution roadside condition and to prevent any controlling operation or modifying operation of the valve V as when the train is running clear,
under clear roadside conditions, or when running at caution under caution roadside conditions.
The valve V may be any suitable valve for controlling the flow of air in the train line of an air bra re system, such valve being preferably of the type shown in the patent to A. G. Shaver No. 1,411,526 of April 4, 1922. The valve V is controlled by means of an electromagnet 10 which is normally energized by a vehicle carried circuit designated for convenience as h and comprising the generator G, conductors 11, 12 and 13, contact 14 which is normally closed by the energization of a relay F, conductor 15, conductor 16, coil of electromagnet- 10 and conductors 17, 18 and 19.
In the preferred embodiment of my invention the circuit h is controlled and operated to produce proceed, proceed at caution and stop effects in response to clear, caution, and danger roadside conditions. Under clear roadside conditions the circuit h is closed at the contact 14 due to the energization of the relay F, which relay is deenergized under danger roadside conditions to efiect the opening of the contact 14 and the opening and the deenergizing oi the circuit h and electromagnet 10 respectively. Undercaution track conditions the circuit h is controlled by a branch or partial circuit arranged in parallel with the contact 14, the said branch or partial circuit comprising the conductor 20, a speed circuit controller 21,
, the contacts of which are closed when the vehicle is traveling at or below a predetermined speed and are opened when the vehicle exceeds such speed, conductor 22, contact .13 controlled by a relay H, and conductor 24. Under caution track conditions the relay H is energized to close the contact 23, placing the circuit h under the control of th speed circuit controller 21 so that when the speed of the vehicle under the caution track conditions is at or below the predetermined or fixed speed, the electromagnet 10 is encrgized to permit the train to proceed under restriction; and when such speed of the vehicle is exceeded, the electromagnet 10 is deenergized to operate the train Venting valve V. to bring the train to a stop.
The relays F and H are operated by means of the vehicle carried source of energy G and are controlled by the cooperation of the vehicle carried and roadside inductor means 1 A-B. The relay F comprises a two-element relay having the field f and the armature f arranged in series in a stick circuit which may be designated for convenience as 2' comprising the contact 25 controlled by the relay F, the conductor 26, conductor 27, the coil of an inductor element 7), conductor 28, condenser 29, conductor 30, relay element f, conductor 31, relay element f, conductor 82, and conductor 33. This circuit 2' is normally energized by a circuit, which for convenience may be designated as is, comprising the generator G, conductor 11, conductor 34, the coil of an inductor element a, conductor and conductors 18 and 19. The elements a and b are inductively related so that under normal conditions with the circuit 2' closed, the relay F is energized to maintain its contacts 14 and 25 closed.
The relay H also comprises a two-element relay having the field h and the armature 7L2 arranged in series in a circuit which may be designated as Z comprising a contact 36 which is open under normal conditions and which is closed when the relay H is energized in response to caution conditions, a conductor 37, a conductor 38, a condenser 39, a conductor 40, the coil of the third inductor element 0, the conductor 41, relay element 7L conductor 42, relay element h, and con ductor 43. The inductor 0 is also inductively related to the energizing inductor a, so that when the circuit Z is closed, the relay H will be energized from the energizing circuit is and the generator G. Condensers 29 and 39 are provided in the circuits 2' and Z respectively, for the purpose of making these cir cuits normally substantially resonant.
Cooperating with the inductor elements a, b and c of the vehicle carried inductor means A, there are provided corresponding inductor elements a, b and c forming part of the roadside inductor means B, the inductor elements a, b and 0 being arranged in spaced relation between the rails of the track corresponding to the spacing of the vehicle carried inductor elements a, Z) and 0, so that inthe movement of the vehicle and the vehicle carried mechanism in the direction as indicated by the arrow in Fig. 1, the vehicle inductor elements will move over so as to be influenced by and to influence the corresponding roadside inductor elements. More specifically, the roadside inductor elements a, b are arranged to cooperate with the vehicle carried inductor elements a and b to produce a controlling operation of the vehicle carried relay F, and to this end the inductor elements a, b are arranged in series in a circuit which may be designated as 0?. including the coil of the inductor element a, the conductor 44, ghe coil of the inductor element 7), conductor 45, the coil of another roadside inductor d the function of which will be made clear hereinafter, conductor 46, a contact 47 closed under clear track concarried cir ditions and controlled by a distant roadside relay D, conductor 48, contact 49 closed under clear track conditions and controlled by a home or track relay T, conductor 50, condenser 51, and conductor 52, the condenser being provided in this circuit to correct the impedance fact-or thereof. Also the roadside inductor elements a and c are arranged for cooperation with the vehicle carried inductor elements a and 0 respectively to produce a controlling operation of the ve hicle carried relay H, and to this end these roadside inductor elements are arranged in a circuit generally designated as 92 comprising the coil of the element a, the conductor 53, the coil of the inductor element 0, conductor 5%, the coil of another roadside element 6 the function of which will be made clear hereinafter, conductor 55, a back contact 56 normally open and closed when the relay D is deenergized, conductor 48, contact 49, conductor 50, condenser 51, and conductor 52. With this described construction it will be clear that when the home and distant relays T and D are both energized, as under clear track conditions, the-inductor circuit on will be closed; that when the distant relay D is deenergized. as under caution track conditions, the inductor circuit on will be opened and the inductor circuit a closed; and that when the home relay T is deenergized, this being in response to danger track conditions, the opening of the contacti) will open both of the inductor circuits m and n.
The operation of the system thus far described is as follows: When the train running without restriction between control stations, the energizing inductor (4 functions in the nature of the primary of a transformer, the secondary of which is the inductor Z) which is energized for operating the relay F to maintain the train control circuit 7: normally closed. When the train reaches a control station the vehicle carried inductor ele ments and b more over the roadside inductor elements a, b, and when the conditions ahead are clear, the vehicle inductors a, b ar unintluenced due to the fact that the roadside inductor circuit m is closed, the vehicle in-nrctor elements being influenced, however, to produce a controlling condition in the relav when the inductor circuit at is opened due iinier to caution or danger roadside conditions. With the circuit at open, the inductor elements a and 0 modify the reluctance of the magnetic circuits of he vehiclecarricd incuctors a and 5, the change in the relucta of the in V it circuit Z) having the etl ect of changing th impedance of thctrain t '2', ,h the resu tin effective deenergization of t 1e control re y F. With the circuit at closed, however, in response to clear roadside conditions, the reluctance of the magnetic circuits is not substantially va- 1" ind theimpedance oft-he circuit 2' is maintained so thatthe relay F is uninfiuenced. Thus under danger conditions'the relay F is deenergizechopening the control circuit h at the contact 14 to bring the vehicle to a halt, and opening the stick circuit tomaintain the relay F-deenergized after the trainpa. cs beyond tie control station. Similarly when the train .is running under caution (0 d "one between control stations and the v le carried circuit Z is closed for energizing therelay Has will appear farther hereinafter, the vehicle-carried inductor elements a ture of a trans ormer, the element a acting as the pri: -ary or energizing inductor, and the element 0 as the secondary or receiving inductor for energizing the circuit Z and in itaining the same energized. When a train running under caution conditions reaches a caution station, the circuit at is closed and the movement of the vehicle carriedinductors (a, 0 over the roadside inductors a, 0 produces no controlling effect on. the circuit Z. 1;, however, a train running under caution conditions reaches a danger control station, the vehicle inductor elements-c and 0 are influenced by the inductor elements a, 01- in the open circuit a to change the impedance of the train carried circuit Z for producing an effective deenergization of the relay H, the deenergization of this relay causi t-h o eni-ng of the-contrrlc-ircuit ll attne co ct23-to bring theveh-icleto a halt and causing the opening of the stick circi Z which remains open after the train has moved beyond the control station. it will thus be seen that with the provision of the system described, a'train running-under clear station uninfluenced and a train runningunder caution conditions will pass a'caution station nninfiuenced, a controlling operation of the train being, however, obtained when a train running under clear conditions reaches a caution or danger station and when a train running under caution conditions reaches a danger station, the controlling eflect consisting in a tripping of the train mechanism, this controlling eiiect persisting after the train has moved beyond the controlling point.
After a controlling or tripping opera- For resetting the relay F, I preferably provide a reset partial circuit including the con ductor 57 and a contact 58' arranged in paralconditions will pass a clear lel with the contact 25, the contact 58 being controlled by an indication receiver F which may be of the two-element type having a field f always energized from the vehicle carried generator G and connected thereto by means of the conductors 59 and 60 connected to the lines 19 and 11 respectively, and an armature f included in a circuit which may be designated as 0 comprising the armature f conductor 61, coil of a vehicle carried inductor (Z and conductor 62., the said inductor (Z being arranged to move over the roadside inductor element (Z' heretofore mentioned. F or resetting the relay H, 1 preferably provide a resetting partial circuit comprising a conductor 63, conductor G l, contact 65, conductor 66 and conductor 67, this partial circuit being arranged in parallel With the stick contact 86 of the relay H, the contact being controlled by an indication receiver H which may also be of the two-element type having the field h energized from the generator G and connected thereto by means of the conductors 68 and 69, and the armature h arranged in a circuit which may be designated as 29 comprising the armature h conductor 7 O, coil of a vehicle carried inductor element 0 and conductor 71, the inductor element a being arranged to move over the roadside inductor element 6 heretofore men tioned.
The operation of the resetting means is substantially as follows: After the vehicle carried relay F has been tripped in response to either danger or caution roadside conditions, the said relay F is reset when the vehicle passes a station indicating clear conditions ahead by the closing of the contact 58 which efiects the closing of the vehicle circuit 2'. Under such clear track conditions the roadside inductor circuit m is closed and when the vehicle inductor means moves over the roadside inductor means, the vehicle inductor a energizes the roadside inductor a, inductor element a acting now in the nature of an impulse receiving inductor, the impulse being transmitted to the roadside inductor element d which in turn transmits the same to the vehicle receiving inductor (Z. The impulse received by the vehicle receiving inductor (Z is sufllcient to energize the relay element F for operating the relay F to close the contact 58 of the reset circuit. It will be noted that the closing of the roadside inductor circuit m obviates any change taking place in the resonant vehicle circuit 2', so that the closing of the contact 58 of the reset partial circuit effects the energization of the relay F by the cooperation of inductor'elements a, Z) for the closing of the contacts of this relay. Although the cooperation of the reset inductors (Z and (Z is but momentary, it will be noted that the energizing of the relay F closes the contact 25, thereby closing the stick or holding circuit for the said relay F.
When a train reaches a station indicating caution, the relay H is reset by the closing of the contact 65, the closing. of this contact eflecting the closing of the vehicle carried circuit Z. Under such caution conditions the roadside inductor circuit 92 is closed as hereinbefore pointed out, and when the vehicle inductor elements move over the road side inductor elemen s, the vehicle induct-or element (a energizes the roadside inductor element (4, the latter acting in the nature of an impulse receiving inductor, the received impulse energizing the transmitting inductor e for producing an impulse which in turn is transmitted to the vehicle receiving inductor e, the said transmitted impulse being Sullicient for energizing the relay element 7& of the relay H, the energization of this relay effecting the closing of the reset circuit contact 65. It will a ain here be noted that due to the closing of too roadsideinductor circuit n the resonance of the vehicle carried circuit Z is not disturbed under the conditions described, and that therefore the vehicle carried element 0 receives sufficient energy from the energizing element a to operate the relay H when the contact 65 is closed. It will be also noted that even though the cooperation between the resetting inductors e and e is but momentary, the relay H remains energizet when the vehicle passes the control point due to the closing of the stick contact 36 of the circuit Z when the relay H is energized.
Under danger track conditions due to the deenergization of both the roadside inductor circuits m and 91, both relays F and H are deenergized and the valve V is operated to bring the vehicle to a halt. For the purpose of permitting the train to proceed after thus being brought to a halt, there may be provided a manually reset circuit which includes the conductor 78, the switch 74 and the conductor 75 arranged in parallel with the reset contact 65, the closing of the switch 74 effecting the closing of the vehicle carried circuit Z, this to permit the train to proceed under restriction to the next control station.
Although in the embodiment illustrated in the drawings and hereinbefore described, the vehicle carried and roadside inductor means are designed to cooperate for producing clear, caution and danger indications on the train, it will be understood that the principles of my invention may be employed for producing any number oftrain indications. For example, the inductive system may consist merely in the combination of inductors for producing proceed and stop effects on the train mechanism. With such a construction the inductors a, b and (Z cooperating with the inductors a, b and (Z would be employed, the roadside inductors functioning for influencing the vehicle inductors to produce a controlling condition and for being influenced by the vehicle inductors for producing a modification of the controlling condition, a single inductor circuit on the roadside being thus employed for producing the trip sing effect and the resetting efiect.
Referri g now to F 2 of the drawings, 1 show meas ar plifying the current iny received by the rehicle carried in ductors (Z and c,'the said means comprising generators designated'generally as G and G generator G being inserted in the circuit p and generator G in the circuit '0. Each generator may be oi one induction motor type, the generator G having the rotor 77 and the field 78, and generator G having the rotor and the field 78. In each generator the l rotor is driven by a motor (not shown) which may for example be a turbine. With the train control system in operation, the rotors of these generators are continuously operated, and whenever-the inductors (Z and 6 become energized bytheir corresponding track inductors, energy is induced in the windings or stators of the generators, with the result t at in effect the amplification takes place for the moment, considerably increas-' ing the amount of energy through the armatures f and li of the indication receivers F and H.
Referring now to Fig, 3 of the drawings, I show amodification of the amplifying means employed in the inductor circuits g9 and 0, each inductor circuit being provided with a generator which maybe of the direct current type, the circuit 10 being provided with. the generatorGr and the circuit 0 being provided with the generator G It will be noted that the circuit including the inductor 6 includes theconductor Y9, condenser 80, winding 81 of the field pole 82, conductor 83, winding 84: of the field pole 85, and con' ductor 86. The armature 7&4 of the indication receiver H includes in its circuit conductor 87, condenser 88, conductor 89, winding 90 on the field pole 82, conductor 91, armature 92, conductor 93, winding 94 on the field pole S5, and conductor95; It will be noted fromthis construction that the armature of the indication receiver cooperates with its inductor, but that the circuits connectingthe two are separated. The genera tor G comprises similar parts designated by primed reference characters. The condensers in the inductor parts of the circuits as well as inthe-armature parts of the-circuits are provided for correction of power factor of the circuits, these condensers being preferably adjusted so as to place the circuits in the proper state oi impedance. hen the inductors (Z- and e or either of them come into correspondence with their respective cooperating track inductors, as for example when the inductor 6 comes into correspondence with the track inductor e, energy is induced in the inductor 6', this in turn energizing the field" of the generator G momentarily, and
since the generatorG is operating as a generator, flux is set up in the field of the generator and a current is produced in the circuit 39 of the armature 92, with the result that the energy which was originally induced in the inductor e is magnified in its eiiect on the circuit 39.
The operation of my train control system as whole is substantially as follows: When the train is running without restriction, the vehicle carried relay F is in an energized state and the vehicle carried relay H is in a deenergized state with the valve magnet 1O energized to permit the train to proceed without limitation. When the train running without restriction reaches a control station indicating clear, the vehicle carried inductor means h is uninfiuenced by the roadside inductor means B and the relay F remains in an energized state. When such a train running without restriction reaches a control station indicating caution, the train carried inductor means A cooperates with the roadside inductor means B to produce a deenergizing of the vehicle carried relay F and an energizing of the vehicle carried relay lithe valve magnet 10 being thereby placed under the control of the speed con troller 21 to permit the train to proceed under a speed restriction, the speed control circuit comprising the generator G, conductors 19, 18 and 17 electromagnet l0, conductors 16 and 24, a contact 23, conductor 22, speed controller 21, and conductors 20, 12 and 11. When, however, a. train running without re striction reaches a station indicating dan ger, the vehicle carried inductor means A cooperates with the roadside inductor means B to deenergize the relay F, and since the relay H is in a deenergized state, the train control circuit 71 will be opened to deenergize the electromagnet 10 for bringing the vehicle to a halt, after which the switch 74 may be operated to permi the train to proceed to the next control station under a speed restriction. When atrain is running under caution conditions, the vehicle carried relay Fis in a deenergized state and the vehicle carried relay H is in an energized state. l/Vhen the train which is running under such a caution restriction reaches a control station indicating caution, the roadside inductor means B has no influence on thevehicle carried inductor means A, and the relay H remains energized .to maintain the speed restrictivecontrolof the train. When, however,=a train running under a speed restriction reaches a station indicating danger, the vehicle carried inductor means A cooperates with the roadside inductor means B to trip or deenergize the relay H, and since the relay F is in a de'energized state, the control circuit 'w'illbe opened to deenerg-ize the magnet 10 to bring the vehicle to a halt, after which the switch 74 must be operated to pen mit the train to proceed under restriction to the next control station.
While I have shown my invention in the preferred form, it will be obvious that many changes and modifications may be made in the structure disclosed without departing from the spirit of the invention, defined in the following claims.
