Description

Marghfsl, 1931. w, J WOLF 1,798,443
FIRE KTNDLER Filed Oct. 25, 1928 Patented Mar. 31, 1931 UNITED STATES WILLIAM J. WOLF, OF WATER/L00, IOWA FIRE KINDLER Application filed October 25, 1928.
means which are hereinafter described and claimed, and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a side elevation of my improved fire kindler set up with its combustible carrying arm in a vertically adjusted position, and Fig. 2 is I, a top plan of the device of said Fig. 1.
My fire kindling device includes a cast metal base element 1, which is enlarged at one end at 3 to provide a counterweight for the combustible carrying arm 9 and its load which projectsin an opposite direction from the fixed standard 5 on the other end part of the base 1. Preferably the base element 1 is constructed with the divergent base members 2 which thus furnish stabilizing means for the standard 5 tending to prevent side tip thereof. The standard 5 is a cylindrical rod whose threaded lower end is seated in an interiorly threaded hole in a boss 4 on the forward part of the base element 1 between the divergent feet 2.
The numeral 6 denotes a plate, one end 66 of which may be doubled over upon itself and the contacting parts apertured at 7, with a. hole large enough to mount the plate loosely upon the standard 5 slidably. The plate projects forwardly and is terminally bent upwardly, the plate being forked at its upturned extremity at 6 and in its adjacent 40 body part apertured at 6a to seat and fasten therein the angularly bent end parts of an arm 9, and the latter may be of any construction, but may be as illustrated, where it is shown as three stout wire rods twisted to- 5 gether, bent up at 8, the forward parts of Serial No. 315,061.
these rods 10 being then spread apart to provide a trident whose tines are parallel and horizontal.
Cylinders '11 of any suitable porous material, such as asbestos, may be mounted around said tines and held in place by means of encompassing longitudinal and ringed wires 12, and an end bar 13, with nuts 14.
Then the plate 6 is initially mounted upon the standard 5, the plate being held horizontal, it may be easily slid up or down along the standard without binding, but when the plate 6 is released at a desired altitude of adjustment upon the standard, so as to position it beneath a grate or the like for the ignition of fuel on the grate, the released plate 6 under the influence of gravity tilts downwardly forwardly, so that the opposite forward and rear walls of the aperture 7 cant and bind at their angles upon the said stand ard, and thus the plate by its own weight plus that of the arm 9 with its trident and the fuel carriers 11 is securely held in the adjusted position. The plate 6 may be re leased by tilting it back, to be moved vertically along the standard or removed therefrom.
The plate 6 may when engaged therewith be rocked sidewise upon the standard to a desired changed angular position horizontally. The asbestos fuel carriers 11 may be saturated with any desired liquid combustible, but alcohol is recommended, because it produces a smokeless flame.
Having described my invention, what 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A fire kindler for employment in the manner described, comprising a plurality of parallel permeable non-combustible elongated bodies of friable nature, reticulated housings therefor, central cores therefor having endtie connections, one of said connections having a rigid substantially horizontal stem having a downturned terminal, a case member counterweighted at one end to counterbalance said kindler bodies, and having a rod standard, a plate having one end upturned and notched to seat said stem, and apertured to seat the downturned termination of the stern releasably, said plate having another aperture to seat it loosely on said rod standard for vertical adjustments thereon, the Weight 01": the kindler bodies canting the plate to bite the standard to hold it in an adjusted position thereon.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
WILLIAM J. WOLF.
