AUXUJARY LINER Filed March 5, 1930 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Patented Mar. 31, 1931 UNITED STATESI PATENT OFFICE FRANK E. CROTTO, DECEASED, LATE OF TULSA, OKLAHOMA, BY INEZ CROTTO, AD-
MINISTRATRIX, OF TULSA, OKLAHOMA, ASSIGNOR TO WESTERN SUPPLY COMPANY, OF TULSA, OKLAHOMA, A CORPORATION OF OKLAHOMA AUXILIARY LINER Application filed March 3,
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in liners for wire line clamps.
The invention has particularly to do with a liner for use with a wire line clamp of the type shown in the Letters Patent No. 1,728,173, issued September 17 1929, but may be applied to any clamp suitable for the purpose.
One object of the invention is to provide an auxiliary liner arranged to be fitted into the regular liner of the clamp to take a smaller size of line when necessary.
Another object of the invention is to provide an auxiliary liner in the form of an attachment which may be readily applied and as easily removed without disconnecting, disassembling, or in any way disturbing the parts of the clamp.
A construction designed to carry out the invention will be hereinafter described, to-A gether with other features of the invention.
The invention will be more readily understood from a reading of the following speciflcation and by reference to the accompanying drawings in which an example of the invention is shown, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a wire line clamp equipped with an auxiliary liner constructed in accordance with the invention,
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the auxiliary liner,
Figure 3 is a partial vertical sectional view of the clamp and liner, and
Figure 4 is an enlarged transverse sectional view showing the clamp liner and the auxiliary liner gripping an undersized line.
ln the drawings the numeral 10 designates a yoke shaied body including an outwardly directed arm 11. At the center of the body is formed a concaved vertical liner boss 12. A jaw or arm 13 is suitably hinged to the body and is actuated by a lever 14. The jaw also has a vertical concaved liner boss 15 opposite the boss 12.
The boss 12 has a liner 16 fastened therein by set screws 17 while Vthe boss 15 has a complementary liner 18 fastened therein by set screws 19. Each liner is formed by a cylindrical bar provided with diametrically opposite longitudinal concaved grooves 21.
1930. serial no. 432,935.
Vhen one groove becomes worn the liner may be reversed and the other groove used.
Upon swinging the lever 14 toward the arm 11 the liner 1S will receive the cable or line in its groove 21 and ordinarily seats that cable in the groove 21 of the liner 16. Often it is desired to clamp a smaller cable or line, such as a sand line on a derrick and the grooves 21 would not conform to the small diameter of the sand line and, therefore7 would not clamp the same.
In such instances an auxiliary liner 22 is employed. This liner has a hook 23 at its upper end provided with a down-turned bill or stub 24. In the face of the liner is provided a vertical concaved groove 25 formed on such a curvature as to coact with the groove 21 of the liner 18 to grip a smaller line. The boss 12 is provided with a socket 26 in its top so that the liner 22 may be fitted in the groove 21 of the liner 16 and the bill 24 engaged in the socket 26, whereby the auxiliary liner is held in place. It will be seen that the liner will properly grip the cable and may be easily and quickly applied or removed.
The lever 14 is connected with an operating lever 27 by a gate 28, whereby the clamp is operated. It is not considered necessary to go into the details of the operation of the clamp. It is pointed out that the auxiliary liner 22 may be applied to any concaved liner and the hook or some other fastening means provided for temporarily securing the auxiliary liner in place. It is important that the liner be fitted without disturbing the other parts of the clamp, making adjustments or alterations.
Various changes in the size and shape of the dierent parts, as well as modifications and alterations, may be made within the scope of the appended claims.
Vhat is claimed, is:
1. The combination with co-acting line gripping liners, of an auxiliary liner removably attached to one of said liners and having a groove for receiving a line of less diameter than said liners.
2. The combination with co-acting line gripping liners having opposed vertical line grooves, of an auxiliary liner removably litting in the groove of one of the liners and having a vertical groove for receiving a line of less diameter than the grooves of said liners and cio-acting with the groove of the other liner.
3. The combination Wit-l1 a Wire line clamp having co-acting line gripping liners provided with vertical line grooves, of an auxiliary liner engaging in the groove of one of the liners and having a hook, at its upper end engaging in the clamp for removably securing it in place, said auxiliar57 liner having a vertical groove for receiving a line of smaller diameter than the clamp liners.
