Description

March 31, 1931. E. M. BROWN 0 I GARETTE HOLDER Filed Nov, 24, 1928 avwcntoa Jib LE1 r1: 11.
Patented Mar. 31, 1931 UNITED STATES EDWIN M. BRO'WN, OF JACKSON, MICHIGAN CIGARETTE HOLDER Application filed November 24, 1928. Serial No. 321,739.
This invention provides a combined holder and dispenser for articles of the nature of cigarettes whereby the article is protected and enclosed and adapted to be delivered, as
required, one at a time.
The invention contemplates an article including acontainer, an article deliverer slidably mounted in the container, and means admitting of convenient operation of the deliverer when it is required to obtain a cigarette or other article to be dispensed.
While the drawing illustrates a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that in adapting the means to meet specific needs and requirements, the design may be varied and such other changes in the minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the invention as claimed, without departing from the spirit thereof.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof, reference is to be had Y to the following description and the drawing hereto attached, in which Figure l is a perspective view of a combined holder and dispenser embodying the in vention.
Figure 2 is a vertical, central, transverse sectional View of the device, the dotted lines showing the article deliverer projected.
Figure 3 is a view of the device as seen from the rear, the back of the container being removed.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in the several views of the drawing by like reference characters.
The container comprises a bottom 1, end walls 2, a front 3 and a back 4. The bottom 1 extends beyond the enclosing walls and constitutes a base. The end walls 2 are fixed and their upper ends are rabbeted to receive a cover 5 which obtains a snug fit between the front 3 and the back 4. The cover 5 may be finished in any determinate way ac- The forward edge of the stop 7 is curved forwardly and downwardly to admit of ready delivery of the cigarette or other article to be dispensed. Y
The deliverer consists of a plate 8 which is slidably mounted in grooves 9 formed in the inner faces of the end walls 2. The forward portion of the plate 8 projects through the opening 6 and beyond the front 3 and has an opening 10 formed thereinto receive the lowa er end of a lever 11. An opening 12 is formed in'the plate 8 adjacent the front 3 and is adapted to receive the cigarette 'or other article to be dispensed.
When the deliverer 8 is in normal position, IIii as indicated in Figure 2 of the drawing, the opening 12 thereof is directly above the stop 7 so that the cigarette or other article in position for delivery is supported upon the stop 7 in position for delivery when the part 8 is moved forwardly. A stud 13 connects the lever 11 with the upper portion of the front 3. An open coil spring 14: mounted upon the inner end of the stud 13 is confined between the front 3 and the rear upset portion of the stud and normally exerts a pressure to hold the lever 11 close against the front 3 and the plate Sin normal withdrawn position. The
upper end of the'lever 11 projects some distance above the top of the front 3 and when pressed upon throws the plate 8 forwardly and tensions the spring 14. The top edge of the front 3 acts as a fulcrum for the lever 11 when'its upper end. is pressed rearwardly to move the stud 13 and the deliverer 8 fors5 wardly. V
A strip 15 is attached to the top side of the plate 8 in the rear of the opening 12 and its top side inclines upwardly and rearwardly to direct the cigarette or other article placed within the container towards the opening 12. Obviouslythe upwardly and rearwardly inclined portion of the deliverer may be provided in any way to form ineffect a part of the deliverer. A check 16 is located above the a; rear portion of the deliverer and its top side 7 curves forwardly and downwardly to direct the articles from the rear of the container towards the front thereby insuring positive dispensation upon operating the lever 11 between the lever and container, and a spring I stop, and having the upper portion in the rear The check 16 is adjacent the back i and tween lever and container, and an open coil prevents any of the articles lodging in the spring mounted upon the stud and normally rear of the deliverer when the same is proexerting a rearward pressure thereon.
jected forwardly.
The size of the delivery openings 12 and 6 will depend upon the form of the article to be dispensed. Upon removing the cover 5 the container is suppliedwith the articles to be stowed therein for dispensation, and when the cover 5 is replaced the articles are completely enclosed and protected, thereby p-re venting loss of flavor and moisture of the article which would tend to lose its aroma and moisture, as would be thecase with cigarettes and cigars. One of the articles will lodge in the vopening 12 and rest upon the stop 7. Upon pressing theupper end of the lever 11 rearwardly the deliverer is moved forwardly and the tension of the spring 1 L is increased by a corresponding forward movement of the stud 13. As the part 8 reaches the limit of its forward movement the article contained in the opening 12 automatically discharges, and upon releasing the pressure on the lever 11 the deliverer is returned to normal position by the action of the spring 14:, and the device is reset for another delivery upon operating the lever 11 in the manner stated.
Having thus described the invention, I claim 1. A combined holder and dispenser comprising a container formed with a discharge opening, a deliverer therein, a leverin engagement with the deliverer, a longitudinally movable stud forming connecting means exerting a longitudinal pressure on the stud to normally hold the lever and dehverer 1n predetermined posltlon.
2. A combined holder and dispenser comprising a container having a discharge opening 111 a side thereof, a deliverer slidably mounted 1n the container and operable r through the discharge opening, a lever engaging the deliverer, a stud forming connecting means between the lever and container and movable longitudinally, and an open coil spring mounted upon the stud and adapted to hold the parts in predetermined position.
3. A combined holder and dispenser comprising a container having a discharge opening, a stop within the container adjacent the discharge opening and having its top side deflected forwardly and downwardly, a deliverer slidably mounted within the container and having an opening directly above the of said opening inclined forwardly and downwardly from the rear, a lever placed against the front of the container and engaging the projecting portion of the deliverer and extending above the top of the container, a stud forming cennecting means bei In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
