IMPROVEMENT IN IVIECHANICS COMBINATION IMPLEMENTS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 179,853, dated July 18, 1876; application filed May 1,1876.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DANIEL GooDNow, J r., of Boston, Suffolk county, Massachusetts, have invented a Mechanics Combination Implement, of which the following is a specification This invention consistsin grouping together, in a compact and convenient form, several tools or implements which have heretofore been used independently of each other, the object of my invention being to enable ready access to be had to any or all of them, and by assembling them in one common support obviate the liability of their becoming lost or niislai'd.

The drawing accompanying this specification represents an isometricelevation of an implement containing my invention.

In such drawing, Arepresents a rectangular block, which will serve the purpose of an anvil or small bench, and whose upper surface is to beplaned to a flat face.

At one corner of the block A, and rising somewhat above the same, I erect a post, B, upon the top of which I place a soft-metal block, 0, to constitute apunch-seat for punching sheet metal, and for kindred uses. This block 0 may be formed with a shank to enter ,a recess in the top of the post B, by which means it may be removed, and another object applied in its place.

D in the drawing represents a horn projecting laterally from the upper part of the-post B, such horn being adapted to the uses approximating those to which the horn of an ordinary blacksmiths anvil is put, though on a smaller scale.

E in the accompanying drawing represents a column disposed within the angle or corner at the point of junction of the block A and post B, the top of this column being, by preference, about on a level with that of said block A, and formed with a pocket sunken in its upper surface to receivea chisel-cutter, G, Whose stem His inserted in the pocket. The cutter Gr may be replaced by other instruments, which are adapted to the socket; but, as a rule, such cutter will remain a fixture of the implement, since it is an instrument in universal use among machinists or amateurs.

The block A, post B, and column E are to be cast in one homogeneous mass of cast-iron, to insure strength and cheapness.

The extreme compactness and portability and universality of use of my present implement will commend it to a large class of persons, to whom it Will be a valuable adjunct of a workshop.

1 claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent 0f the United States, the following:

The improved implement described, consisting of the block A, post, B, a detachable softmetal block or seat, 0, having a shank on its under face which fits in a recess in the top of the post B, the column E to receive a detachable chisel-cutter, G, the stem H of which fits in the-pocket made in the top of the column E, and the horn D projecting laterally from the upper part of the post B, the said post, block, and column formed of one piece of metal, or other suitable material, substantially as and for the purpose described.
