IMPROVEMENT lN COMPRESSION-VALVES AND CYLINDER-COCKS FOR STEAMENG|NES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 179,845. dated J u'ly 18, 1876; application filed February 2, 1876.
To all whom ct may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK DOUGLAS, of Chicago, in ,the county of Cook, State of lllinois, have invented certain Improvements in Combined COIXlPIGSSlOlLVEtlVG and Cylinder- Oocks for Steam-Engines, of which thefollowing is a specification:
The first part of my invention relates to the self-actin g or automatically-moving cup-valve, which closes instantly when the live steam enters the cylinder, and opens by the action of a spring as soon as the pressure is relieved by the exhaust-valve, thereby creating a supplementary exhaust for the escape of water and back steam.
The second part of my invention relates to the rolling valve or plug-cock with eccentric shape center, and so placed under the stem of the cup-valve as to raise said valve from its seat, when desired, by rotating the cock in one direction to a stop, and when rotated to the stop in the other direction the opening is entirely closed.
The lever of the cock is placed half-way between the stops when the engineer wishes the valve to work by the action of the direct and exhaust steam.
The object of my invention is to combine a self-acting compression-valve with a cylinder-cock in such a manner as to be under control of the engineer to open or close at will, or set to operate automatically by the action of steam.
Figure 1 is a vertical view of outside of a whole valve. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the whole valve. Fig. 3 is a crosssection through cock L.
Ais the outside case of upper portion of valve; B, the lower portion of the valve or case; 0 O, the cup-valve, provided with lugs d d d d at the top. 0 e are guides for the upper portion of valve 0 O, and are parts of frame A. Ring-guide ffis a portion of base B, and forms a circular guide for lower part of valve 0 C.
The openings 9 g through ring-guide ff are for the escape of water when valve 0 O is raised from its seat. Stem H of valve 0 0 forms another guide for the valve where it passes through part I of case B. The spiral spring K raises valve 0 C from its seat when relieved of direct steam-pressure. The plugcock L is fitted in case B, and has an opening or eccentric depression on one side of its center, to correspond to opening m.
Lever O hasa stop, 'P, on it, and, when turned in contact with stop 1, the opening m is closed, thereby making a perfectly-tight cylinder-cock.
When lever O is turned the other way against stop 2, the eccentric portion of plugcock L comes in contact with stem H, and holds valve 0 G from its seat, thereby allowing steam to blow through freely and out at opening m.
When lever O hangs straight down, as in Fig. 1, the cup-valve O O is free to close and open at each induction and exhaust of steam -in the cylinder.
The lever 0 may be operated by the engineer of a locomotive the same as the ordinary cylinder-cock.
The operation is as follows: \Vhen a locomotive-engineer wishes to heat up the cylin ders before starting the engine, lever O is moved so as to bring stop P in contact with stop 2,which raises valve 0 from its seat, and holds it there while direct steam is blown through, and, when heated and ready to start, the lever() is moved back to center, as shown in drawing, leaving valve 0 (3 free to close by the action of the first jet of live steam that enters the cylinder, and it remains closed until the stroke of piston is made, and the exhaust-valve opens, which relieves the pressure above, when the upward pressure of spring K lifts valve 0 G. from its seat, and allows the escape of water and back steam to pass between the lugs d d d d of valve 0 O and opening 9 g of guide ff, and openings at and B, thereby effectually preventing the escape of live steam, and allowing the water and back steam to escape at every stroke.
Should the engineer wish to stop its action,
and the escape of steam or water, he can do 7 2. The valve 0 G, provided with a stem, H, so by moving lever O in cont-act with stop 1, in combination with the eccentric depression and thereby close opening m. of plug valve L, spring K, and opening m,
What I claim, and desire to secure by Leti substantially as and for the purpose herein ters Patent, is specified.
1. The cup-valve O O, in combination with FRANK DOUGLAS.
spring K around valve stem H, the guide I, Witnesses:
and seat B B, substantially as and for the THOMAS C. OONNOLLY,
purpose specified. ULYssEsG. WHITE.
